A 28-year-old woman, Summer Nelson, has been arrested for having sex with a 14-year-old boy who she was babysitting. Nelson claimed to be in love with the teen, and told his siblings that she was "in love" with their brother. She even went so far as to ask the boy's mother for her blessing so they could be "together as a couple."

According to KXLY.com, Sergeant Dave Beck, a detective with the Post Falls Police Department, said,

She'd be holding his hand, she'd have her hands on his side, when they'd sit together she'd have her hand on his knee, they'd sneak away together and she'd put her sole attention on the oldest child, this boy.

My question would be how sexually active was the 14 year old before the 28 year old came to babysit? This doesn't mitigate her actions but it might explain the socio-sexual behavior of our young ones. Her desire to be a couple with him seems out of kilter. But there are some precocious teens out there who know how to pleasure themselves sexually.

There is something wrong with a 28 year old "woman" that prefers a 14 yr old "boy" over a grown man.

exactly.....i think back to when i was "in love" at 15 and it was a very immature innocent love, not the same kind of love you have when you're an adult and have had a few experiences under your belt.

a 14 year old boy cannot meet the needs of a 28 yr and I don't just mean se xu ally.

i don't know what this woman is after but it's definitely not healthy on her part

I don't know about that. I think it's perfectly possible for both the woman and the boy to understand and acknowledge the differences in maturity level and still have a healthy relationship.

If you really look, you'll find plenty of cases of older women giving young men just through puberty their sexual initiation, and it working out quite well for all involved. I distinctly remember Richard Pryor's account of how it went down that way for him.

28 year old man has sex with a 14 year old girl.
28 year old man has sex with a 14 year old boy.
28 year old woman has sex with a 14 year old boy.
28 year old woman has sex with a 14 year old girl.

In all scenarios above, there is an ADULT [supposedly], having sexual relations with a MINOR.

To my recollection, in the eyes of the law, this is still a crime -- isn't it..? [SEX WITH A MINOR can result in a variety of charges including statutory rape, molestation, sexual assault, etc.]

"Under the law, "child sexual abuse" is an umbrella term describing criminal and civil offenses in which an adult engages in sexual activity with a minor or exploits a minor for the purpose of sexual gratification. The American Psychiatric Association states that "children cannot consent to sexual activity with adults", and condemns any such action by an adult: "An adult who engages in sexual activity with a child is performing a criminal and immoral act which never can be considered normal or socially acceptable behavior." -- Wiki entry

Why are people making justifications for, and/or having a blase attitude to, the action(s) of this adult..? If she broke the law, she should be penalized accordingly. There should be NO special considerations [or high fives!] because of her sex..!

Prove to me that all "children" mature at the same rate, and I'll consider your point. What exactly does "cannot consent" mean? Minors consent to sex with minors all the time. With that definition, no one under 18 can agree to have sex with anyone over 18. 17 years 11 months 29 days cannot consent to sex with 18 years one day. Not very realistic.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:19 AM on 07/15/2009

It's a gray area, that's why the age of consent law errs on the side of being 'too old', to protect the kids that mature more slowly. The law puts the burden on the adult, who is old enough to know better and should be the one to exercise self-restraint.
Most states have an age of consent of 16, a few have 17, and the rest have 18. It's really not unreasonable.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:39 AM on 07/15/2009

Not very realistic maybe, but that is the law in most states. Each state has its own "age of consent" laws but this kid was 14. In Idaho it is illegal to have sex with a child under the age of 16 (and 16 or 17 if you are more than 4 years older than them) and so she will prosecuted for it. If you have an problem with those laws that is fine, you can argue all you want that they are not realistic, but they are still there and should be enforced equally.

I have hear over and over (from my mom, my ants, teachers, and the media) that girl mature faster than boy.By that logic, it should be less of an issue if a man has sex with a 14 or 15yrs girl than a women having sex with the same since that girl would on average be more mature. Again, event when consent is given to a man by a minor, the law and society is still not on his side.

I lost my virginity at 14 to a woman more than twice my age. That was over 40 years ago and I still treasure that experience. What's 'perverted' in this story is not anything this poor woman has done, but rather the way she is being treated.

I completely agree. The only reason there's any "controversy" at all is because the victim is a male and the predator is a female. And yes, I used the words victim and predator specifically. A 14 year old can be easily manipulated by a 28 year old and when you throw sex into the mix that's multiplied. Even if he was the aggressor, she should have known to say no.

The fact is there is a certain segment of the population that fantasizes about and desires sex with kids. There is something appealing to these people about deflowering a youth. This is predatory behavior and it appears from the many news stories about it that this behavior isn't gender specific; both men and women can be predators.

