Bruno

LOS ANGELES — Gay Austrian fashion devotee Bruno has landed the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office, though it's uncertain how much staying power he has.

Sacha Baron Cohen's "Bruno" started big on opening day Friday but had a huge drop the rest of the weekend, with the Universal Pictures mock documentary finishing with $30.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The movie took in nearly half of its weekend total _ $14.4 million _ on Friday, then tumbled with just $8.8 million Saturday and an estimated $7.2 million Sunday.

Revenues for hit movies typically go up on Saturday, so the nosedive for "Bruno" could be a sign that it lacks the shelf life that made Baron Cohen's "Borat" a $100 million smash.

"It is unusual for a film to drop on Saturday. Normally, you expect the film at least to be even on Saturday or above compared to Friday, because Saturday is the biggest moviegoing day of the weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "It's going to be interesting to see how it does over the long run."

"Bruno," which features Baron Cohen as a wannabe going to extremes to achieve celebrity, finished ahead of 20th Century Fox's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which took second with $28.5 million. The "Ice Age" sequel raised its domestic total to $120.6 million.

Finishing third after two weekends in the No. 1 spot was Paramount's sci-fi blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" with $24.2 million, raising its domestic haul to $339.2 million. The sequel passed the $319 million total of 2007's "Transformers."

The weekend's other new wide release, 20th Century Fox's romantic comedy "I Love You, Beth Cooper" opened weakly with $5 million, finishing at No. 7. The movie centers on a high school valedictorian who uses his graduation speech to declare his love for a bombshell classmate (Hayden Panettiere).

"Bruno" outpaced the $26.5 million opening weekend for Baron Cohen's surprise 2006 hit "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan." "Borat" started with $9.2 million on opening day Friday then climbed to $10.1 million Saturday, a sign that fans were talking it up to friends.

That good word-of-mouth propelled "Borat" to a long run at theaters, the movie climbing to a $128.5 million domestic total.

"Borat" also scored its big opening weekend in far fewer theaters. "Bruno debuted in 2,756 cinemas, more than three times the number for "Borat."

Nikki Rocco, head of distribution at Universal, said comedies such as "Bruno" typically drop off over opening weekend this time of year, while "Borat" opened in November, when audiences are less fickle than summer crowds.

The studio will have to wait until next weekend for a sense of how well "Bruno" can hold up for the long haul.

"I don't know. That crystal ball just isn't on my desk this morning," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution for Universal. "Zany comedies tend to be like that, so I'm hoping that in the scheme of things, it just plays out the way zany comedies will play out."

Reviews on "Bruno" were not as strong as those for "Borat," which critics generally liked. There also had been questions about whether Baron Cohen's flamboyantly gay persona might prove off-putting to audiences.

"Bruno" did most of its business in cities on the East and West coasts, while revenues were "softer, much softer in middle America," Rocco said.

Even if revenues continue to plunge, "Bruno" is well on its way to turning a profit for Universal, which paid $42.5 million for rights to distribute it domestically and in eight other territories. "Bruno" took in $25 million in overseas markets so far, including $20 million in those Universal acquired, among them Great Britain, Australia and Germany.

Modi Wiczyk _ co-chief executive officer of Media Rights Capital, which financed "Bruno" _ said the movie exceeded the company's expectations. Wiczyk said he had anticipated "Bruno" would finish in the range of $25 million domestically for the weekend.

"We don't have talking robots or karate in our film," Wiczyk said. "For that increasingly small subset of films that don't have robots, we did terrific."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Bruno," $30.4 million.

2. "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," $28.5 million.

3. "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," $24.2 million.

4. "Public Enemies," $14.1 million.

5. "The Proposal," $10.5 million.

6. "The Hangover," $9.9 million.

7. "I Love You, Beth Cooper," $5 million.

8. "Up," $4.7 million.

9. "My Sister's Keeper," $4.2 million.

10. "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," $1.6 million.

For all the relentless promotion of Cohen's intelligence and critics quick to jump on the bandwagon of this 'brilliant satire' industry insiders know that Sunday-Monday figures were significantly lower: the audience seemed to know they'd been had and let their friends know :)

SBC chooses to make movies like "Borat" and "Bruno" for two reasons: to make people laugh and to p people off. Love him or hate him, but please know that whichever side of this fence you fall on, Cohen has achieved what he set out to do. The people on here who claim not to care or are sick of hearing about him are the biggest jokes of all for not getting the irony of taking the time to post a rant about something you allegedly "don't care about"...LOL - Mission Accomplished!!!

BTW, please don't bother pointing out that SBC is also out to make $, I think that is a given no matter what profession you're in.

"People really should learn how to laugh at themselves more, otherwise they could be missing out on the joke of the century..."

