Although I'm glad to hear it, it is taking way too long and will take another 20 years before we see it everywhere. In the meantime, I just do alternative treatment on my own.

Thumbs up to alternatives that bring patients comfort--
Though as a first step lets get hospitals feeding children healthy foods-
The Imus ranch not only real food but organic-
How can anyone get well with what they serve children in our hospitals.

I agree with you 100%

My hospital is a non profit cancer hospital that offers and encourages acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, and meditation for palliative care with cancer patients- which have been wonderful resources for patients.

But hospital food is an aspect that often gets overlooked. Healthy eating is a necessity- yet many hospitals which stress healthy eating to their patients then provide them with unhealthy food within the hospital! Another huge problem is that hospital food tends to taste horrible! There are so many cases of feeble or elderly patients who aren't eating and who then are put on feeding tubes- when in fact they would have eaten, if only they'd been given food that was the least bit palatable. Even hospitals which serve more natural, less processed foods often do nothing to make these foods tasty.

Another big issue is MARIJUANA. This is one of the best alternative treatment out there for a whole host of problems, but especially with things like cancer, as it eases both pain and nausea from chemo. I don't know any doctor (though I'm not saying they don't exist) who doesn't realize the incredible benefits of marijuana. The illegality of marijuana for mainstream society is bad enough...but its illegality even for medical purposes is shameful and inexcusable.

I also should mention that my dad was recently at St Vincent's Hospital in Worcester, Ma. He was hospitalized for some time after surgery...but the food there was both fresh and wonderful! He couldn't believe it, and he talked about how much it improved his experience at having to be in patient- he had three delicious meals to look forward too! Other patients on the floor with him also talked about how much the food had improved their hospital experience.

"Some of the nation's top hospitals are embracing alternative medicine to supplement traditional healing. Are we onto something?"

Of course! The answer is, "yes", we are onto something.

Finally it's getting out that the only logical & reasonable way to go is to utilize the best of both.

This seems to be happening more and more.

Children's Hospital in Los Angeles recently added a pediatric acupuncture program.

This is excellent news...

i just read an excellent article by Martha Libster, PhD., C.N.S., R.N., she is an educator and health care historian known internationally for her work on complementarity of nursing practice and healing traditions, particularly the use of botanical therapies.

Check out her books: "Demonstrating Care: The Art of Integrative Nursing" , "The Integrative Herb Guide for Nurses" and her latest "Enlightened Charity"
