How can Americans take back control of our government?

Presidents come and go, but Congress is forever, and that is the heart of the problem.

Inside this “heart” is the “professional politician”, who gets reelected 95% of the time, and who lives only to get reelected forever, regardless of the needs of the country and its apathetic citizens.

The answer lies in a “Citizen Congress”, IMPOSED by voters who NEVER REELECT ANYONE in Congress, thereby creating a one-term Congress, without the need for a constitutional amendment.

Don’t tell me that Congress needs ‘experience’! Our country was built on inexperience! A Congress of freshmen who can’t take reelection for granted would be a trove of creative new ideas, mostly small government ideas.

50% of Americans never vote, mostly because they hate politics and politicians, and 95% of these non-voters would vote for challengers only. They could sweep the field! How can we mobilize these non-voters to vote against incumbents? Remember, it makes no difference who they vote for, as long as it is never for any incumbent!

Americans must stop voting for party, for issues, for familiar names. They must vote to take back their country!

NEVER REELECT ANYONE IN CONGRESS
America would be changed forever, and immediately!

We can talk about more than one term AFTER we throw all the bums out, and have a one-term Congress

Unfortunately bribing politicians in America is legal and an accepted practice. It's best defined as legal and open corruption and accounts for the mess the country is currently enjoying.

That's it in a nutshell. It makes real and necessary political change very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. They are the defenders and promoters of the "status quo". And they are controlling the agenda by controlling those who create the legislative agenda. How can our country possibly change course and adapt to a changing set of conditions if our system of government has been so thoroughly corrupted, legal or otherwise? The answer is, we can't.

Chris Dodd has the smear of the mortgage crisis all over him. His wife's releationship with AIG and the bonuses, Chris was all supportive. Chris and his "special friendship" with Countrywide, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Obama wanted to hire Tom Daschle, lobbyist for the health industry.

And of course the progressive will igonore all this to throw stones at the republicans.

No honesty here!

In order to maintain your belief that progressives ignore any criticism of democrats, it is imperative that you ignore any criticism of Dodd by progressives in the comments section of this article.

This, of course, should not be a surprise to anyone. The Republican Party openly embraces special interests. They are the party of special interests. Their singular attention is devoted to the top 2% in the economic hierarchy. Everyone else is of secondary importance. They feed at the private trough. Everything that they do and say reflects that. Even their Supreme Court appointments seem to consistently rule in favor of the corporations over the little guy. So, if you want to vote for a party that ignores average Americans, preferring instead to bend over backwards to those who are corrupting our system of government -- the lobbyists and special interests -- turning it into some sort of a corporatocracy where the few and the powerful dictate the agenda and the outcome of that agenda, then go ahead. But don't complain when your world continues to be torn apart by globalization and outsourcing and health care is out of reach.

The republicans love America, but they love their lobbyist a little more. Sorry America!

Exactly. Which is why they need to be voted out of office.

Term limits: two for the Senate; or twelve years, and five for the congress; or ten years. And that is it. But then they go work for the lobby interest. sigh!

The only time we hear of "term limits" is when the Republicans are in the minority. But it wasn't that long ago that they became the majority for a good span of time and, all of a sudden, all of their talk about "term limits" disappeared. Hypocrites.

frappe-
We actually do have term limits. Ignorant voters are the ones who keep unethical people in congress. Take a look at our career politicians, it is the voters who have kept them there. Come 2010 we better wake up and start cleaning house. We have the power to enact term limits.

In order to hurt the country with suffocating hidden policies dressed with the constitution.

It's funny how misused and corrupted our constitution is.

Yes, the right to petition is written into our Constitution. But does it also include the promise of large political contributions and the promise of a six or seven figure income as a lobbyist upon conclusion of said representative's political career in Congress providing said representative promotes the agenda of the lobbyist(s) in question?

Dodd has accepted more money from Financial Sector lobbyists than any other politician in any election cycle he was in (except his first) besides Obama. Excuse me if I don't take his bashing at face value. So far, according to 538, his one million dollar war chest for next election is composed of donations from exactly 4 people from Connecticut. Good job representing your state.

This from tokenconservative is true and easily verified. Of course there are those, see above, who refuse to verify or believe anything that opposes their preconcieved opinion.

Chris Dodd bashing lobbyists...ROFL! Mr. "Friends of Angelo", the Countrywide VIP himself!

The National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee (NRSC) sent this message to lobbyists:

"For what it is worth, we believe you are doing your job, a job that is very much a part of the democratic process; to make sure Congress understands how proposed policy will affect their constituents, business and other interests around our country. I guess Chris Dodd just wants your financial support but not your company."

I.E. Despite what we say about "special interests" we are happy to take you money and introduce your policies and arrange for pork. Just make sure to write that check, though.

I thought it was a Congressman's JOB to find out how legislation affected their constituents...not the lobbyists? Maybe if they spent more time speaking to average people in their districts, rather than sucking the teat of lobbyists they'd be able to do the job that they were elected to do.
