New York Times:

Most of Wall Street, and America, is still waiting for an economic recovery. Then there is Goldman Sachs.

Up and down Wall Street, analysts and traders are buzzing that Goldman, which only recently paid back its government bailout money, will report blowout profits from trading on Tuesday.

Are you out of your mind? Do you really want to see more job losses? Do you guys really hate Wall Street that much?

I don't want to see any job losses. I'm happy to see some companies start to make money.

That is wrong. Those on wallstreet have families etc.. I would just like to see the rampant greed at the expense of the little guy reined in.

This is not about GS succeeding it is the pattern of deception and lies which they used to achieve this success.

Read last weeks rolling stone expose on GoldmanSachs

That story is poorly-sourced, lacking in factual backup, and rife with silly conspiracy theories.

Goldman Sachs is not the enemy.

Your statement:
"If AIG had been allowed to go under, it would have taken the entire world economy with it"

Then it logically follows that, since GS is part of the entire world economy, it would have gone down without the influx of taxpayer money.

Thus, GS is profitable today because of taxpayer money.

Yes, it's the enemy.

Any company that has to dip twice into taxpayer money to the tune of many billions - only to miraculously pay it back in a couple of months, posting record profits later - had to be viewed with suspicion. It begs for conspiracy theories.
Although Matt Taibbi does raise good points.

If my insurance company goes broke, I get stiffed. It has happened to me twice in my life already. When GS's insurance company goes broke, it gets tax money so it can pay the claim to GS.

If AIG had been allowed to go under, it would have taken the entire world economy with it---and the pain for average Americans would have been catastrophic.

As distasteful as many of us find the AIG rescue, the government had little choice in the matter.

The company is being broken up, and it won't survive as it was previously constituted.

You prove my point. The "profitable" company GS would have gone down for sure without the taxpayer AIG bailout. GS is only profitable because of the taxpayer money it has received.

Is the pain for average Americans any less now? Taxpayers are not affected by these bailouts?!! Corporate socialism is acceptable, as is the pain for average Americans.

Why? Why would it have taken the whole world (economy) with it? How do we know that it wasn't partlly fearmongering on the part of Paulson who enriched his friends (or is said to have) et al? I am not doubting your word, I am just curious.

One thing I know. Any entity that gets so big that its failure could, single-handedly, bring down the world economy, should have been stopped in its tracts ever before it got that big. By thinking persons!

I have seen tinatoledo31 post here a few times before. There is an interesting pattern. He seems to only be concerned about threads relating to Goldman Sachs, and he then us Ayn Rand justifications for their greed while speaking to those who differ with calculated rudeness. He has done this at different hours of the day too. My only conclusion is that tinatoledo31 does indeed work for Goldman Sachs.

We shouldn't reallyexpect a politician to take vast amounts of money in campaign donations from private companies and then turn around and do something that is going to hurt that company and others like it. Because if he does, that will be the last money from that company that that politician will ever see...and he needs it for his next campaign. Or for someone else's next campaign, someone in his own party, of course.

(Not only that, but it wouldn't be very nice. Ha!)

But finance campaigns some other way, and this problem s solved. We have this same problem in the UK: politicians, dependent upon private funding (to a large extent, anyway), are trapped...into not passing laws that will hurt people who have funded them or will fund them, and passing ones that will help them.

It's just the way it is.

No Offense, but this is a really c*rap*py main thread. Come on HP....go to something else. You have a wide array from which to choose, "LaToya thinks Michael was M*urdered" for example.

or how 'bout a Sotomayor thread since THIS IS her week of confirmation and I have many, many nasty things to say about Jeff Sessions

I guess I'll take the "comment pending approval" over a scrub any day of the week so long as they eventually put it up. As I mentioned earlier, scrubbing has reached epidemic proportions of late. And then when HP started doing the "comment pending approval" garbage on an Iranian thread (Nico) a couple weeks ago, that was all many people could take. That was like messing with a thread owned by the people, an issue in which many have invested their heart and souls

The country is divided into three distinct groups, those who cheerlead the economic recovery like it was a football game, those who take a more cautious-optimism approach, and those who cheerlead for failure--the traderous right making up the later class--fortunately they so small in number as to be completely disregarded.

When corporate socialism (i.e. billions in taxpayer money) helps prop up these success stories, with no changes in the fundamental structure that caused the situation, it is hard to celebrate. We should be in a state of panic about the next bubble to burst.
