PHILADELPHIA — A private suburban swim club accused of racism after it canceled the memberships of dozens of minority children says it will seek a meeting with the kids' camps to work out an agreement for them to return.

Amy Goldman, a member of The Valley Club, said those able to attend a hastily called meeting Sunday afternoon voted unanimously in support of reinstating the memberships of the Creative Steps day camp and two other camps as long as safety issues, times and terms can be agreed upon.

The Creative Steps camp had arranged for 65 mostly black and Hispanic children to swim each Monday afternoon at the gated Huntingdon Valley club, which is on a leafy hillside in a village straddling two overwhelmingly white townships. But after the group arrived June 29, camp director Alethea Wright said, several children reported hearing racial comments and some swim club members pulled their children out of the pool.

The camp's $1,950 was refunded a few days later.

The president of the swim club's board of directors, John Duesler, has said the decision was made out of safety considerations, not racial concerns.

"We have near-unanimous approval from our membership, so at this point we'll be figuring out ... how to approach all the camps and see how we can move forward," Duesler told WPVI-TV at the club's entrance on Sunday.

The swim club has claimed it has a diverse, multiethnic membership, but Goldman, a member for two years, said she couldn't remember seeing a black member this year.

Goldman said members were told that the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, which has opened an investigation, is to make a fact-finding visit to the club July 30. U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., said Friday he had asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate "to determine what action, if any, is warranted by the Civil Rights Division."

Others to criticize the club include the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the United States' highest-profile black swimmer, Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones, who said Thursday that "hearing about what's happened to these 65 kids is both disturbing and appalling."

Chuck Wielgus, executive director of USA Swimming, the governing body for the U.S. swim team, said he was stunned by the accusations against the club.

Wright, the camp director, didn't immediately return a telephone call seeking comment Sunday evening. She said earlier that other institutions had offered to host her group at their pools for the summer.

Camp parent Silvia Carvalho said she hadn't heard about the club's action but didn't believe her 9-year-old daughter, Araceli, would be willing to return.

"She has already said so," Carvalho said Sunday night. "She doesn't want people to look at her the same way."

Okay. Let's agree that prejudice and bigotry exists in America and in the rest of the world. So if there is a belief that AA's in the US don't speak up for gay people it's okay to cause a group of children so much grief? There are likely gays who don't like any people of color and there are no doubt people of color who don't like gays. So? Prejudice, ignorance and bigotry knows no color, creed or sexual preference.

True. To capitalize from yet another horr ible act of blantant ra cism by interjecting s exual being, IMO, is a little self-absorbed ! What exactly does AA children have to do with anyone's se xual culture !

No such thing as a sexual culture. Sexism, racism and homphobia are all linked. But I agree to bring up gay rights in the middle of this is odd. And I say this as "a gay".

Glady's46, sexual culture has nothing to do with African American children. We all remember how hateful and gay Harry Hoover was, now don't we?

You can bet the same scenario would occur should these kids try to swim at countless places in our country. These places, comments, and people need to be exposed to sunlight, in both their lives and their thoughts! Check out gov. sanford and C street pals' swim clubs, for a start!

I agree, the kids have been hurt enough. Let the club members publicly say how wrong they were, apologize, admit the error of their ways and get ready for a lawsuit.

DO NOT USE THE CHILDREN FOR MISTAKES THEY DIDN'T CREATE.

Katie 5, as a black mother of 3 sons, I can understand your plea, but in this racist society black and hispanic kids have to face this as children, because it's not going to stop when they are adults, they must learn to face and deal with a ugly situation not of there making, in order to cope in america. I do regret that they had to be exposed to this, but in most black families we must alert our kids to this type of behavior, and prepare them for being black in america, I taught and do continue to teach my sons tolerance, but I must also warn them, thing like what happen to these minority kids have, will, and continue to happen to them, but they have the mental armor to withstand it because they know that these bigots do not speak for all whites. My heart goes out to all the children involved, including the children of the white parents who made the statements, their kids are being abused with hate of racism.

What a pity that these children have to be exposed to this type of thing in the 21st Century. As much as we would like to spin a new myth about an all-inclusive multi-racial America in the hope that if you believe enough it will come true, our bubble can be burst with just one such incident.

