Christian Bale

E!:

Rather than the beefed-up Bruce Wayne or the Xtreme!!!! John Connor, C.Bale's going full drug addict on us for his new role in David O. Russell's The Fighter. (Oh, can't wait for the rants that will leak from that set.)

Bale plays boxer turned trainer turned drug addict Dickie Eklund, for which he's obviously lost weight and muscle and hollowed up his cheeks--and then there's that lovely thinning hair.

CB is one of those "all in" actors like Daniel Day Lewis. It is surprising that he returned to the biz after the shock of his instant celebrity following Empire of the Sun - which kind of explains his relationship with the press.

For anyone who has not seen them, I urge people to watch Rescue Dawn, The Mechanic, Laurel Canyon, and 3:10 to Yuma.

I hope he works with Hertzog again - they are two of a kind.

I dont care what anybody says - looking nasty as an actor actually hurts your career. Audiences in general aren't sophisticated enough to truly separate actor from character. They think something is actually, physically wrong with YOU. The same happened to Jamie Foxx in the film Ali. People kept coming up to the poor guy during filming breaks saying "Hey man, you allright, you really let yourself go." There are few exceptions to this rule - one was Tom Hanks in Philadelphia - and he was great in that film. But the truth is that people in general don't want to spend 2 hours in the dark theater with a shiite looking protagonist - its just a downer. Hollywood is so image-obsessed that I think actors sometimes feel the need to lash out in the opposite direction, but it does not help them.

This guy better watch it - before he knows it he's going to be playing a superhero in purple tights (a la Ben Affleck who also once had a career) or starring in his own reality TV show in between episodes of The Dog Chapman and Hulk Hogan.

And yet, he's a fairly marginal and one dimensional actor anyway. That insincere Clint Eastwood gruffy voice seems to keep spilling over from role to role. Maybe he deserves to be cast aside to make way for a new handsome lemming waiting to throw HIMSELF off the cliff into obscurity.

Um....hello where have you been? Christian Bale is by far the best Batman EVER. Did you not see "Dark Knight"? I like CB. He's been great in many movies. As far as his method acting, his best so far was in The Mechanic. He was REALLY skinny. Great performance. Loved that movie!

I think you are underestimating the audience that will go see a movie like this. Most people can suspend belief. I would rather have an actor look the part (ie Christian Bale loosing weight and have thin hair not bulked up like in The Dark Knight) for a certain role. There's nothing wrong with character actors and actors who want to put their whole-selves into a role. Johnny Depp does it and he has a great career.

This guy doesn't need to "watch it." He's a great actor and obviously you haven't seen anything he's done but The Dark Knight. Just because you don't like him, doesn't make him a bad actor.

Bale did this once before in a movie called "the Machinist".

It worked out well for him.

as long as he doesn't go all 'Machinist' again, I'm not worried. This must take a toll on his mind though.

He doesn't loook nearly as emaciated and sickly as he did in The Machinist. I was scared to watch that movie because he looked so deathly ill in it. I expected it to be some kind of horror movie or something. Instead, it was a very intense psychological drama that pretty much blew me away. I've always said this guy can do anything. I'd like to see him step away from action hero parts more often to do these kinds of films.

And for everyone who's cracking on him, it's not like he's the first actor to ever do this. Come on! Even Tom Hanks has noodled around with his weight for roles.

I agree. He's an intense actor and throws himself into the part he's playing. Other actors have done the same for a role.

Again? Isn't this the third role he has done this for? This has to be harmful to his long term health. Wish him the best though.

Bale is a great actor but sometimes I think he gets too intense! Way too intense!
