Us has obtained video of the 1984 Pepsi commercial shoot with Michael Jackson that had a tragic pyrotechnic accident, resulting in Jackson's head catching on fire.

The burns and hair loss associated with the accident have been cited as the beginning of Jackson's painkiller addiction.

The video below shows two takes - in the first the explosion goes off as planned, after Jackson is out of the way. In the sixth the explosion goes off too early, while Jackson is standing right there.

Jackson's head is engulfed in flames, which he at first does not realize as he continues performing. Handlers then rush out to put out the flames.

May his sweet soul finally be at peace - there is no more pain. Let's remember him smiling and dancing.

Michael made very generous contributions to humanitarian causes through out his life. That speaks volumes to me about who he really was. A giving and caring heart, greatly misunderstood, but ultimately only trying to help others.

May he always be smiling now. May his eyes light up with joy.

Rest in Peace

I remember that HBO showed the footage in a preview of Michael's concert in 1993. It was sad when it happened, sad watching it in 1993 and sad watching it now.

To clarify, HBO didn't show this particular bit of footage, but footage of Michael coming down the stairs from the front and you could clearly see his hair on fire.

What a horrifying incident. It's easy to imagine how something like this could forever change the course of one's life. I thought I read once that all of the footage of the accident was destroyed, but obviously that turned out not to be the case. I wonder how it became leaked / released? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F166o1QO6Y8

This is tough to watch and remember.

This happened right when the "Thriller" craze that settled down. Having come down from that type of success, plus this horrific incident and access to painkillers, makes it fairly easy to see how Michael could get caught up in a downward spiral.

From 1984 on, Michael Jackson's goal was to top "Thriller," which to this day remains the biggest selling album of all time. Just imagine having "peaked" at the ripe old age of 24/25. Sure, you can say, well why did "Thriller" need to be topped? Well, it didn't. But that is how Michael measured success and perhaps his self esteem was tied to success.

Keep in mind, by the time of this incident, Michael had ALREADY HAD ROUGHLY 3 NOSE JOBS. Which also means he was already exposed to anesthesia. This incident just exhilarated him on a road he was already on. A road of self-destruction.

Michael Jackson had dozens of successes after Thriller. Nothing is ever going to top Thriller's record sales, ever.

This is tough to watch and remember. They never showed the entire clip, so I never knew how bad it was. I just remember seeing photos of him with his hair on fire and crying at school because some kids said he might die.

My tears are getting in the way I meant to say.
It amazes me even more that Michael Jackson would
continue on and sing, dance, smile, and write
beautiful music like: "Fly Away" and this
lovely melody: "Speechess":

He broke his nose in the 70's while performing with the Jackson 5.
That is when his nose surgeries started.
