Chris Matthews: "I'm Getting One Of Those Thrills" About Sotomayor (VIDEO)

Chris Matthews feels similarly about Sonia Sotomayor during her confirmation hearings as he did about Barack Obama during his Presidential campaign. Specifically, the thrill is back.

"Well, I'm getting one of those thrills I get about America," Matthews said Monday on MSNBC during coverage of Sotomayor's confirmation hearings. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't say this, and I'm getting it again. When she talked about sitting at that table and not being a genius like Barack Obama, not being one of those people that can walk into a college scholarship, who had to sweat for it..."

Matthews was responsible for one of the more quotable lines from 2008 election coverage when, following Obama's speech following the Potomac Primary in February, the MSNBC anchor announced, "I felt this thrill going up my leg."

I thought I heard them say she got a full scholarship to Princeton. Am I wrong? She also said it was not due to her grades but to affirmative action. So much for sweating for it.

she was the valedictorian of her high school class! she definitely had the grades! plus, she graduated at the top of class at princeton. if she did not deserve to be there, she could not have pulled that off!

Affirmative action done right (as in this case) consists of finding the best and brightest among the traditionally suppressed classes and giving them a chance they otherwise would not get. It does not entail, as you seem to think, merely picking a minority student at random and giving him or her a free ticket.

MSNBC has fine number for cable news. The difference is that intelligent conservatives and most liberals have tons of options, whereas right-wing ideologues all watch Fox.

Remember, Fox Bled money for years until it developed a devoted, cult-like following from a group of viewer that is significant for cable news, but would be severely anemic for network news. This is why Murdoch goes in and props up otherwise unsustainable right-wing media ventures.

If you *really* believed in the market, Fox would never have survived past its first year.
