LOS ANGELES — In his final days, Michael Jackson was robust and active. Or dangerously thin and frail. Begging for access to powerful prescription drugs. Or showing no signs of ever having used them.

It depends on who's talking.

A dizzying collection of puzzle pieces about Jackson's health and habits has come to light since his death on June 25. With as much as a month before a toxicology report determines the cause, more are sure to emerge.

Each is likely to fuel further speculation. None is sure to produce a satisfying conclusion.

Some who knew him even seem to contradict themselves.

Here's what's known so far:

___

_ During his final rehearsal at the Staples Center, Jackson was captured on video doing his signature moonwalk and dance spins. Randy Phillips, CEO of concert promoter AEG Live, told CNN he was "a healthy, vibrant human being."

Story continues below

_ Phillips later told ABC concert organizers feared that Jackson was losing weight and showing signs of wear and tear. He said he hired a staffer whose purpose was to remind Jackson to eat.

_ Dr. Arnold Klein, Jackson's dermatologist, who said he last saw Jackson less than a week before he died, told CNN's Larry King that the singer was in "very good physical condition," in "a very good mood," and "was very happy."

_ Klein also told CNN that he had given Jackson the painkiller Demerol but warned him about using the powerful sedative Diprivan. He also confirmed that Jackson was a former drug addict who went to rehab in England.

_ "The Incredible Hulk" star Lou Ferrigno, who was helping Jackson prepare for a planned series of London concerts, told The Associated Press that he never saw Jackson take drugs, act aloof or speedy, and the singer wasn't frail when he last saw him at the end of May. "I've never seen him look better," he said.

_ Two of Jackson's former confidants, medium Uri Geller and ex-bodyguard Matt Fiddes, said they tried in vain to keep the pop superstar from abusing prescription drugs. Geller said he suffered a terrible falling-out with Jackson over the issue, but not before he had to "shout at Michael, to scream at Michael" in an effort to confiscate the singer's stocks of medication during his travels in England.

_ The drug Diprivan, an anesthetic widely used in operating rooms to induce unconsciousness, was found in Jackson's residence, a law enforcement official told the AP. Also known as Propofol, the drug is given intravenously and is very unusual to have in a private home.

_ Cherilyn Lee, a registered nurse, told the AP she repeatedly rejected his demands for Diprivan. But a frantic phone call she received from Jackson four days before his death made her fear that he somehow obtained Diprivan or another drug to induce sleep.

_ Akon, the Senegalese R&B singer and producer with whom Jackson recently recorded songs, told Billboard.com that "Michael is just one of the healthiest people that I know. He was pressuring me to stay healthy, like, 'Akon, eat right. What are you doing out there on the road? Are you eating? Are you exercising? Are you drinking a lot of water?'"

_ Klein said Jackson had been suffering from lupus _ a chronic disease where the immune system attacks the body's own tissue _ and a skin disorder known as vitiligo.

_ Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, administered CPR on Jackson's bed, rather than a hard surface, "with his hand behind his back to provide the necessary support" because the singer was so frail, the doctor's attorney, Edward Chernoff, said.

_ Chernoff also told the AP that Murray never gave or prescribed Jackson the painkillers Demerol or OxyContin, and said the doctor didn't give the pop star any drugs that contributed to his death.

_ Among other things, Murray's lawyers have acknowledged it took up to 30 minutes for paramedics to be summoned to Jackson's home after he was found unresponsive.

_ Jackson's family requested a private autopsy in part because of questions about Murray's role, the Rev. Jesse Jackson has said.

_ Kevin Mazur, a photographer documenting the Staples Center rehearsals for a tour book, told the AP that Jackson looked in perfect health. "He was very upbeat, very happy, having a good time with the dancers," Mazur said.

_ Spiritual teacher Dr. Deepak Chopra told the AP he had been concerned since 2005 that Jackson was abusing painkillers and spoke to the pop star about suspected drug use as recently as six months ago. Chopra said Jackson, a longtime friend, personally asked him for painkillers in 2005; Chopra said he refused.

_ Los Angeles police chief William Bratton said detectives are looking at his prescription drug history and trying to talk with his numerous former doctors. He also says police are waiting for the coroner's report before ruling out any possibilities in their "comprehensive and far-reaching" probe, which includes the Drug Enforcement Administration and the state attorney general's office.

Drug using doesn't mean drug abusing. He might have been taking opioids and benzodiazepenes for legitimate reasons in reasonable, prescribed amounts. Many people, however, mistake any use of such drugs as drug abuse.

Lupus also causes joint pains. It looked like he was suffering from some back pain in that last video made at Staples because you could see him touching his back. He must have been in pain for many years because of this disease.

I'm getting a second opinion and researching any drug prescribed, even over the counter pain killers or fever reducers before I take them.

One of my best friends died from Lupus while in his 20s. Lupus is rare among men and my friend's was not a typical case but the disease made him seem to age decades in the five years from his diagnosis to his death.

