WASHINGTON — Republicans lined up Sunday in opposition to a second economic stimulus package, a rare demonstration of unity from an out-of-power political party in search of a rallying cry against President Barack Obama.

Republicans called Obama's $787 billion spending plan a "flop" and said it hasn't fulfilled its hype. They criticized the White House for increasing the federal deficit and doing little to combat an unemployment rate that hit 9.5 percent in June.

"The reality is it hasn't helped yet," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. "Only about 6.8 percent of the money has actually been spent. What I proposed is, after you complete the contracts that are already committed, the things that are in the pipeline, stop it."

Obama urged patience with his spending program, which administration officials acknowledge was designed with incorrect or incomplete economic data.

"The stimulus package is working exactly as we had anticipated," Obama told CNN in an interview from Ghana that aired on Sunday.

"We always anticipated that a big chunk of that money then would be spent not only in the second half of the year, but also next year. This was designed to be a two-year plan and not a six-month plan," he said.

Republicans, though, were not willing to sit by idly.

"I do think it is fair to say that the stimulus is a flop," said Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va. "The goal that was set when we passed it was unemployment wouldn't rise past 8.5 percent, and what we see now is businesses just aren't hiring. Even the best projections have us losing 750,000 more jobs this year."

Congress passed Obama's economic stimulus plan over the objection of out-of-power Republican lawmakers. Since then, GOP aides on Capitol Hill and officials alike have seized on the spending's shortcomings and unfilled promises.

"A lot of it has been spent on ridiculous projects," said Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican who was his party's presidential nominee last year.

Obama's allies defended the spending they helped usher into law.

"It's a two-year plan and we're four months into it," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

Some, including billionaire Warren Buffett, have called for a second round of spending to steady the economy. Obama and his allies have said it's too early to make that decision; his critics, though, pledged to redouble their opposition to any second spending bill.

"I think that would be the biggest mistake we could ever make," McCain said.

Kyl and Durbin appeared on ABC's "This Week." Cantor spoke with "Fox News Sunday." McCain was interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press."

They should run this post right along side the one with all those smiling faces at Golaman Sachs.
Behold the "jobless recovery" being touted by Summers and Giethner.
We simply cannot afford to throw money at stimulus spending while at the same time propping up
the status quo casino mentality that has become our economy.
Without fundamental changes to the foundations of our banking systems and a MINDSET that moves
us away from viewing debt as a salable product, the only thing we are going to stimulate are the investment bankers and their friends in high places.

FreeMarket is alot like Amway. You buy some soap detergent and that's that. The next thing you know you are signing a application to be a sales rep for Amway. But when you question "Free Market Inc" too deeply of their motives on the following

Fraud/Hoax-"You can't possibly understand the financial instruments that are involved" Translation; Our methods are really complicated in order to confuse you and hope you dont see that we arent creating anything just chaos that we sustain our income on.

Financial Records-"That is none of the government's business!" Whenever a Free market is in trouble the apologists come out and shout down any chance of finding out if these investing companies are frauds or unethical. Actually, I think it is the govt's business if these companies are asking for welfare to help them.

Proof/Evidence:last refuge of a desperate ilk who refuse to believe that their system was a lie for economic stability moreso for economic prosperity for a chosen few. We can't prove it because these companies are scared to hand over their books and records. Because creating smoke is hazardous when you base your entire enterprise on it.

Advice for Temple of Freemarket intiators: Maybe the profit really isnt there&it's just a lie to keep you believing in a broken down system just like Fundamentalist Christianity. Maybe followers that inhabit Huff-Po could realize the delusion that the econ system is emerging in our country.

Playing on Americans' impatience is a foolish ploy. Of course the magnitude of the recession and systemic defects in the economy mean recovery is going to take years, not months. Perhaps the GOP picked Eric Cantor to push the ploy because a fool is the best person to perform a pointless, transparent job.

A look at the Great Depression shows what could be ahead--or at least the complexity of the problems and the solutions.

I think of this even more vicious than the great depression. It's the "Great Oppression" The system has become too mutated by corruption to be able to function in a semi healthy fashion . People are going to rejoice when they are working again. But this time there are going to be some slight adjustments.

Vacations from work are going to be even more nonexistent. (Afterall you just came from vacation! )
More work hours to compete with the rising empires of China and India
Wages will be decreased drastically to compete with other countries profit margins
Stock Market will become more rogue
The intellectual giants of the 21st century will invent "instruments" to mislead us how bad as a country we are doing financially.

The problem we have are the scoffers who still think that we are going to return good as new after we "Recover" The difference is,Ladies and Gentleman, the corporate stranglehold is too intense to fight back. Which leads us to a grim realization: We were lied to. There is no backup plan. Capitalism will destroy a country with no regulations or guidelines. Free Market only exists in a investor trainee film. Bon Voyage!

Ridiculous that he has to ask for patience after six months. Some of us are an embarassment we need quick fixes and instant riches thats what gets us in trouble and we never learn.

I agree. Do you think the Great Depression hobos were this immature toward FDR? This economy will rebound, and there will be payback in 2010 though.

Let's see, what was the GOP's plan for the reviving the economy? Oops, they didn't have one. Unless you count more tax breaks for the wealthy (been there, done that, helped us get into this mess). Otherwise, their plan was do what they do best: nothing.

