Costas Interviews President Obama
Before President Obama stepped on the pitcher's mound at Busch Stadium to throw out the 2009 All Star Game's first pitch, he took a moment to talk with Bob Costas of the MLB Network. In their 14-minute pre-game interview, Costas spoke with the president about his life as a baseball fan and asked the president about his favorite players and teams growing up.
The president said that his earliest baseball memory was going to Hawaii Islanders games in his childhood. The Islanders were a minor league team in the Pacific Coast League that have been affiliated with numerous major league teams and boast alumni such as Tony Gwynn and Barry Bonds. The first major league game President Obama went to was a Kansas City Royals game in the early 1970s, although the president admitted that he could not remember any players from that team.
Costas then lightheartedly asked the president if he had been in the stands during the infamous Disco Demolition Night in Chicago, to which he responded:
