What a sad situation. I suggest the kid be put on a suicide watch though.

Might have been a freak accident, might have been that the unfortunate boy didn't have a clue, maybe the match-up was ridiculously one-sided and the adults running the show should have known that.

Who'd have thought that kicking each other in the neck for "sport" would turn out to be a bad idea?

Yeah, because there aren't injuries in any "non-violent" sports...

This kid was incredibly brave to show up at the wake, and even more courageous to apologize to the Mother. It's incredibly unfortunate that this happened, but no one is at fault. I can only hope there isn't another casualty due to this young man's depression.

ANY time that you spar, death is a real possibility. This is a very rare time that that possibility became a reality.

This was such a misfortunate accident. I give the teen so much credit for showing his respect to the family and owning up to the mishap. I wish both families the best in coping with this horrible accident.

I don't much about this sport but I hope they revisit different belt levels fighting, which is obviously (as seen here) unfair to the less experienced fighter. However this sounds like a freak accident, that most likely could have happened if two people from the same belt level were to have fought.

I feel awful for the mother who lost her child, and the teenager who now will have to live with having unintentionally taken someone's life. This is a tragedy all the way around.

More teenagers die from BASKETBALL than tae kwon do. Basketball has the most sport related injuries per capita than any other sport.

It was just a sad situation. I feel down a flight of stairs yesterday but was lucky enough to catch myself at the end. Should stairs be banned?

Oh please. This was a tragic accident.

But guess what, every sport has tragic accidents. You know how many people get killed in bicycling, hiking? Not to mention sports like football, hockey, rugby, race car driving, skydiving, etc, etc?

Anything that's at all physically intense is going to carry a degree of risk.

I think this article adds more clarity to the incident

http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNews/Singapore/Story/STIStory_401727.html

Apparently, the deceased was fighting an opponent two belts above him. I have no knowledge of the rules governing taekwando. But can someone fight an individual with a higher belt grade? I would reckon that the victim's opponent would have been way more experienced than the victim himself, and as such it might have been a very unequal bout from the start.

The father of this boy embraced the other boy in the fight and the two wept together and he encouraged him to stick with hockey.

You cannot blame the 15 year old lad too much. It is a violent sport, mistakes and injuries are par for the course.

Obviously you do not go out to kill and the boy must be distraught. Just shows how things can get out of hand when aggression is encouraged.

But that is life!
