I Like ItI Don’t Like It

A 28-year-old woman, Summer Nelson, has been arrested for having sex with a 14-year-old boy who she was babysitting. Nelson claimed to be in love with the teen, and told his siblings that she was "in love" with their brother. She even went so far as to ask the boy's mother for her blessing so they could be "together as a couple."

According to KXLY.com, Sergeant Dave Beck, a detective with the Post Falls Police Department, said,

She'd be holding his hand, she'd have her hands on his side, when they'd sit together she'd have her hand on his knee, they'd sneak away together and she'd put her sole attention on the oldest child, this boy.

Women who do this are obviously as unstable as men who do. Society, though, has a lot to answer for, too, since it seems that it endorses the 'forever young" meme in which people who are adults age-wise but act like teenagers are getting to be the norm. No, 30 is NOT 15, no matter how you slice it.

Grow up, America, we'll all be better off if you do.

I am 24 and I am just starting to be able to find men my own age attractive. They are just now starting to get over the whole frat boy, act-like-I-have-no-brains, idocracy.

When I was a teen I didn't even find other teen boys attractive. This woman is seriously messed up to think that she is in love with a pubescent teen.

Well as a young boy I remember feeling the same way about my female schoolmates. I couldn't stand their behaviours so I always fantasized about an older women. two way street - there are some mature, or seemingly mature, young men out there.

Yeah, young women don't act stupid at all. Do they?

No only do young people act stupid...compared to adults, they are stupid (generally speaking). And that's okay, they are allowed to be stupid and silly, that's what childhood is all about.

And I was never attracted to most girls my own age during my teens and early 20s because they were too self-absorbed, emotionally immature, indecisive, and generally unable to express themselves with confidence and positivity towards males.

Why are some of the men here getting somewhat defensive? You are not 14-years-old any longer, correct?

For the record, I think most teen girls act pretty silly too. And few people in our society are very aware of themselves until they are 21+ years old. All the more reason for adults to engage in relationships with other adults instead of pubescents.

Lucky SOB.... As a guy, I have trouble seeing the problem with this. This is a 14 year old boys dream come true. But when I think of it the other way around, a 28 year old guy with a 14 year old girl doesn't sound so good. Yes, I know there's a double standard.

Is it just me or does this sort of thing (very attractive older woman/teen boy) seem to be happening more often?

She needs to receive the same punishment that an adult man would receive for raping a teenaged girl. It's not cute, it's abuse.

And I'm even willing to bet that there are plenty of 14 year old girls who would quite willingly and unregrettably have sex with their dream boat 28 year old swim coach but we'll always consider this abuse because we as a society still treat women as weak-willed and delicate and these 14 year old girls would be shamed into regretting the sex by society as opposed to the boy who will congratulated from every corner of his peer group. I'm not saying all sex with minors is perfectly acceptable as it is indeed very possible to take advantage of a younger more impressionable person but I'm willing to bet more young women would be okay with the act than we are ready to believe.

"we as a society still treat women as weak-willed"

Only relatively recently.

"The statute book of Massachusetts makes ten years the age at which a female child is supposed to have discretion enough to part with virtue."

Yep, this is a strange world. The British want their kids to have an orgasm a day, America wants their kids to stifle it. Sex laws are different in different parts of the world.

I would think the 14 year old could now babysit for the parent.

At any rate, LIFE IN PRISON sounds much too harsh a penalty to me.

I am shocked and outraged by the total lack of morals and decay represented by this woman's actions. I waited till I was 16 to sleep with my babysitter.

wow. the comments here are quite emotionally charged. rather lacking in rationality though. the way i see it:

1. the woman IS an adult, and should know better than to have sex with a minor. she should be held accountable.

2.the boy must be questioned to determine if he was a willing participant. this should affect the severity of charges against the adult.

3. yes, of course there is a double standard. that is because many boys at age 14 would consider this situation a very fortunate circumstance. (my first crush was on my babysitter.)

4. the woman clearly needs psych assistance if she feels she is in love with a teen boy. she may very well have feelings for the boy, but a rational adult would overcome those feelings with a proper sense of morality.

I agree.
To Acleacius above: If she was truly in love with the boy she should wait until he is 18 to do anything. It's not about who she can love its about emotional maturity and the statutory rape law.

1. dead on right...nonetheless something we shouldn't feel good about doing to what may well have been a happy couple

2. again, you're right...but it usually has no effect on the charges leveled in such cases because of pandering over law-and-order issues

3. sure, can't say I recall any such crushes, and I've tried to stay out of this end of the discussion because I feel it doesn't matter

4. Unless and until competent assessment finds evidence of a problem, there's no need for assistance. Under any other circumstances it would be coerced and possibly counterproductive, like sending a 1st offender DUI to months of mandatory AA meetings.

Furthermore, you tie morality and rationality together with a rather repressive view of how to deal with one's feelings. Those who might say, "Fine but she should wait until he's 18" have a similar problem. You all neglect the validity of feelings. They are not beasts to be overcome, but part of human reality. I believe the most moral and rational course was what she took, raising the issue with his parents. I don't expect many parents to reach the outcome she would prefer, but it is legally and reasonably within their purview. After they turn down her request, then she should be overcoming her feelings -- loss, rejection, anger -- but away from the family and after breaking it off with the boy in a mature way.
