DENVER AP – A new airline for pets is taking off with weekly flights to five airports across the country. Beginning July 14, Pet Airways is flying pets to and from Baltimore/Washington International; Midway in Chicago; Rocky Mountain Airport in Broomfield, Colo., near Denver; Hawthorne Municipal Airport near Los Angeles; and Republic Airport on Long Island serving the New York City metro area.

The airline allows cats and dogs to travel in carriers in the main cabin of the plane, rather than the cargo hold. While some airlines allow small animals to fly in the cabin as long as their carriers fit under the seats, Pet Airways has no limit on size.

The carrier will not transport human passengers other than crew and attendants to care for the animals during flights. Pet owners will have to fly separately.

One-way fares start at $149. Many of the flights on the airline's limited initial itinerary are already booked full with a waiting list depending on the animal's size.

To prevent pets from getting sick, there won't be any beverage or snack service.

Well... if there's a market for it, then I guess...

I'm not a fan of pets myself, but I some people are.
Let them pay the extra money if they want.

Why comment if you are grouchy? Personally I am not a fan of downer people. This is a great idea, that's not a guess, the plane is full.

Why do you have to be a downer and add a useless negative comment to his relatively neutral reply? Sounds like you need some time out in the yard.

My two cents - THIS IS MORE WASTING FOSSIL FUELS and contributing to GLOBAL WARMING - airplanes are gigantic pollution machines, and recent studies show that the richest Americans are the biggest polluters. This is more of the same.

Rich People = Doggie Airlines = Pollution

The poodles have never seen the inside of a cargo hold or a kennel.

Last time I flew a animal on a plane actually two was in the 70's when flying was still kind of fun. My kids were old enough to know better and decided to let the cats out of their crates. Needless to say that caused a sensation and the flight attendants were not pleased. But the passengers for the most part appreciated seeing two siamese cats having fun in the aircraft.

This is a good idea for folks able to afford it.....and for the naysayers here I don't think it costs federal, state or local government anything.

There's something intensely perversely awry with our nation.

There's literally enough food, clothing, and shelter to feed, clothe, and house EVERY single person in America ...

... we literally have the supply and demand to help our fellow man and woman (which, according to the Bible, is simply the 'Christian thing to do') ...

but we won't.

Indeed you are right. We must now end this failed economic system for a resource based economy that provides for all of humanity!!!

Ah the wonders of capitalism even in a recession. We can fly our pets, but kids can't get health care.

Excuse me? How is flying pets preventing kids from getting health care? These are totally unrelated issues except for the fact that we should show consideration for all creatures, human or animal.

Wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few...preventing us basic resources such as healthcare. When some spend $5000 on dinner and some don't eat around the corner....there is a great sickness enveloping the land. That is how the two are connected.

I agree.

The US is the wealthiest nation on earth. We should be able to have single payer health care and transport pets in a humane fashion. They needn't be self canceling.

that is awesome! I'm sure I'll be using that airline someday!!!

His name is goliath, he is my yorkie, and he hasn't seen a groomer in a long time as he isn't very fond of them. His power is in his hair, and when he gets it cut he loses some of his mojo.

And you can get amazing and beautiful little dogs like that right at your local animal shelter. They're waiting for you to take them home.

Absolutely, there are thousands, maybe millions of dogs just like him that are waiting for homes at the shelter.

I thought there was a pet friendly airline that came out a few years ago. This is a better option for people who have to relocate than having to put their beloved pets in cargo.

I know Air Canada have changed their policy recently to allow allow animal companions in the cabin but they still have to remain in one of those plastic kennels under the seat. However if they are VIAs ( Very Important Animals) I believe there has been a more relaxed policy for years. I remember reading that the Jack Russell Terrier who played Eddie on Frasier used to ride in great comfort in the cabin.
Anyway, it's about time that these marvelous creatures were treated more humanely and those who disagree should take a flight cross country caged and in the cargo hold.

Cute idea, but why can't the owner travel with the pet? I wouldn't want to put my pet on a plane without being there to make sure it's ok. I imagine dogs especially, could get anxious if their owners aren't nearby.

They should make this a pet-friendly airline, rather than just for pets.

Well, it would only be fair if the owners had to travel in baggage.

But I agree, it would be tremendous fun if there was an airline for pets and their people.

I am so happy about this. Call it trivial if you like, but I would never want to put my dog in a baggage hold. I have been wishing for something like this, but never thought it would happen. I think it's great. Don't like it? Don't use it. My dog is very important to me. This makes more travel (usually for work) options possible for me.

Exactly - and what the naysayer posters don't seem to realize is that there are plenty of horror stories of pets dying of heat exposure during the warmer months of the year while being "handled" by airlines.

My pets are worth more to me than to subject them to even the possibility of being abused or neglected in that way.

And thanks for willingly planning indulgence in this energy wasting activity - we will all have to live with the pollution spewed into the environment so that your doggie can fly around the world in a jet. How exciting!

This "new" service is hardly a stretch for the airlines, they are well practiced at treating their "customers" like animals. I fear the industries next innovation will be to have passengers sit in a cage, drink from buckets, and get snacks from a trough.

No beverage or snack service?! :-O My dog wouldn't like that. Interesting idea though I think I'll wait a year or two before I consider trying it.

Why is it wasteful or arrogant to make sure that a pet travels safely? What about for people and families that have to relocate? I can think of much more wasteful expenditures.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:12 PM on 07/13/2009

Because they have a dedicated airline. No humans, just animals. This is ridiculous when children are starving. Yet, we have the money to pamper our pets and fly them places. Give me a break.
