Obama

In an hour-long meeting at the White House on Monday, President Barack Obama assured Jewish leaders that he was demanding as much sacrifice from the Arab world as he was from Israel. He also declared that the media, eager to find a story where there wasn't one, had over-emphasized conflict between the U.S. and Israel in regard to settlement policy.

The mid-afternoon gathering with key leaders from several Jewish-American groups was to address a small but growing concern among pro-Israel advocates that the Obama White House has been overly tough on their side of the peace process equation, especially in demanding an immediate freeze to settlement activity. But according to Ira Forman, head of the National Jewish Democratic Council, the president hit all the right notes during Monday's meeting.

"You could tell in that room that this is a president with great popularity in the Jewish community," Forman, who attended the event, told the Huffington Post. "People obviously asked questions about Israel. But it was a very comfortable audience. I sensed no tension whatsoever."

Obama spoke for no more than 15 minutes, Forman said. And he addressed domestic and foreign policy issues. The primary topic, naturally, was Israel. According to Forman, the president acknowledged that crafting a peace process was incredibly difficult, complicated by a host of political pressures: "I had no sense that he felt we could sit around campfires and sing Kumbayah." At several junctures, Obama emphasized the need to respect the security rights of Israel. He also acknowledged that the Palestinian Authority was in a weak state, and as such is a difficult institution with which to negotiate.

Obama, according to Forman, was not of the mindset that "the P.A. should think it can just sit back and let the U.S. deliver Israel on issues."

"He was very explicit that this was not just Israel's responsibility," said Forman.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of the talk came when Obama discussed the coverage his Israel policies have received domestically. He was not whining, said Forman, because the president understood that it was the "nature of the beast." But he conveyed that the press had "played up a disagreement on the settlements," when the White House had "been at least as demanding on Israel and the Arab world."

As Leo Strauss wrote, "The political problem consists in reconciling the requirement of wisdom with the requirement of consent." It may be "wise policy" for Israel to stop settlement, illegal and provocative and in-your-face settlement. But from the point of view of the settlers, the land is sacred, "theirs," and not open to discussion. So, in spite of what "everyone knows" needs to happen for there to be peace, long term peace, it probably ain't gonna happen. Still, I want to see a ray of hope about long term peace in the Middle East before I die.

Did you predict that Obama would not win the election back in 2008? You need not answer this question. However, if you did, then you know how seriously people should take your prediction concerning Obama's re-election prospects.

There is alot that can happen in 3-1/2 years...biggest problems for Obama?

--Economy does not right itself from programs he implemented
--Health care he wants doesn't work out
--He doesn't fulfill promises to get troops out of Iraq...and escalates war in Afghanistan

Those three failures together would be certain one term status for Obama, and even one of them would be a serious dent in his chances...the fact that independent voters, who outnumber Dems and Repubs, are turning away from Obama because of how he is handling the economy is something that his fans need to be acutely aware that their cheerleading will have little if any impact on.

Really not that wishful...if trend of independent voters showing less support for him keeps getting more apparent, his chances are significantly reduced...indies were a key factor in his 2008 win...lose them, and his prospects go sour...Dems will not be enough to get him elected alone...sorry to burst your bubble, but that's just how it is.

How do you know that he doesn't? I am sure he meets regularly with the equally important Arab American Institute. No rush to blame for it defeats the cause of bringing about peace. Let's not look for a fight but rather solutions and compromise all-around on this issues and others.

Well I think he should keep them worried, I'm tired of the jewish lobby leading our politicians around by the nose. They've cost us billions of dollars and lost lives. After Lebanon, I had had enough of Israel's needs they have turned in to bullies and segregationist.

^^ I agree. Not all jews of course, but certainly Zionist hardliners and the "religious right" within Judaism, those who condone settlements, expansionism, etc etc. Part of the reason 9/11 occurred in NYC was in order to strike a blow against what the terrorists considered to be a financial power center of Zionism.

Well, my comment had a long explanation and it all got scrubbed except for the quote from the article.

How can that be?

What is going on with HP scrubbing comments or posting comments which later disappear?

That is a practice HP seems top be getting very prolific at, very arbitrary as well until that tiny country in the ME is the topic, then everything gets scrubbed.

Leave it to the media to try and control government policy. They tell you what is wrong and who is to blame but they cannot and never will give solutions to domestic and world wide problems. Let every columnist and journalist and talk show mouth get into their khakis and go out of America and into the foreign countries and give them some of your brilliant insight and go across the USA and Mexico and Canada and fill them in with your wisdom. Go and don't forget to write.

It is not the press's responsibility to do so...never was...it is their responsibility to hold political leaders accountable for their actions and hold their feet to the fire when they lie, make promises they cannot keep, tell one side one story and the other a different, stringing them both along...it was never the role of the press to come up with solutions to problems...that's what we have leaders for.

Obama must engage with Hamas and do so openly. The Palestinians must unify and stop their power struggle. This is a non-starter until Hamas is at the table and treated as a legitimate voice of its people.
