Let's not forget that 40 Years ago today man embarked on the greatest adventure of the 20th century and yet there are still fools out there that believe that that didn't happen either.

If this were to really happen a jet that close, going that fast would pretty much shatter all those windows right?

Rattle the window not shatter and it's not as close as it seems.

Exactly. The plane isn't right on top of the building as it appears. I'm sure it definitely woke a few nappers though lol.

The pix was no doubt shot through a telephoto lens which dramatically flattens the perspective, i.e., the jet is likely not nearly as close to the apartments as the image suggests.

Good fake photo, but a fake.
Watch the number markings on both wings: on the right wing the first two disappeared, even though it would be clearly visible through the balcony's rails.
And that ends that.
Nice shot though.

I've seen very views in SF when the Navy team visits for fleet week.
I know it's not everone's cup of tea but if there existed a condo where I could walk out onto my balcony and watch warbirds fly by, I'd pay plenty.

If that had been me on that balcony, I would have had to rush back into the house and change my underwear.

If this thing is going 400 mph, you'd think there'd be some motion artifacts somewhere in the shot... in the aircraft, or in the building, in the plants in the foreground, somewhere.

Or is it just the right place at the right time at the right shutter speed? Awesome photo.

Any professional photographers out there?

Not how it appears. It's called perspective compression. Search those terms if curious.

On measuring the man (say 6') and the Wingspan (44.9') compression seems minimal. The plane is quite close!

I hate (love) to burst everyone's bubble, but this photo is just an example of a little photoshop magic. There is absolutely, positively no way that any officer would allow a high-performance fighter aircraft to perform any manuover other than straight, level flight that close to the ground over a populated area while traveling right next to an apartment building. It simply would not happen.

The wingspan of an F18 is about 44 feet, and the photo shows the wings spanning four floors. That's roughly fourty feet. The perspective difference would indicate that the Hornet is traveling about 25 away from the building (yes I did the math, literally). So-called "perspective compression" would not account for this because that is more a phenom. of manipulating depth-of-field. Additionally, at the distance the math says this aircraft must be from the building, most of those windows would be shattered from the engine roar.

It is a neat pic though.

I've already put a few posts here, but once again all you need for this effect is a long telephoto lens and a quick shutter speed. That apartment is probably across the street from the water and the plane could be a 1/4 to 1/2 mile away, over the water. I'm not a "pro" photographer, but I have been taking pictures for about 40 years and you learn a lot in that amount of time.

Agreed. At 1/500 th or faster, at f 11 or so would do it. Newer digitals with iso capability greater than 3200 and using say a 400mm tele would make this child's play and take the image at 1/2000th or better (=Zero blur). At 8 frames per sec at those settings one of the pictures would make the cut.

As a photojournalist, I can't say definitively that this isn't photoshopped. But I read in the Wired.com site that it is estimated the jet is about 300 meters from the building, the pilot was authorized, apparently, to do a close flyby. And yes, perspective compression is very possible.
I've photographed airshows and have similarly spectacular shots.
The depth of field looks authentic and, yes, on a sunny day, with a fast shutter speed one could achieve this photo.
And it's an AP photo, assuming they haven't been duped by the photographer, it's extremely likely to be legit

Horse*crap. Ft. Lauderdale Air Show in 1997 an F-14 flew close enough to the ground that when he pulled up, we were hit by jet exhaust.

Cool picture.

Always cool of the military-industrial-complex to show off its tax dollars well spent, especially in the booming prosperity of the land of milk and honey in luxurious Detroit.

The jets should've flown with a price tag attached to it, just to show the serfs how much they care.

Probably not quite a close as it appears. The photographic phenomenon is called perspective compression.

I tend to disagree. The wingspan of the Super Hornet is 40.5 feet. The picture shows the wings spanning 3 floors of the building. If place against the building the aircraft would probably span 4 floors.
That airplane isn't that far from the building and that fellow on the balcony probably got an earful.

I'm not so sure about this photo...first of all, fighter jets are LOUD, and there's Joe Cool on the balcony NOT reacting to the noise.
Second , let's see "the rest of the roll", so to speak...this can't be the only shot captured...

This aircraft, making this sharp of a turn, is probably doing well over 400 mph. You'd see the aircraft long before you'd hear it. If they took the picture about 2 or 3 seconds later, you'd definitely see a reaction.

Big0725: You are WRONG again.
The jet is rotated horizontally, yes. But there is no way to tell if it is in a tight turn or just rolling. If, as you say the speed is "well over 400 mph" that means very little. The speed of sound is 768.095 mph at a temperature of 20°C or 68°F. That plane is not going that fast or the photographer would have to be shooting at 1/10,000 of a second or faster to get such a sharp picture. (It is sooo good, in fact that I wonder if it was photoshopped in the first place)

Actually "cornering velocity" for most jet fighters is somewhere around 400 knots.

In addition, the F-18 is famous for its low-speed handling so he could be going quite a bit less than that.

Probably taken with a long lens - which severely compresses the FOV. The aircraft was likely 1/4 to 1/2 mile away.

It's truly sad that many on here don't understand the basic science involved behind optics and what makes up the views we see in pictures like this.

This is not photo shopped. Everything you see in the photo is consistant with the photo as described, with the plane several hundred feet further beyond the building than what it appears in the picture.

Maybe some of the "photoshoppers" here should take a basic course in photography or some remedial science.

Actually I have been heavily into photography since 1966, and I have used Photoshop since the first version. I don't see how you can claim with certainty that the photo is not composited unless you shot it yourself. If that's the case, then how about giving your real name?

Thanks!

Of course if you didn't take the picture yourself, you can't know for sure, but if you been into photography for that long(just a little longer than me), you should know that a simple telephoto lens will produce that effect with no altering.

I was at a Texas Rangers ball game on opening day and a squad of these birds did a flyby. That was so cool. For everyone complaining, our pilots need training and this serves as an effective recruitment tool.
