Sudanese women have been flogged for wearing trousers, according to a local journalist who is also facing the punishment, the BBC reports.

Journalist and UN employee Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein says she is one of 13 women arrested in a restaurant in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, for wearing trousers.

Non-Muslims are supposed to be exempt from Islamic law but Ms Hussein told the BBC that several of the women involved were from the mainly Christian and animist south.

Some of the women pleaded guilty to the charges of 'dressing indecently' and received 10 lashes immediately, but Ms Hussein and others have sought legal advice and are currently awaiting further information on their charges, the BBC reports.

Considering the poverty and instability of life for most people in Sudan, it is really sick that the authorities are wasting state resources enforcing this retrogade and brutal treatment of these women. I wish the very best of luck to Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein and the others who are fighting back against this senselessness.

A mob of backwards and misogynist people using religion to impose their backwards ways on everyone else.

In Iran, Turkey and Indonesia they have 99% Muslim population. Most women cover their heads, and many of these women where trousers and jeans. Just like any religion, it all comes down to interpretation and application by individuals and certain religious communities around the world. Much interpretation is heavily influenced by cultural attitudes more than they are by any real and contextual exegesis of religious scriptures.

My Granddad was a devout old school Church of God Pentecostal Christian, and he admitted that he would think slightly less of a women if she wore trousers. That was because of his understanding and interpretation of some Biblical verse that warns against women dressing like a man. I think there are similar bits of verse within the Koran or Hadiths, and some Muslims wonder whether it means women shouldn't wear trousers.

Since when individuals imposing the Sharia care if the people they are flogging are Muslim or not? Is that a surprise to anyone?

Bet they have dress codes for important jobs too as a way to disqualify women. We make laws governing body and job. What fun. How insecure are these "men"?

How disgusting. So infuriating and absolutely disgusting. Shame on those people, it makes me want to cry. I don't care what religion you are, that is the most outrageously UNGODLY horrible law.

Me. North Africa was colonized and mongrelized by the Persians. They imposed a slave language called Swahili and forced their perverted form of Islam - just like the Europeans imposed Christianity. In actuality, ALL organized religions are just distortions of African spirituality. Indigenous Arabs are b-l-a-c-k Africans. The pale Arabs are NOT the original and are NOT indigenous to the continent. They are Caucasians.

There is nothing in the Qur'an that requires, suggests, or condones harming women (or men) for the way they dress. Fyi.

All it sez is one must be modestly attired both men and women. Tribal and societal custom are the dictates disguised as religion. Seems to me that pants would be less 'sexy' than dresses esp. loose fitting ones.

Yeah but most Christians realized that they had to adapt parts of the Bible because certain things no longer applied. If we still followed the Bible to the letter, we'd be using stone to build temples and oxen to plow fields. John Deere wouldn't exist and no one would know what a computer was. Don't even get me started on medical treatment although some wackos still think prayer will cure cancer.

Yeah, not going to happen. If God didn't want science to cure you, he wouldn't have given you a brain to use.

So, um, it's great to read religious text and all but living it to the letter is a bit stupid especially when you consider that it was written by MEN who more than likely had an agenda.

did you see me defending the bible here, or are you imagining things?
