Ratigan

On Thursday morning's episode of MSNBC's "Morning Meeting", host Dylan Ratigan and Contessa Brewer discussed President Obama's much-talked-about first pitch at Tuesday night's Major League Baseball All Star Game.

"A lot of people, Rush Limbaugh included, seem to think that the President throws like a girl," Brewer said.

Saying that she found nothing wrong with the pitch, Brewer then turned the tables on commentators like Limbaugh and St. Louis conservative Mark Reardon, asking "what are you saying about the way girls throw? Have you seen a girl throw?"

"No, girls don't throw that well, generally speaking," Ratigan said.

After a brief awkward silence and some incredulous sighs, Brewer exited off-camera.

"It's true though," Ratigan stammered. "The truth sometimes hurts."

The show then went to commercial, with a somewhat baffled Ratigan saying he would use the break to "try to reconcile with Contessa." Brewer could be heard off-camera saying something about "beat[ing Ratigan] up."

I have never been able to throw a ball as well as a man and I've just never cared.

That said, I've never had a man out talk me and that has served me very well my entire life.

(come on guys I just know you have to whine about that)

Michelle Obama can throw better than POTUS. That's the first and last first pitch you'll see him try. Very embarrassing.

I don't watch him or that Dr. Judy; why? They are awful! RETHUGS will make negatives statements no matter what President Obama does. The pitch was great; the ball went across the plate. In the booth he was funny and engaging. I love our President because he is a real person and not a clone/imitation of a person. Rethugs are hater because he is so personable, charming, and human!

Dr. Judy is a health-industrial complex shill. or maybe worse -- a secret lobbyist.

I am no fan of Ratigan/Brewster (but of MSNBC); i think it was in poor taste for her to walk off the set while having (debating) a conversation ON AIR. i think he was embarrassed as well as caught off guard.

He was meant to be embarrassed, she mocked him right back for his outrageous comment.

forget his stupid comments. on to more important issues.

Dylan is a loud mouth and not very likable. His voice grates on my nerves, I have a hard time listening to him while on the computer. He continues to have on the offensive spitzer which does not help. Everytime I look at spitzer, my stomach turns.

Why do girls throw underhanded at softball if they can throw just as well as guys?

I used to play industrial league softball (men's softball is pitched underhand also, by the way) and we thought we were pretty hot stuff. Undefeated after the first eight games of the season when one of the guys told us that his sister was coming for a visit. She pitched for the Atlanta Tomboys and I was thrilled that I was one of the only guys to get a bat on the ball...foul tip. She not only threw the ball faster than any baseball I had seen in high school or American League baseball, but the damn thing dove, rose and whistled as it crossed the plate. Anybody who thinks that girls can't throw a softball is an idiot.

Because the balls are different. Baseballs are more compact and hard, while you have softer, larger balls in softball. You can't get the same speed and accuracy if you throw the same way in both sports.

Softballs are most defenitly not soft, they damn HURT.

Softball originally started as a 'softer' version of baseball (to be played in the winter indoors), but it no longer a soft game. Go face any fastpitch windmill pitcher, you would piss your pants.

Its only America where men's fastpitch softball isn't popular. Go and find some videos of men playing at the elite level, they're brilliant. Softball is a much faster, skilled game than baseball. Its pure reflex, where you have slightly more time in baseball. (seconds, but still) Go ask any of the baseball players who have tried to face Jenny Finch if they think she's not as good as their pitchers. Most of them couldn't hit her. Traditionally its much easier for softballers to switch to baseball than it is the other way round (and that is purely because of the rise ball. Softballers face drops, basballers get completly screwed by a rise ball)

This show is Morning Joe continued and Brewer is simply emulating Mika--just what we need, another female assistant to the male host--MSNBC needs to realize that we are in the 21st century. Ratigan is just another pretty face, another one of those ubiquitous victimized white males we all hear about who should be anchoring my local news. Unfortunately, several of MSNBC's daytime personalities are working too hard to gain a following by saying outrageous things and pushing personal opinion. Can't we just have real news every once in a while?

Brewer was added to soften the effect of Ratigan because, by himself, the guy is almost unwatchable.

Plus, doesn't Brewer host, or co-host another hour, whereas Mika is done after Morning Joe?

Throwing a baseball overhand is an unnatural
exercise and must be taught.

Now standing up to pee is an evolutionary moment!

Any many of us still can't seem to hit the target while standing up. Less evolved, I guess.

Ratigan is such an arrogant TOOL!

I dislike him immensely. Really tried to give him a shot. But he talks non-stop and interrupts everyone. His tone of voice also reeks of self-importance.

Since I cannot stant AM Joke and now Ratigan, I can't even watch my "fav" news station, MSNBC, until 10 am CST.

Ratigan has to go.

I'm a "girl," and I resent his mysogyny.

Most of the girls I know can't throw or catch, don't think they want to ruin their nails or moisturised hands. Admittedly I can only throw with my left hand, using my right is just a clumsy wrist action with no power or accuracy, similar to my female mates.

Why don't they throw overhand?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:52 PM on 07/16/2009

He said GENERALLY. In general most women don't throw like the women on women's fast pitch softball tournaments. In general men throw better than women, just like in general men run faster than women, and are stronger than women. Those aren't sexist statements, and obviously there are exception to the rule, but general those statements are true.

We need to stop being so hypersensitive. Women and men are physiologically different. The difference between the way way each genders shoulders and elbows are, not to mention the musculature, means that the average male throws "better" (i.e. faster, further, harder), than the average female. OF COURSE there are exceptions, as there are any time you deal with averages of large populations. So in other words "girls don't throw that well, generally".

The man figures insulting a woman's sex/gender is okay. More women would tell men to shut up... not just the ones who say it to their husbands.

It's not about gender equality or muscle tone or biology or anything else. It's just about practice. Boys, GENERALLY, spend a lot more time learning to throw and practicing throwing, whether for fun or in organized sports than girls GENERALLY do.

It's perfectly logical then that as men, given their experience and practice with throwing that men GENERALLY throw better than women, who GENERALLY have way fewer miles on their throwing arms. Why is it so hard to accept that?

It's not like one's throwing ability is some determinant factor in the wealth or value of a human being. [Unless you're a pro ball player]

I understand what you are saying. It's just that the term "like a girl" is used to denigrate the person it is directed at. That is a culturally accepted way of indicating that a certain group of people, girls, are somehow inferior or weak because they don't match the masculine expectations or norms of the manly men.

You are right, it is logical to assume that a given group (men) have more experience and training in throwing a ball, however, it isn't logical to accept that those who don't throw as well are inferior in some way.

I know I'm being a little picky but I'm trying to express a specific viewpoint. I understand that in daily life, both men and women lob little 'shots' at each in fun and without intending harm.

Peace,

The Robot
