Just got done watching Morning Joe, Liz Cheney was trying to defend this while debating Eugene Robinson. Sorry Liz, you must of fail government in school. Dear old dad (Dicky) didn't have the power or the right to direct anyone. His job was soley to break tie votes. The congress has power your father took it illegally. Former VP Cheney tried to treat the CIA like his own person brown shirt squad. The sorry excuse we heard from the former Bush WH is just that, "for the good of the country" is the method works its ok?". No you just do away with our laws and the values this country was built on.

Can you just imagine the screams from the right if a Dem President pulled the stunts Bush did and tried to claim it was "for the good of the country"?

OMG! They would be up in arms! Screaming for impeachment en masse!! Such hypocrits. Dems are way too nice and reasonable in my opinion.

I, for one, have a real problem with the VP of the US having this kind of power. The Constitution is pretty clear - be on deck in case the President is incapacitated, break ties.

Some may argue that the President was.....But for the VP to 'control' the CIA, methinks that was illegal.

Was this revelation the result of the secret that was kept and just now disclosed? And, if the 'normal' channel of disclosure way back when the 'idea' was started, would it still be a secret? I think so. Many other secrets have been kept.

How was this funded in the budget? Was is line item - 'secret ideas not yet disclosed...$1billion/year'?

Secretly ceding presidential authorities to the vp is at least misleading and at best illegal ! The nation had a right to know that c heney was an ad hoc president !

"The director of the CIA was unaware, for many months, that this program existed"

So who was in charge and running the program if it was not even disclosed to the CIA director?

Then why was it necessary for Panetta to immediately stop it? Sorry, that's not logical!

Wow, trolls are coming out in full force on this one. They're scared to death that their precious Dick is finally in a pickle he can't bully his way out of. I can't wait to see him squirming on the hot seat. The man is pure evil. He thinks the laws don't apply to him, and he has contempt for the American people and citizens of the world.

Give us a break...didn't everyone believe that our government was going after al Qaeda with everything possible? Didn't everyone expect that the CIA would be involved? This is nothing but a smoke screen designed to rile up the Hannity/Beck/Cheney lovers so they could accuse Dems of being 'soft'. Did you hear Liz Cheeney this morning on mourning joke? We aren't all that dumb.

This can't be the whole story. Haven't we been trying to assassinate al Qaeda at least the last 8 years? I'm sure they thought we were and if we weren't I want my tax money back.

I saw a story on Russian news that said that Benazir Bhutto may have been one of the victims of this hit squad. I pray this isn't true.

How clever is it to color this illegal activity (whatever it was) as being about AQ, and protecting "us" ... well, some people just can't seem to find their way out of a brown paper bag with a flashlight & a pair of scissors ... so, the de vil made GW break this nation's laws ... is that what we're being fed ... ok !

We always know when we are getting closer to the truth when Liz Cheney comes on Morning Joe and desperately defends Daddy. Once we know the whole truth, Liz will recede into the West and Daddy will be seen being pushed in his wheelchair, fishing for the sympathy he has never had for others. The most honorable thing this nation can do is to convict this war criminal and place him in the stripy hole for the remainder of this miserable life.

I think there should be an investigation of Panetta for putting an end to this program without consulting Congress. A program aimed at ki//ing terrorists and protecting innocent lives seems reasonable and Panetta should have consulted with the /iar of the house, Nancy Pelosi, before unilaterally deciding to end the program.

Few despise Disk Cheney as much as I do, but I have no problem with this program on principle. There are a few elite groups of operators that work under the direct authority of the White House or SECDEF.

Richard Marcinko detailed these problems when he created SEAL team 6 and the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRUP), the Navy's counterterror unit and the maritime version of Special Forces Operational Detachment DELTA. These units' timetables are a matter of hours, sometimes less. They require a simplified chain of command and plausible deniability. They will observe a target and gather intel, and then when they need to strike, it's only a matter of a phone call, or less.

The problem arises when you can't trust the VP or white house officials in charge of giving the green light.

It is a federal crime to hide intelligence operations from the Congressional Intelligence Committees.

Cheney broke the law.

What we're really talking about here is not an Intel program but a targeted assassination/disruption program. I understand the rule of law argument, but Black Ops are just that. They take place under risky circumstances and will be denied if discovered. That's what the operators understand and accept as their job, and only ask to be able to do it. Special Ops are not conventional forces and their work is rarely for public consumption.

This is nothing new and there are far less now than there were during the Cold War. Ask the guy looking at Bin Laden through a high powered scope if he can wait a couple more days to take the shot.

Since appropriate Congressional leaders were never briefed on this stuff, just how is it known who the he ck was being targeted ? Obviously, by ceding presidential authorities to ch eney, whatever he deemed appropriate and/or legal was in the hands of an unelected, ad hoc president ... is that it ?

What the heck!
The only real news would have been if the CIA was NOT doing something like this.
I DEMAND as a citizen that they do their job and work to protect us, attempt to eliminate the enemy. etc.

Thank god they are working at it. (They just did not know that the enemy had infiltrated the Democratic party of the nation. I bet that was a wake up call. Look into the scope to save the country and see that the threat was some of the people they are working to defend!)

Failure to inform Congress of secret intelligence operations is against federal law.