You could make a movie about corophagia and have people love or hate and discuss it too.
Just don't call it chocolate.

Although I haven't seen the movie, like most, I've been inundated with the promotion for it, endless clips trailers, stunts and interviews---none of which looked particularly funny to me.

And something made me queasy about it all and I just couldn't put my finger on why. I was listening to Thom Hartmann today and he nailed it for me. People say this is a satire made to poke fun at homophobics the way Borat poked fun at anti-Semites. But as Hartmann pointed out, Borat was an anti-semite, and made us laugh and feel good about it in much the same way we laughed at Archie Bunker. But Bruno is not a homophobic. He is in fact a compilation of all the most dismissive stereotypes of being gay---sex obsessed, shallow, swishy and silly.

So yeah, I guess if I were gay I wouldn't find this any funnier than old cartoons featuring subservient blacks happy to just have a good watermelon on hand. Heck of a way to make homophobics rethink their stance.

No, I don't think I'll see this movie

i saw it & was kind of disappointed. Bruno was my second favorite of the three characters on the original show, after Ali G; so i was super excited for this movie, but i found that the movie sacrificed a lot of what was funny about the character to go after the cheap laughs. i fall pretty squarely in their target demographic and i found that the nudity & sex scenes were definitely gratuitous, at times it verged on pornographic; i was surprised they managed to slip in with an R rating. the funniest parts of the film had nothing to do with the cheap gay sex jokes that dominated the movie yet added nothing to the story, i wouldn't be at all surprised to find that the film is getting some negative word of mouth. i'm a big fan of the original character, but found the film disappointing.

This might just be my imagination but with the deepening recession the film industry seems to be slowly abandoning the mainstream market for the hipsters and urban sophisticates who "get" the premise and humor of movies like "Bruno".

Fewer and fewer "regular" people have the disposable income to spend on movies nowadays.

His AliG show was funny and subversive. His waif appeal reminded me of Charlie Chaplin.
Borat was neither funny, nor satire.
I'm getting a lot of feedback from people who've seen Bruno. Most do NOT like it.

I saw it in Europe last weekend with my daughter and her family, the youngest 13, and think it was totally inappropriate that we were seeing it as "family entertainment," which it most definitely isn't. Some really raunchy gay sex and full frontal, not sure if the U.S. version would include all that. If so, it's definitely porn, if funny. But not as funny as his other characters. Cohen is gifted and extremely quick, maybe brilliant, but he doesn't bring much warmth to the Bruno character and therefore doesn't make him likeable, but rather someone to pity or even bristle at. It really is much more of a fluff piece than "Borat," and just more of the same road show, look-how-clever-I-am posturing, but this time without the innocence of the clueless Borat. A on-trick movie and not for the kiddies, IMHO. Maybe not grown-ups either. We'll see how the box office goes.

I think Cohen must be a genius. Firstly because of his guerrilla style of comedy/performance art and secondly because he pushes cultural boundaries and gets to the heart of subjects considered taboo. The only problem I have is whether he is making a point or simply exploiting people's fears and comfort zones.

HAHAHA! I saw Bruno and LOVED IT. What a bunch of uptight comments here on HuffPo! Makes me laugh even more. You uptight folks give us liberals a bad name, fulfilling the humorless stereotype.

Cohen rocks satire better than The Onion or The Simpsons' too-often ham-handed spoon-feeding of "subversion." Bruno was brilliant satire about the superficiality of celebrity, and those who crave it, as well as those who take it way too seriously, like, you know, angry HuffPo commentators! HA!

Waaaa! Bruno is a stereotype! Please, it's obvious he's over the top. If GLAAD is angry about perpetuating gay stereotypes, I suggest they launch a boycott the Bravo network!

Rock on Bruno! Du ist uber!

Amen to that. So many angry people here showing outrage. I thought Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was a lot more stereotyping of gay men than this character is.

It's really refreshing to have such an über-smart, super-clever, know-it-all-in-your face individuum like yourself here who has managed to stay so modest while bearing the weight of his huge, huge brain.

I can tell you why the box office tumbled the next day. Once people saw it Friday night (like myself), word spread that this should have been NC-17, if not X. Definitely not a rated R movie. Anyone under 17 should NOT see this movie

R: "Restricted, Under 17 Requires Accompanying Parent Or Adult Guardian."
In the opinion of the Rating Board, this film definitely contains some adult material. Parents are strongly urged to find out more about this film before they allow their children to accompany them. An R-rated film may include hard language, or tough violence, or nudity within sensual scenes, or drug abuse or other elements, or a combination of some of the above, so that parents are counseled, in advance, to take this advisory rating very seriously. Parents must find out more about an R-rated movie before they allow their teenagers to view it.