When I was 16, I lost my virginity to a 30 year old man. I regret it now, but it was my choice at the time and I don't feel tramatized. Teenagers do lots of irresponsible things, like drinking, smoking, drugs and sex. Personally, I think that if it's illegal for a teen smoke and drink, then it should be illegal for a teen to have sex with adults.

Folks, keep an eye on this "trial". She will get a slap on the wrist and will be out of jail in few years. If a 28 year old man had been involved with a 14 year old girl, he would have been sent to jail for life.

There are two sets of rules for men and women in this kinda situation. Just look at the previous cases in which women had sex with underage boys.

Anyone involved in this kind of shameful and harmful act should be treated harshly. Law should be same for everyone !

Something about these teachers and their students. Now the babysitters have to be added to the list of child predators.

With some 14-year-olds, this would be very harmful, but with others, not.

In quite a few states, marriage at age 14 is allowed, with parental and in some cases, judicial consent.

In most states, marriage at age 16 is allowed, with parental consent.

http://www.coolnurse.com/marriage_laws.htm

So, isn't it a bit much to send this girl to jail? If they love each other, let them marry.

No, I wouldn't. But the fact is they're not reversed. Sex is a thing that is not equal. A 28-yo woman being involved with a 14-yo man (or, if you want, "child" - but in many ways puberty is manhood) is not the same as the reverse.

I do not understand why this is a crime. At 14, every single red blooded boy is hoping and praying for sex with lots of masterbation as the sole alternative. This is not damaging to him in the least when his prayers are answered. It's part of growing up into a man. Damn, This kid is not a victim but a hero and she should not face any criminal charges but rather given praise and commendation for introducing a loving sex relationship to this boy so he could mature faster. We need lots more of this b/c this puritan society needs to break the chains of sexual repression once and for all.

Probably depends on several factors. Were there multiple victims, was force or violence used, was it a member of his family (incest tends to get lighter sentences), etc. Read more here if you're really interested.

just because every 14 year old boy wants to have sex, doesn't make it right for a fully grown woman to have sex with children. Parents have a right too you know. And this boy is still just that a "boy". The state considers a 14 year old a child and rightfully so, they have just begun to develop and go through puberty. And for all you sick people defending this woman by saying it's different for 14 year old girls, well actually girls develop faster than boys so your arguments hold no weight. It's not right for an adult to sleep with any child, girl or boy. End of story.

WellTickleMeWillie, would you feel the same if this story was about your 14 year daughter and a 28 year old man?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:45 AM on 07/15/2009

That's just plain stupid to equate the two. For Christ sake, 14 yr old boys are looking to have sex with 14 yr old girls and anyone else they can get it from. And in fact, they do and alot. That's technically a crime but it goes on alot. So would i feel the same if this story was about 14 yr old boys and girls having sex. Yes, b/c, a teen could become pregnant with all the negatives that entail. But a 28 yr old woman becoming pregnant is no big deal. She can take care of herself and give the boy some early and desparately needed sex education at the same time. Hoorah for both of these people.

Puritans be gone, now.

So, I'm just curious about your opinions: should female sex offenders be judged by different standards because they allegedly don't "damage" their victims as much, if at all?

i posted a related comment earlier, which apparently got scrubbed by the censorship gods. if the situation were reversed (28 y-o male, 14 y-o girl), the adult would be deemed a monster by most of the posters here. somehow, this woman is not perceived as a danger, even to a child half her age. what does this say about our culture? in my later teen years, i dated a significantly older man (by more than a decade). i don't feel scarred by the experience. in fact. i was left more confused and distraught by trying to deal with the boys my own age. in my twenties, i had a brief fling with a guy in his teens. i don't see either event as psychologically damaging to anyone involved. 14 is a little young to be having sex (with ANYONE), but many 14 year-olds today are experimenting sexually with each other, in dangerous and uninformed ways, with far greater potential for life-long damage to psyche and self.

Interesting. I'm female and have only ever dated men relatively close to my age, so I don't have much of an opinion on it. If I had to make a call, I'd have to say that each case should be judged individually.

I have an ex that I dumped because he was too controlling and turned out to be rather warped sexually. He started dating a 19 year-old, which really made me cringe because of the potential damage he could inflict on a young person (he was about 35 at the time.) I've also seen relationships where there's a 20 year difference in age that seemed quite healthy.

My first encounter was at fourteen with a forty year old woman. Probably one of the best things that happened to me at that age. I was taught about women, and their needs, which later on life proved to be very beneficial. I think each case has to be judged on its own merits, especially concerning young men, and not destroying a person for such an encounter.
