Obama Calms Jewish Leaders: Press Has Built Up Conflict

Obama

In an hour-long meeting at the White House on Monday, President Barack Obama assured Jewish leaders that he was demanding as much sacrifice from the Arab world as he was from Israel. He also declared that the media, eager to find a story where there wasn't one, had over-emphasized conflict between the U.S. and Israel in regard to settlement policy.

The mid-afternoon gathering with key leaders from several Jewish-American groups was to address a small but growing concern among pro-Israel advocates that the Obama White House has been overly tough on their side of the peace process equation, especially in demanding an immediate freeze to settlement activity. But according to Ira Forman, head of the National Jewish Democratic Council, the president hit all the right notes during Monday's meeting.

"You could tell in that room that this is a president with great popularity in the Jewish community," Forman, who attended the event, told the Huffington Post. "People obviously asked questions about Israel. But it was a very comfortable audience. I sensed no tension whatsoever."

Obama spoke for no more than 15 minutes, Forman said. And he addressed domestic and foreign policy issues. The primary topic, naturally, was Israel. According to Forman, the president acknowledged that crafting a peace process was incredibly difficult, complicated by a host of political pressures: "I had no sense that he felt we could sit around campfires and sing Kumbayah." At several junctures, Obama emphasized the need to respect the security rights of Israel. He also acknowledged that the Palestinian Authority was in a weak state, and as such is a difficult institution with which to negotiate.

Obama, according to Forman, was not of the mindset that "the P.A. should think it can just sit back and let the U.S. deliver Israel on issues."

"He was very explicit that this was not just Israel's responsibility," said Forman.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of the talk came when Obama discussed the coverage his Israel policies have received domestically. He was not whining, said Forman, because the president understood that it was the "nature of the beast." But he conveyed that the press had "played up a disagreement on the settlements," when the White House had "been at least as demanding on Israel and the Arab world."

The "media"--but, who, really? Be specific...I want to be specific...creates its own headlines that oftentimes have little or nothing to do with reality, e.g., the "tensions" between Obama and Hillary. She just laughs it off. Why? Because it is funny. Why? There is a disconnect. Why? A person with a name created this "story." That's why, in my opinion. But such journalism goes with the territory.

With all due respect, President Obama, crap! It wasn't the press that created the conflict, it was and remains your public bias against Israel. The question remains unanswered: What exactly have you asked the people who call themselves Palestinians and the Arab world at-large to make in terms of concessions to help reach an acceptable agreement to both parties? Absolutely NOTHING of substance. Fly-over rights vs. land for peace. LOL!

Obama is right, emphasis must also be placed on the Palestinian obligation to end their fascist, right-wing, religious fundamentalist incitement against Israel. Israel can give up all of the land in the world, but until Palestinians and the broader Arab world learn to live (and thrive) with Israel as a partner in the Middle East, there will never be a true peace.

"To be Liberal is to be Pro-Palestine"

Now there's a convergence of ideology. Right wingnuts and left wingdings coming together at last under the H8 I*S*R*A*E*L banner. Skin*heads * libs finally admitting there are really one & the same. Believe it or not, I read a post, from a self-described lib that advocated a regional nuclear war between the ant*gon*ists in the region so that "we can finally put this situation behind us". If this is the new face of liberalism, you need to know it's the same face the rad*ical rightwing has been wearing for decades. Smoke that Cigar Man.

When will the POTUS be sitting down with Palestinian Americans to calm them?
07:59 AM on 07/14/2009
there are usually hundreds of ancient and more modern maps of palestine on ebay. i haven't seen one map of 'israel' prior to 1948 that wasn't part of a bible.

who is claiming there was an Israel before 1948?

The fact is that it was NO country - as in: having it's own government and controlling itself. It was simply a land mass controlled or owned by various empires.

so I don't get your point.

You're right. And just for the record, there was no Palestinian state, either--in fact, the word "Palestinian" was invented in the 1960s.

Just wondering when the Palestinian-Americans will be invited to sit down with the President of the United States of America and have their fears calmed?

The President of USA has to provide assurances to a group of people who are pissed off why he's demanding an immediate freeze to settlement activity which is,
1) Illegal by International law
2) Against the principles agreed upon by the Roadmap to peace by both parties

If the jewish leaders are trying to put forth a case that Palestinian violence has not stopped HENCE the building activity should continue then our "supposedly" smart President should be able to point out to them that violence is a result of occupation not vice versa. Its a shame that the President has to do such things in order to maintain his popularity even though he goes around the world giving great speeches about bringing peace to the middle east. But he's Obama..so I guess everything is alright!

Maybe someone should tell them that just because they were repressed does NOT give them a free pass to freely oppress others? You cant be the victim and at the same time blowing the walls of Jericho down with a Howitzer.

Have anyone seen a true victim behave in such a nefarious way?
