What's Your Reaction?

MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan, a strong supporter of Sarah Palin, is extremely unhappy with Levi Johnston for his recent criticism of Sarah Palin, including his appearance on the "Today Show" this morning in which he said Palin, at least in part, resigned the governorship of Alaska in order to make more money. Buchanan had some harsh advice for the Palin family on how to deal with Levi:

Well, first, with regard to Levi, I think First Dude up there in Alaska, Todd Palin, ought to take Levi down to the creek and hold his head underwater until the thrashing stops.

The whole "Morning Joe" gang laughed pretty hard at Buchanan's joke, while Mark Halprin helpfully offered, "That's a reality show, right there."

It should be noted, however, that Buchanan hasn't always had such a freewheeling attitude towards comedy directed at public figures. He was one of the harshest critics of David Letterman for his riffs on Sarah Palin and her family.

This is the same boy the Palins trotted out onto the National stage as the "fiancee" of their pregnant daughter, and then they promptly kicked him to the curb when he was no longer needed for photo ops. Karma's a b!tch.

The Palins are going to regret trashing that young man in public.

This is why our family completely abandoned the Republican Party...anytime someone speaks the truth they want to 'forcibly' shut them up if it's anything bad. Thankfully Levi came out and filled us all in on the TRUTH!

Oh come on, you guys! Buchanan's stupid joke was just that, a stupid joke. I dislike Buchanan as much as anyone, but I certainly don't think he was advocating violence! Maybe it's a cultural thing; my Irish-American family and friends all make jokes like that. We say things like, "Clean up this mess or there'll be a murder done!" but nobody takes it seriously. Buchanan is just an old Irish-American guy who hasn't realized that some people are shocked by that kind of talk.

The difference is he is saying it on National TV. He is not sitting around the dining room talking smart with family and friends.

As already noted what we say in our family conclave can be easily seen through the lens of what others in the family know about us. What is said by such as Buchanan goes out over the ether and we all know there are many out there who having little in the way or grey matter take him at his words.

Indeed Buchanan is just an old Irish-American guy and as such he should be muzzled when out in public. Additionally, having watched him these many, many years I do believe he is losing his center. Could be he just is finding it harder to get the face time if he coesn't come up with these ridiculous statements. The latest is his spouting on Sotomayor - he sounds like a book of the first water.

If a Dem said anything like this, even as a so called joke, it would be running on a 24/7 loop on Faux news.
It's about the hypocrisy, do you understand?

I probably like Buchanan more than you do, but I don't cut him slack on this one. You got to realize, this kind of statement is exactly the kind of thing that has us in such a mess over CIA hit squads right now. Right after 9/11, Bush told somebody he wanted Osama bin Laden's head on a pike. Was he joking? Maybe, maybe not. But those are the orders that went out to the people in the field. Likewise, Pat can talk about fathers drowning their disloyal sons on TV and it's a big joke until the first boy gets drowned. And you can bet your bottom dollar there's some Joe-the-Plumber look alike out there who will do it. It's all fun and games until the screaming starts.

Whitequeen, I agree with you. We all say things like this to our own friends and family. But it's different when you're on national TV as some sort of authority and moral compass, and it's very different when Buchanan's the first guy whining when a COMEDIAN makes a joke about Palin's daughter.
Get it?
Do I think he really wants the former Governor's husband to kill his grandson's father? I doubt it. But who the heck knows with these lunatics?!
As usual, the religious are the first ones to resort to violence to enforce their agenda.

So Buchanan advocates the murder of the father of Palin's grandbaby.

What a classy guy, once again

MSNBC should re-consider Buchanan's negative and ineffective contribution to their station. Suggesting the death and murder of someone is unacceptable and should not be allowed.

Actually, Pat makes a very positive contribution to MSNBC. Every time Bill O'Reilly claims MSNBC is all liberal bias all the time, all they have to do is point at Pat Buchanan and scream, "Oh no we ain't!"

The world would be a much better place to live in, if it was Palin's head underwater, not Levi's. All Sarah Palin does it cause trouble wherever she goes, wastes time and money. I think truthfully, she should be committed to a mental institution for anti-social behavior.

I thought that surely, Mr. Buchanan would apologize for his lack of judgment. However, instead of apologizing, he repeated himself on Hardball. I am so upset by this call to violence that I e-mailed Hardball to ask that they remove him from the panel.

Why does the country even know who Levi Johnston is? Because Sarah and Todd paraded him around the country as their squeaky clean son-in-law to be. They've opened the door - now Levi has every right to speak his mind.

Buchanan is right, except for the crude joke. Granted, that's not the first 'this person should die' joke that's gotten media attention recently, eh, Sykes? Feeling hypocritical?

Does half of America really want bigger, more intrusive government? Now, the dumb person would read that statement and assume that I meant half of America voted for Democrats. Actually, 25% voted Republican, 25% voted Democrats, 50% didn't vote. Obama did capture a sizable majority of electoral votes because McCain threw the election: no one who followed the campaign with any understanding of politics could come to a different conclusion. Or did I miss something? The idea of a debate is to argue the strengths and flaws of opposing ideas? Is that still true?

There's no home for a real liberal anymore. So much for our fine past of 'sticking it to the man.' I guess the public University system really does make people dumb. Here, here for my private University breeding.
