What's Your Reaction?
Ratigan

On Thursday morning's episode of MSNBC's "Morning Meeting", host Dylan Ratigan and Contessa Brewer discussed President Obama's much-talked-about first pitch at Tuesday night's Major League Baseball All Star Game.

"A lot of people, Rush Limbaugh included, seem to think that the President throws like a girl," Brewer said.

Saying that she found nothing wrong with the pitch, Brewer then turned the tables on commentators like Limbaugh and St. Louis conservative Mark Reardon, asking "what are you saying about the way girls throw? Have you seen a girl throw?"

"No, girls don't throw that well, generally speaking," Ratigan said.

After a brief awkward silence and some incredulous sighs, Brewer exited off-camera.

"It's true though," Ratigan stammered. "The truth sometimes hurts."

The show then went to commercial, with a somewhat baffled Ratigan saying he would use the break to "try to reconcile with Contessa." Brewer could be heard off-camera saying something about "beat[ing Ratigan] up."

I wish a man, perhaps Josh Beckett, would throw a fastball right into Contessa's face, what do you think of that?

Some people just can't throw. They didn't grow up throwing balls and don't throw balls as adults. Big deal. Lots of those people are women but some men as well.

Dylan,

I Dare you to try to catch any (female) High School Fast Pitch (Soft Ball) without a Mask or Cup.

This guy is the worst show on MSNBC, including the prison documentaries. Giving rattigan a show instead of Larry O. is a travesty. And 2 whole hours? It's simply awful.

That's a fact. It's just a fact of socialization that most girls don't spend a whole lot of time practicing or playing throwing balls growing up and so women are generally not great at throwing balls. Boys generally do, so they are better at it as men. There's nothing remotely controversial about his statement. Equal doesn't necessarily mean same.

That man said all girls. Then when he saw Contessa was steamed. He doubled down on his absurdity.

Read the article. He said "generally speaking" not all girls as you claim. And it's true.

"throw like a girl"

Everyone on this board is assuming a lot. Maybe by "throw like a girl", all he meant was, underhand and at 70 mph.

He said , "No, girls don't throw that well, generally speaking."

Of course college softball pitchers and the other players I might add can throw a ball.

Now tell me what percentage of women/girls in this country have spent time playing high level softball. Generally speaking that is........

Ratigan, have you seen girls softball? They could throw one between your eyes!

Contessa could whoop your ass, Dylan. Tread carefully.

I see a lot of people asking this. The PROBLEM is the generalization of "all girls", by saying "girls". That was clearly his intent as well, to make a statement about half of the world's population.

MSNBC has no room for such a high school jock mentality. I thought he was more enlightened than that. I will avoid any future shows.

This is why, in spite of believing strongly in progressive or democratic policies, I will never allow myself to be lumped in with liberals.

You are boycotting then? Cuz he said girls don't throw the ball as well as men...generally speaking.

So, because he pointed out a fact, that while true, you don't like...and now you won't watch....

Political correctness is not more important than reality, sorry...

Now I see why I don't watch his show and why did MSNBC give this dude his own program? Ratigan's temperament lies in the gutter of bile. He owes Brewer and apology.

I've played Division 1 collegiate softball and have coached many girls in softball/baseball. They can throw the ball the same or better than most boys if they are simply taught how to throw a ball. Girls are usually taller and stronger than their male counterparts at a pre-teen age so they do a much better job. Some girls remain stronger/taller than boys in the teen stage and do well if they have a competitive league and a good coach. What often happens is that girls are coached by fathers or other men that are not that good in the sport and do not expect much from a girl due to that built-in myth that girls are not as good as boys in sports. There is nothing wrong with fathers/other men volunteering to coach, but it would be great if they would bring a female counterpart to coach who knows the game and the potential of girl athletes.

I'm sure some a lot of women playing softball can pitch better than me, but I'm not athletic. I'm pretty sure a male college baseball pitcher could through better than a female softball pitcher. I don't know why anyone would realistically get offended by that. Men just are built to be stronger than women, it's not sexist, it's just nature.

Since your nont athletic, I guess you haven't seen female softball pitchers consistently strike out pro-baseball players. It is sexist. Even non-athletic males are inclined to provide comments on something they don't know much about and chaulk it up to nature. Let's see.....I guess Larry Summers was correct in opining that women aren't as smart as men in math and science....another nature thing. Or could it be that men just have more opportunity in Sports and in the job markets for math and science. Maybe its not nature, maybe its man made.

The women also throw from a mound nearly 20 feet closer to the plate. A woman pitching to a pro baseball player on an actual baseball diamond would get to see the pitch sail out of the park time after time.

Umm...boys throw better than girls.

Anyone who has been to a little league complex can see that.

Except the girls who are better than most boys. You cannot navigate the world only through labels like these. It doesn't work.

Most people cannot throw a baseball well under any circumstances, let alone in front of an excited crowd with the cameras of the country on you.

And if we hired him as a short reliever, that would be a problem. He's the President; his throwing ability isn't the tiniest bit important.

I object to the "like a girl" thing. Throws like a girl, screams like a girl, cries like a girl. All used in a pejorative sense. The casual denegration of females that so often goes unnoticed.

Were it 'throws like a Jew', 'cries like a Black', 'screams like an Hispanic', it would be recognized for the prejudice it is. But when it's 'like a girl'....we get pages of people discussing the difference in athleticism in the sexes....as if that's the point. (shakes head, sighs heavily)

Give me a break - Have you ever seen most girls throw a baseball? They can't really do it well. It is a fact of life.

Here's your break: I've not only seen girls throw baseball, but boys. Most PEOPLE can't really do it well. That's a fact.

Your throw, for example, just missed the point by about two zip codes.

Your point is well taken. It really is a double-edged "insult", and the discussions of athleticism are utterly besides the point.

As someone who has played Baseball, most females do not throw as well. Yes the women who play softball are incredible and do throw fast but if you ever tried to hit a baseball coming at you at 90 miles per hour and have to decide if the ball is a fastball, curve, screwball, etc., you understand. There is also a difference in the fields due to the arms, speed and athleticism of male ballplayers.
HOWEVER there are plenty of things women to better than men!
