WASHINGTON — Republicans lined up Sunday in opposition to a second economic stimulus package, a rare demonstration of unity from an out-of-power political party in search of a rallying cry against President Barack Obama.

Republicans called Obama's $787 billion spending plan a "flop" and said it hasn't fulfilled its hype. They criticized the White House for increasing the federal deficit and doing little to combat an unemployment rate that hit 9.5 percent in June.

"The reality is it hasn't helped yet," said Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz. "Only about 6.8 percent of the money has actually been spent. What I proposed is, after you complete the contracts that are already committed, the things that are in the pipeline, stop it."

Obama urged patience with his spending program, which administration officials acknowledge was designed with incorrect or incomplete economic data.

"The stimulus package is working exactly as we had anticipated," Obama told CNN in an interview from Ghana that aired on Sunday.

"We always anticipated that a big chunk of that money then would be spent not only in the second half of the year, but also next year. This was designed to be a two-year plan and not a six-month plan," he said.

Republicans, though, were not willing to sit by idly.

"I do think it is fair to say that the stimulus is a flop," said Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va. "The goal that was set when we passed it was unemployment wouldn't rise past 8.5 percent, and what we see now is businesses just aren't hiring. Even the best projections have us losing 750,000 more jobs this year."

Congress passed Obama's economic stimulus plan over the objection of out-of-power Republican lawmakers. Since then, GOP aides on Capitol Hill and officials alike have seized on the spending's shortcomings and unfilled promises.

"A lot of it has been spent on ridiculous projects," said Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican who was his party's presidential nominee last year.

Obama's allies defended the spending they helped usher into law.

"It's a two-year plan and we're four months into it," said Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill.

Some, including billionaire Warren Buffett, have called for a second round of spending to steady the economy. Obama and his allies have said it's too early to make that decision; his critics, though, pledged to redouble their opposition to any second spending bill.

"I think that would be the biggest mistake we could ever make," McCain said.

Kyl and Durbin appeared on ABC's "This Week." Cantor spoke with "Fox News Sunday." McCain was interviewed on NBC's "Meet the Press."

•Joblessness is hitting men harder than women.

Unemployment among men rose to 10 percent, just 0.1 percentage point below its previous post-World War II high in December 1982, noted Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. The unemployment rate for women was 7.5 percent last month.

This is a double whammy to both families and to single parent households depending on child support payments.

I suggest you take your complaints to the management, and off this thread where it is OFF SUBJECT.

I don't think that giving statistics and speculating is in any way troIIish... maybe you assume that since it is a different view than yours, which shows a close-minded view of the world.

How can something that has been in operation for so short of time to solve such a big problem be successful instantly? It cannot.

Obama has been in office 6 months; the Recovery Act was signed 5 months ago.

Much to do.

I think everyone is aware of how badly the Bush administration has left it for us. I think a little patience is called for. These statistics are all as reported, but really don't address the post - six months is not very long to overcome what we have now. Faith.

Mr. Obama says, wait............ You do not have to wait, just add up the numbers, the amount of money we have coming in, is not enough to ever repay the money he is spending.

Countries around the world know full well that what this administration's policies are so bad that they will not be able to sell their products to us, because we will not be able to afford them.

When China, Russia and India, are seriously considering replacing the dollar as reserve currency, and this administration shows no leadership to stop them, what is there to wait for.
Do you think if they knew that Mr. Obama's policies were going to help, would they be trying to get out of their dollar bills?

Although 9 in 10 members of the American work force are employed, the average workweek fell in June to 33 hours, the lowest level on record since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began tracking it in 1964. For the last seven years, the weekly average fluctuated from 33.6 to 33.9 hours.

Shorter workweeks and the growth of part-time, rather than full-time, jobs are slicing into overall earnings. With 14.7 million unemployed workers, an oversupply of labor is allowing employers to hire people for less money.

What is it that we're waiting for? Magic?

While Americans are being patient, what's supposed to change? What's Obama and Congress doing? Shifting more of what's left of our money into the pockets of the wealthy?

467,000 jobs lost last month, increasing over previous month.

Each downturn, more downturn:

U.S. Stocks Slide in Dow’s Worst Drop Since April on Jobs Data:

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aDo__Kt9c3Ps

When stocks slide, expect more jobs lost. More jobs lost, more foreclosures. It's a vicious cycle and Obama is NOT doing what's necessary to blunt it.

The 'patient' (We The People) has been sliced and diced for the past several decades, with major cuts to our arteries these last 8 years. The 'patient' is now bleeding out.

The Dow has actually leveled off since February and has had a good spurt despite jobs lost. It remains persistent.

And, we are waiting for the recovery to begin. On Obama's watch, a recession that began in December 2007 is slowing . Recessions take their toll on many. It matters what is being done to regain the jobs lost.

The Recovery Act is stifling job loss and when it is rolled out completely, many jobs will be regained.

Compare jobs lost in May and June to jobs lost in any other two months. The sharp decline is decreasing. For instance, close to 700K jobs per month since November and 320K in May and 470K in June. The decline is slowing.

Obama didn't break it, but he's sure been an accessory after the fact.

The Obama administration is Bush's third term (the oligarchy continues, with Obama as their tool) domestically and Bill Clinton's third term on foreign policy. Let's remember that Democrats have been fully on board with Bush's wars, and their only complaint was in how Bush waged the wars -- They would have done it differently. Let's also not forget that Dems voted for every one of Bush's budgets, funded Bush's wars, failed to oversee the spending and the torture and intelligence.

Given the faith that so many Americans, particularly liberal Democrats, had and put in Obama, for change in policies and methods, in justice and fairness, it's a tragedy. And unless and until Obama's most ardent supporters wake up and stop propping up his poll numbers, they and the rest of us on the left (and all ordinary Americans) are going to treading water until we eventually drown.

I'm willing to give patience, not a prob.
After all, it took only 8 years for GW to not only go through a surplus, but also to spend an additional trillion after that.
So, I will give Obama his 8 years and see what he and the dems can do since it is quite obvious the republican ideas were not doing what they told us they should.

THOM HARTMANN: From the Great Depression until basically the ReaganAdministration, we had a national industrial policy where we made things in the United States. We no longer have that.

Combine the fact that we no longer protect our economy here in the United States with the fact that we've moved from a manufacturing economy to a service economy (and there's an absolute limit to how many times we can call "If you mow my lawn and I wash your car" 'creating wealth').

On top of that, what Reagan's chief economic adviser, David Stockman, said was overt: That they ran up a $3 trillion debt (tripling the national debt, borrowing more money than every president in the history of the United States combined specifically so that when the Reagan Administration left office there'd be so much debt that the Democrats wouldn't be able to expand social security or have a national health care program.

[And on top of that, Bush's wars, tax cuts for the rich, TARP, and the stimulus.]

I don't see a way out of this, do you?
