This is GREAT news; however, as with all these breakthrough drugs, I just wish they'd be closer to release to be used before lifting the hopes of people for whom they would benefit.
The problem is that we're so far physiologically from mice that it'll take some time. The alternative is to be more lax in releasing drugs and then dealing with the consequences of a larger percentage of them having dangerous, often lethal, side effects in a larger percentage of the population.
This is interesting news becuase it suggests that memory is not lost but rather, the ability to access that memory is lost.
.
is hard to read "recovery of lost memory" into the results stated in the article. It is entirely unclear from this article whether the trial mice had already developed evidence of advanced disease, and recovered function after being given the drug, or whether the drug was given before the disease developed, and prevented the mouse disease syndrome from occuring in these genetically predisposed mice.

This is interesting news. That a new tact towards treatment has been taken is good news. I'm particularly glad to see that a drug aimed at inflammation has proven effective. The idea that something is causing tangled and plaque coated neurons to die off sounds like the result of inflammation rather than the disease itself.
About 6 months ago there was similar news out of the UC system in which a drug designed for arthritis inflammation was injected spinally while the patient was postioned with their heads lower than their bodies so that the compound would work it's way to the brain. It seemed to offer some dramatic benefits. I wonder if this is a continuation of that line of investigation.
Keep us posted and in the mean time, for those of you who are looking after those who suffer from dementia of any type, I salute you.
As someone who's Grandmother died after suffering through this, I breath a huge sigh of relief, knowing there are huge steps happening towards a cure for this. After seeing my Grandmother go through it, I'd rather put a gun in my mouth than have to have my mind slowly erased, forget my loved ones, myself and just slowly slip away into nothingness. Anything that can help prevent, or cure that is totally worth every dime spent on research.
For you, Avanti2, and any others with the same experience, there is another option to simply watching the decline of a loved one. This drug report is helpful, hopeful...
After taking care of my Mom for 4 1/2 years with advancing Dementia / Alzheimer's, any development in the drug department is welcome. Currently there is only one drug, Aracipt, that is recognized to slow the advancement of Alzheimer's. It costs over $100 per month and in my Mom's case, proved rather ineffective. We need more treatment options so any progress in the medication area is very welcome.
Cannabinoid's Also work to allow the retention of memory in patients afflicted from this disease.
Excellent news. Let's hope it works as well in humans.
Alas, that would be typical. But maybe many years from now the clues offered by the experiment prove valuable.