Don't ever go "back" ... go forward even though this has most probably made its indelible place in those kid's minds ... it is a day in the life of most minorities in this so-called "free" nation ! Don't h ate bi gots, just know that they exists ... build around and above them !

I would not go back, they already disrespected you, and I'm pretty sure their racist view haven't changed. Their only letting them back in because they are embarrassed.

They are not just "embarrassed" they are headed to court, class action lawsuit .... this so-called high scale area in Philly, 2009, to that adorable little boy showned on the news, weeping, no "this" r a cism has never ended ! Inspite of that fact, there are laws which will mitigate his pain.

Don't go back. Find another club, find another activity, or just let the kids run through the sprinklers on their own Campgrounds. Whatever you do, don't go back.

groda63 has this right. Honestly, if you as an adult were relaxing by the pool and suddenly 65 CHILDREN arrived, please don't pretend this wouldn't be annoying! Kids are loud and busy, God love them. Let's be honest about that part at least. No doubt some people at that club have some negative feelings about minorities but you are not going to ever completely erase racism. Remember the guy we elected to be our president? We've come a long way as a society.

Yeah you've got a point there! Those kids would bring their loud Rap Music and be talking to your kids like they were equals or something crazy. Thank goodness the Swim Club was willing to keep the "Complexion" of the pool the same shade, so you can enjoy your pool time.

Oh yeah, every body just loves President Obama... Yeah we've come a long way as a society, but Utopia it ain't!

Yeah, I'm sure racism is totally dead and never ever ever a problem in anybody's life any more! Or mostly dead, and hey, who cares anyway, it's pointless to resist racism! Whatevs, yo!

Oh, come on patriot, just because a man of color has been elected president, does not mean that all of us have joined hands and are singing Kumbaya. Yes, kids are loud and busy...kids are...but just because they are brown kids....it was easy enough for those so called people to treat them rudely, make comments, probably gawk and SCAR many of those impressionable children. You act as if it was soley based on the fact that they were children, when you know good and well most intelligent adults, would not willingly harm a child. These people saw color before children and they were busted when they kicked them out for "changing the complexion" of the club. YOU KNOW WHAT THEY MAY HAVE DONE?!!!! POSSIBLY, created a next Louis Farakkhan or a future home grown Jihadist. Whenever, the majority of Americans take a few steps forward, there are always people, like the ones in this club, who keep us stagnate with three steps back. This is why, you will never completely erase racism.

Sad story.
unfortunately hate is "learned" in all races
babies are not born with prejudice.
regardless of color all children need to be loved and cherished and nurtured and VALUED.
i believe all childen are "gifts" to humanity that we (adults) dont forget how to love and value each other and color shouldnt matter.
I am a conservative but when it comes to babies and children... I am a mush

While I am pleased to see the reversal of action; I am sure that These kids will be scheduled to swim A DAY BEFORE THE POOL IS DRAINED FOR MAINTAINCE, thereby relieving any WHITE PATRON'S FEAR.

You couldn't pay me to send my kids to that pool. Next thing they'll have on the News is that one of the black children drowned accidently. I sure hope the parents don't send them back there.

If I were those kids, I'm never going to go back to the club. There's no sincerity on accepting the kids back, only to do damage control. So to hell with the club!

Why the sudden change of heart? Are they surprised that people are enraged and are asking them to behave like we live in the twenty-first century? Or did they really think they could get away with it?

There's a reason why they live in those suburbs...to get away from certain people.
It's likely a class issue as much as it is a racial one; they pay their dues so they can claim their high-status...so why have that mucked with kids from some charity camp?

Either way it is an outrage. Class seperation, race seperation. It is one group of people feeling they are better then another group of people.

Money does not make you better, if this case does not show that as obvious, it just makes you richer.

But then why accept their $1950? Didn't they even bother to find out who was paying them? Seems to me not just bigoted, but GREEDY and bigoted! I seriously doubt any of those children will want to go "back". And I hope their parents make it clear just how many people rose up in support of them; might help with the healing.