My friend had hair loss, skin changes, major arthritis like joint aches and great difficulty sleeping. I cannot imagine Michael Jackson was in good enough condition to perform 10 closely spaced rigorous shows. Fifty shows was out of the question but I do not think he was duped into anything. He was always a shrewd businessman even though he was a shopaholic.

I have watched many interviews and clips of MJ. I believe he was bipolar. Even comments made by his mom about some of his behaviors during the early years point toward that disorder. Martin Bashir's encounter with Michael in Germany when he stated Michael was all hyped up and 'on' (right after dangling his boys over the balcony) and the video accompanying his remarks all point toward a manic phase. My ex husband suffered from manic depression, and I see many similarities.

People have painted him as having everything under the sun and being everything under the sun. He couldn't have been able to perform like he did for his many years and been all that people portray him to be.

He had Lupus and Vitiligo, and was also diagnosed as having some psychological thing where he thought he was a 10 year old. This was done during that interview with Bashir. Speaking of him, he doctored his video footage and changed it so that Michael came off as being "strange". What he did not know is that Michael had his own videographer who filmed even after Bashir's cameras were turned off, which Michael showed in his "rebuttal" interview. It showed that Bashir was a liar, a fake, and he was trying to set Michael up.

If he died, how "healthy" could he have been?

You don't have to be ill to die from certain medications

One good thing has come from all the press coverage. It has been confirmed by Michael's dermatologist that he did indeed have vitiligo. That was the reason for the bleaching of his skin to that ghastly pale hue. Although, Michael said this time and time again over the years, there were many who did not believe him (myself included). We thought the bleaching was done to try to look white. That was part of the reason many thought he was bizarre, (even though we still loved him.)
That particular disease must have been absolutely heartbreaking for him. For a person who worshiped beauty as Michael did, that disfiguring disease in and of itself may have been enough to induce a mind boggling depression. I read a comment by his ex-wife Lisa-Marie that he even wore that make up to bed. And to think he did all that amazing dancing weighed down with such a heavy heart...

It was the burns that messed up his head. He was bald in the back.
Perhaps he was just trying to make his features match his skin.

I don't accept the notion of changing features to match his skin. The transformation appeared to have more to do with Body Dysmorphic Disorder. I also think he may have been anorexic.

While I can understand the desire to have an even skin tone void of speckles, I still don't think that changing features to be more European is necessary. Not everyone of color with vitiligo wants to "tone down" their ethnic features, and they shouldn't have to. It should just be accepted that the person has a skin disease. When I see a black person with albinism, their skin, hair, and eyes may reflect the lack of pigmentation; however, their hair texture and features are still African. They don't look freakish to me, they just look like albinos.

Healthy if you overlook the drug addiction and the obsession to be something more like Liz Taylor than Michael Jackson. Then there's believing he needed all those surgeries and drug, drugs he was willing to obtain from alias'. Yeah he might of appeared healthy but he was actually quite sick.

I think we all need to take a step back and ask ourselves, "Is this our business?" People die each day from a myriad of reasons. Do we poke our noses into their business to find out the cause? No. And I know because they're not always in the public eye. But it isn't our business.

The entertainers only owe us a dance, song, movie or an act in a play. They owe us nothing afterward.

The only thing that can come out of this is that presciption drugs and concierge doctors (even if it is found out that they're not to blame) should be put under the tighter restrictions.

But we need to be respectful. A man is dead and a family is devastated. And three little kids are without their father. Remember that...

All i know is that there is something very suspect about the 50 concerts that were scheduled and Michaels death. I think the big guys behind Michael paid these enablers to be around Michael and pump him full of drugs. They knew the history behind Michael and prescription drugs, the plastic surgeries, etc...and they used that knowing that people would easily blame Michael.

I believe these people knew that Michael was not physically up to performing 50 concerts. Plus, Michael has repeatedly said he hates touring. Also, there was a guy the other night on CNN who was over the financing of the concerts - he said that Michael was not physically up to it...that Michael agreed to 10 concerts...but the AEG booked 50. This guy, at Michael's request, asked if the schedule could be more workable...maybe 2 dates per week...but AEG would not listen.

I just think that those behind this tragedy involve more than the doctors.

Ar.nie Kl.ein - seemed to have a hand in much of Jackson's life.

Did he arrange the marriage and sperm donation?
Did he arrange for Rowe to the sue in 2006 for custody?
He admittedly gave him Demerol? Did he arrange for the Diprevan?

Always behind the scenes....
What role did he play in stealing millions from Jackson?

here's hoping the media will show a little respect for MJ'S family. i worry about his innocent children who obviously loved their father--just remember, GOOD people do BAD things so don't be so quick to judge him.

Here's a crazy thought: Why don't we wait for the toxicology report? Yeah, I know--being patient until the facts are known is not the way things are done these days. It's so much easier to just blurt out rumors and speculation.

I also wonder why Michael needed a personal physician who was a cardiologist. Was a GP not good enough? He needed specialist for the attention paid to his heart and vascular health??? Also Murray just because his doctor due to the AEG insurance requirements and he was chosen? This seems quite suspect.