Since the President has a Super Majority in Congress, I think I'd focus on him and not the GOP.

This fianacial will get worse until someone begins to hold Obama accountable, instead of making more excuses for him.

To be truthful, since Obama says no one offered up an alternative. rethugs did offer an alternative and at least one democrat did, Idaho's Rep. Walt Minnick. Unfortunately, none of their proposals were allowed to come to the floor. People don't have time for these excuses. Like the credit card reform which doesn't take affect till NEXT YEAR???? now the stimulus is a two year plan???

Poor planning for the worst recession since the 1930s.

The Rethugs did propose that ALL spending be stopped immediately. That worked well for Hoover, didn't it?

It's hardly just Republicans who are unhappy with Obama.

His numbers are sinking, among Democrats and Independents, and for good reason.

As more realize he's not the liberal they had hoped 'Obama the stealth candidate' would be once he got in office, and that he's not the populist they had wished for, and as the true picture of this worsening economy hits more of us where we live, his numbers will continue to dive. And that's a good thing for us, We The People.

That is the ONLY way Obama and Democrats will abandon their pro-Corporate, anti-populist ways (and we might even get some investigations, hearings and prosecutions into the Bush years), and get them to regulate, and give us single payer universal health care.

It is not much noticed amid the general gloom and doom about the economy, but Wall St. firms like Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs are cutting their estimates for the rate of GDP contraction in the second quarter. Some are even forecasting growth. It seems all too clear that the second quarter will show dramatic improvement over the first.

There is a big disconnect between GDP and joblessness, but there could be good economic news soon.

Could it be the stimulus is working? Republicans and those liberals who are over-invested in economic failure could have egg on their faces pretty soon.

Via Sullivan,

The trade numbers were much better than expected. Brad DeLong predicts the future: Now that we have the May trade figures, the modal forecast is (i) an economy that was flat in the second quarter relative to the first quarter, (ii) an economy that starts to grow relatively slowly in the third quarter, and (iii) an unemployment rate that keeps rising for another one and a half to two years--like it did in 1992 and 2002--as the old-fashioned business-cycle productivity-employment pattern is broken once again. Bob Hall's [National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER)] committee is likely to proclaim that recovery began sometime in the second quarter, but it won't feel like a recovery to workers (as opposed to asset owners) for quite some time to come.

That means "asset owners" recover.....workers...not so much. Where were the repugs when their party shipped the jobs to a totalitarian communist ,forced abortion, slave wage state? did they think the china deal was about freedom?

Do you have any links regarding the Wall Street firms estimates for GDP and changes?

The BEA figures wont be out until July 29, and the next Conference Board LEI report should be out this week.

It will be very interesting to see the economic news soon. IMO there still may be contractions of GDP in 2nd Q , the contractions annualized were significant -- in the 6% and 5% range for 4 Q 2008 and 1Q 2009.

I am sure all of us want it to work. No normal person wants it to fail, but it just doesn't feel like the odds are in our favor. No one seems to know how to do their job. No one seems to be looking at the problems of we the people. All of the focus is on the banks and Wall Street. We the people need jobs to create growth and wealth. We need a healthy middle class. When only the top 1% thrives what good will that be for growth? We need factories building solar panels, solar shingles, and wind turbines. We need people to install them on single family homes to get them off the outdated and over worked grid. This would help stop MTR that is so harmful to our water and soil. We need cars that get 100 mpg. Revive our industrial and manufacturing base, and huge growth will follow.

"'For every day we wait or point fingers or drag our feet, more Americans will lose their jobs,' Obama said at a speech in Fairfax, Virginia. on Jan. 8. At that time the unemployment rate was 7.2 percent. Obama also claimed that the country would face double-digit unemployment without the stimulus package while the Congressional Budget Office forecast was slightly lower: 9 percent unemployment by 2010.

To boost support for his stimulus, Obama"s economic team released a report that estimated unemployment wouldn"t rise above 8 percent with a stimuIus package, according to Associated Press."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31165217/

"Obama initiaIly offered his stimulus plan as a way to put people back to work, a promise that 3.5 million jobs would be saved or created. The administration's predictions that unemployment would rise no higher than 8 percent already have been shattered."

Why should I be patient when you shoved this through by saying it was needed this moment???

It was needed. Imagine the unemployment if the Recovery Act had not help stifle unemployment. Near 700K jobs lost in all months, except May and June.

Moreover, those who lost their jobs, receive help with COBRA and longer unemployment. That, too is part of the Recovery Act.

Obama rushed it through, claiming that immediate passage of it would prevent 8% unemployment. That reason was not only objectionable, but turned out completely wrong anyway. My question is why he is telling us to be patient when it has already faiIed his expectations. I think he is asking for patience because he doesn't want to be blamed for these unemployment numbers we see now.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
Unemployment rates monthly
Jan. 2009 7.6
Feb. 8.1
Mar 8.5
Apr 8.9
May 9.4
June 9.5

FYI During the entire Bush years lowest rate was 4.2 in Jan 2001 and it NEVER was that low again, even after the Bush 2001 tax cuts. And the rate kept increasing until Oct 2003

BTW the first Bush recession was only 8 months in duration starting in March 2001.
