BEIJING — Jackie Chan will play the wise kung-fu master in a Hollywood-Chinese remake of the 1984 hit "The Karate Kid" that kicked off filming in the Chinese capital at the weekend, a movie company publicist said Monday.

Chan's young disciple in "Kung Fu Kid" will be played by Jaden Smith, the son of Hollywood superstars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, China Film Group spokesman Weng Li told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

In "The Karate Kid," Pat Morita plays the iconic building handyman Mr. Miyagi who trains one of his young tenants, portrayed by Ralph Macchio, into an accomplished fighter.

The co-production between the state-run China Film Group and Columbia Pictures started shooting Saturday in Beijing, Weng said.

"Kung Fu Kid" is being directed by Harald Zwart, who also directed "One Night at McCool's" and "The Pink Panther 2," Solon So, the chief executive of Chan's company, JC Group, told the AP.

Chan and Smith, along with Smith's parents and sister Willow, attended a traditional Chinese ceremony to mark the start of the shoot Saturday. Photos on China Film Group's movie news Web site show the Smith family and Chan holding incense sticks.

Will Smith _ one of the film's producers _ Chan, Zwart and others symbolically removed a piece of red cloth covering a movie camera, after which Smith gave Chan a hug, according to video posted on Chinese news Web site Sina.com. His hair done in a huge Afro and wearing a bright red track jacket and blue pants, Jaden Smith stood and waved when he was introduced. His father ruffled his hair when he sat down.

Chan said on his Web site he also attended the younger Smith's 11th birthday party last Wednesday, where he and Will Smith posed for pictures with young performers wearing red and yellow costumes with dragon patterns.

Ken Stovitz, one of Will Smith's partners in the production company Overbrook Entertainment, said at the ceremony Saturday that "Kung Fu Kid" will be set in modern-day Beijing. China Film Group chairman Han Sanping said shooting will last three months.

Chan juggles careers in Hollywood and Chinese-language film. The veteran 55-year-old Hong Kong action star will be seen in the upcoming the Hollywood action comedy "The Spy Next Door," about an undercover Chinese spy whose cover is blown, and the Chinese production, "Big Soldier," about the friendship between two soldiers set in China's ancient Qin dynasty.

Jaden Smith costarred with his father in the 2006 movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" and appeared in the 2008 Keanu Reeves sci-fi movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still."

gotta love the hating on here. hmmm...movie staring jackie chan and produced by will smith. yup, sounds like it's gonna be a fail alright. how about we wait til we actually have a prooduction photo or something to complain about it.
and it's not being called "the karate kid". it's been changed to "the kung-fu kid." having read a little on imdb.com about the story so far, the writers are trying to create enough differances between this and the original that it will not be a straight remake.
everyone has right to hate this movie if they want, but personally, i'm going to wait til until we actually have some production stills or clips before i judge it.

Why? Oh heavens, please call it something other than The Karate Kid. I'd hate to see one of my favorite teen memories wrecked in Hollywood's recycle machine. Re-release the original - or call this Karate Kid 5 (filed under "Sequels That Don't Matter"). What's the next remake of an "old" movie? The Lord Of The Rings? Pathetic, Hollywood. Just pathetic.

I suppose the public has to put up with the films of another child of a celebrity until he learns enough to eventually pass as a C actor.

Well, all you haters, what powerful =white= actor with a child the appropriate age could've green-lit this movie and why didn't he or she?

If Johnny stays white and beats him up is it a hate crime?

Enough with the remakes. Or reboots. Or whatever they are calling this. Just be honest and call this Karate Kid 5.

Finally!!!!! A action adventure movie starring a African American kid!! It's been a long time since the last action movie starring a black child has'nt it ? By the way what was the name of the last movie starring any American minority children ? (No one better say Bebe Kids) I really believe that the Big Willie got it right by attempting to make good quality movies for all people to enjoy . Can't wait to take my kids to see it, that for sure!!!

Oh the outcome will be worse than the idea. Not only will they butcher the whole premise, we'll be told constantly how awesome it is. Once the movie is in release, we'll have to endure interview show after interview show fawning all over this crap. We'll have to witness the kid talking about how great it was to work with Hollywood legend Jackie Chan and how much he learned from him. We'll have to watch interviews with Jackie Chan talking about how awesome it was to work with Jaden, how mature he is for his age and how he has such a promising career ahead of him. We'll have to hear them all constantly talk about how much they admire and revere the original, about how it influenced them, or helped them beat back a bully or some other completely fabricated touching moment. It will be insufferable.

Honestly, I'm afraid this travesty will incur the wrath of Xenu himself, who I'm told is a fan of Ralph Macchio. Is deliberately destroying this great film really worth the destruction of Earth? Somehow I just don't think so.
