Goldman Sachs

New York Times:

Most of Wall Street, and America, is still waiting for an economic recovery. Then there is Goldman Sachs.

Up and down Wall Street, analysts and traders are buzzing that Goldman, which only recently paid back its government bailout money, will report blowout profits from trading on Tuesday.

Then Goldman should have felt the consequences of their risk taking instead of us bailing them out.

Some posters have made noises about taking to the streets over this bailout thing, mostly when it was first announced, things have di_ed down a little now. For what's it's worth, there are only two scenarios in which I can imagine myself taking to the street..and there might be other posters here who feel the same. These are just hypotheticals.

First one: we find out, suppose, that it wasn't as b@d as they painted it out to be; that the whole world economy was NOT going to collapse; that we were li_ed to and deprived of our money for, simply put, the purpose of f@ttening the wallets of people whose wallets are already so f@t they can barely find a comfortable chair.

Second one: we find out that it was indeed as b@d as they said, that we were not li_ed to, that P@ulson was not fe@r-m0ngering (in order to get his own way), but that it getting that b@d was so utterly preventable that we are rendered speechless when we find out just HOW preventable it was. Speechless and physically si_ck as we shake our empty pi_ggy banks and remember what was there before...and where it is now.

Other than that, I would not take up t0rch and pitchf0rk, t@r and feathers, and the like.

What we should be demanding is new regulations and enforcement of current regulations to prevent future disasters.
Also, we need laws to limit corporate influence in the government.

What does being mad at GS do? You bring them down and someone else would take their place.
It is the system that needs reform.

I thought that these kinds of regulations were already in the making! Given what has happened, I don't see that anything could justify their NOT already being in the making, rough drafts at least. If they aren't, they better get going...before it happens again. It would be inexcuseable to have it happen again all because somebody forgot to get the thing in gear...the minute they find out the current bailout was needed.

You're right... but now we lack the necessary leverage. What reason does Congress have to work on new financial regulations now that the crisis has been avoided and there are many other things on their plates right now??? How much more "lobbying" funds does GS has now that it's making record profits again???

I have a question for Sonia Sotomayor – Now with the ruling of the eminent domain of the Supreme Court against the people based on – Money-greed – So called – Corporation development – Does - Sonia Sotomayor - see this ruling as a justification – For the - Removal Theft and genocide of the Native Americans? Now with such a view from the court – U.S Government – Has this not hindered the Native Americans from Justice under the U.S. Constitution? Therefore – These treaties being recognized by international Law – Should be reviewed under International Law? And any and All violations of these Treties be – settled under International Law? Least we forget – The constitution is a binding treaty with the American People – and the saying – I condem you not – go but do it no more.

I think it's good adey. It shows the bailout worked. GS has payed back the money.

I do wonder what might have happened without the bailout though.

Now lets see them enact some strict regulation on financial markets, otherwise it will just happen again as PATina suggested earlier.

Regulation needed to wait until we were out of the crisis, though, didn't it? Seems to me it would have gotten people morefreaked out and made it worse?

Sitting at the top of a pyramid scheme. Dependent on the fastest computers parked inside the NYSE, they prey on the troglidites that work for a living. Its as easy as pie. Peasants work, scrimp and save for thirty years, G-Sax and their brethren take it all in a microsecond. When their criminal ways go asunder, they have their men in the Treasury and Federal Reserve to make them whole again, at the expense of the the working class. Its a medieval economic system.

As I recall, most opponents of TARP were saying that bailouts wouldn't work, and that more and more would be needed to keep them alive.
Now I notice that some of the same people are complaining that it worked.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:56 AM on 07/13/2009

A $2 billion first quarter profit for GS would make most wonder if TARP was needed at all.

This is based on manipulation of the oil markets. It is time for the middle class to go on strike. If we all don't pay our credit cards for one month, they will get the message. We have the power, we just don't chose to use it...unlike Goldman Sachs. Stop whining and do something.

The middle class has American Idol and other soporifics to keep its eye off the ball. And a reasonably decent standard of living. Maybe 80% of us would describe ourselves as comfortable. Polls show most Americans are happy, satisfied.

And that is the genius of it all. Corporate America is not malevolent, and they do let a decent standard of living trickle down to us peons. We don't mind the top 1% running everything, soaking up all the wealth. We call it "the American dream."

We will never revolt. We are too fat and comfortable.
