MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. — Police and prison guards aided by search dogs hunted Sunday for two convicted killers and a third man who escaped the maximum-security Indiana State Prison, apparently through underground tunnels and pipes.

All three men were considered dangerous, and prison officials used a telephone notification system to send alerts to nearby residents and others. It was not known if any of the men had weapons.

Authorities identified the men as Charles Smith, 48, and Mark Booher, 46, both of New Castle, and Lance Battreal, 45, of Rockport. Smith and Booher were convicted of murder in the 1990s. Battreal was serving time for rape. All three faced at least 30 more years behind bars.

Indiana State Police, federal marshals and local police and sheriff's deputies joined prison guards in searching for the three.

But authorities did not know where the men might be headed, Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison said. Investigators were poring over visitor logs and talking to the men's relatives in hopes of finding leads, Garrison said.

The men were discovered missing from their housing units around 10 a.m. Sunday, Garrison said. The prison said in a news release that it appeared they escaped by getting past the bars in the tunnels and pipe chases under the prison grounds. Garrison said it looked as if bars were removed.

The prison sits in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Michigan City, about 30 miles west of South Bend and not far from Lake Michigan and the Michigan state line.

Smith was sentenced in 1999 to 95 years for murder and had a projected release date in 2045. He has a tattoo of a scorpion on his right hand and a cross with dots on his left hand, the prison said.

Booher was sentenced in 1999 to 65 years for murder and 20 years for robbery. His projected release date was in 2041.

Battreal was sentenced in 1998 to 50 years for rape, 20 years for criminal confinement and three years for stalking. His projected release date was in 2047.

Additional details about their convictions were not immediately available from the Department of Correction.

Battreal and Smith may have both recently cut their hair or shaved it, the prison said.

New Castle and Rockport, the men's hometowns, are both more than 140 miles from the prison. New Castle is about 30 miles east of Indianapolis, and Rockport is about 30 miles east of Evansville.

BTW, there is only one completely Supermax jail, and there are a bunch that have Supermax parts, this prison did not have any Supermax parts. The Gitmo prisoners would be transfered to a Supermax area of a prison, which no one has ever escaped from.

Having lived in Indiana, Evansville and Indianapolis are about 2.5 hours apart. Indy would be in the middle of the state, about halfway between the northern and southern borders. Michigan City is on the northern border, Evansville is on the southern border. Indiana takes 6+ hours to drive north to south depending on which parts of the state you are starting and ending in. This article makes it seem as though New Castle and Rockport are close, they are not. Prob about 4 hours apart, with Rockport being closer to 300 miles from Michigan City, not 140.

i used to live up in northwest Indiana years ago, i was up there in 2006 for my 20 year class reunion in Michigan City... Blue Chip Casino and one of my old friend worked at this prison and always heard thats a bad place. later i heard the prison system was laying off a lot of gaurds, and the average age of the gaurds was over 45. and not really should not be called maximum security, over the years i heard many escapees from there and not always up to date system either. and oh one of the immate that was guity for rape, my mother was the juror on that case...how wicked is that!!

You have bad grammar and you're wrong, that's not where we want to put terrorists. That would be called a SUPERMAX prison, get that through your thick head.

The new Johnny Depp movie "Public Enemies" came out recently. It's a true story that shows Dillinger successfully breaking his fellow inmates out of Indiana State Prison and later escaping himself from another Indiana prison. Coincidence?????????????

Same area too. That happened in Crown Point, and Michigan City isn't too far away. I've lived in the area all my life unfortunately.

I do not understand why some system, some facility cannot keep someone from escaping! I think I could do it here at my own house if I absolutely have to. How do they not foresee glitches in something called maximum security.

LOL - clearly the "maximum" part of the security needs improvement ...

If it wasn't Governor's Bayh home state I would be concerned about conspiracy to keep Gitmo open. When we say close Gitmo, I hope it doesn't mean not use for other business related toour national interest. If we would have just said we don't torture and when these folks are removed (smile) we would not be using this place in this fashion we would have been OK. I think we got too specific on this one and allowed the press to paint us in a corner.

Our dear Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins is trying to scare Kansans with the prospect that Gitmo detainees might end up in Leavenworth.

Leavenworth, filled with some of the nation's most dangerous criminals.

She's another one who has nothing but obstructionism and fearmongering, and the people in this state are dumb enough to fall for it.

Kansas isn't exactly a braintrust. Never has been.

But hey, us big city folk sure are happy when their best and brightest go off to live with us. They sure are glad to leave, too.

"Kansas isn't exactly a braintrust"

Yeah, they elected Sebelius, didn't they?

Don't know what "big city" you're from, but given California's massive debt and New York's fiscal woes, I'd say liberals are hard pressed to knock red states right now...

I get robo calls from her all the time. And surveys that only offer multiple choice answers that support her feeble position. Her election is the result of redistricting that cut up the one area in Kansas that is always Blue.

I have called her office several times to complain about her voting based on party first thinking and spreading misinformation that does not do service to Kansas or the rest of the country. Hope others do as well.

Upon further consideration, it's stuff like this that makes housing prisoners at Gitmo seem like a good idea.

That is just the purpose, who doesn't think this was done with help for political reasons. Never before until now and how convenient for the conservatives, 'PARTY OF NO', to oppose everything Obama is doing to fix a huge problem.

Wow. Whodda thunk it? The GOP staged this breakout so people would rally around keeping Gitmo open.

What genius!

I'd have never thought of that, it being so far fetched and all.

Meh. It's a Red State prison. After eight years of watching conservatives run the country, I'm surprised anything even works in those states.

This sounds like an inside job, I doubt Gitmo boys could escape with their lack of proper english, If they could they wouldve escaped Gitmo! Give me a break not everything has to be political.

One might have said that a # of years back but that just isn't so anymore. Everything is political whether we like it or not. You can thank the repugs for that. They have dragged everyone into the slime that is their world. Things that should simply be human issues sudden have some kind of political lien.
