Heather Zeo Arrested For Having Sex With Underage Student (VIDEO)

Heather Zeo, a 36-year-old married mother of three who teaches at North Penn High School in Pennsylvania, was arrested for allegedly having sex with one of her underage students. The student described how the relationship escalated from Facebook flirtations to sexual intercourse during a courtroom appearance.

Prosecutors say that Zeo engaged in a "calculated seduction" and that they "will be asking for jail time."

Zeo is also accused of having an inappropriate relationship with another underage student. She is currently out on bail.

i just read the article about the 17 y/o who sailed solo around the world. i have a real hard time believing that people can join the military (which i did) or sail around the world (which i admit i've never done but it doesn't sound like it's all that easy) at 17 but they're not smart enough to decide whether they should or should not have sex.

Right. For the people who believe in evolution (and that means tr0lls excluded), look at our primate cousins. Chimps, orangutans, gorillas, and baboons reach sexual maturity in well under 17 years. Bonobos are pygmy chimps that live south of the congo river (chimps live north of the congo), and they are hyper-sexual. The only thing taboo in bonobo groups is mother-son relations. Every other combination is okay, and every 'act' that we have thought of, they already do. That's basically all they do all day besides eat and pick lice out of each other's hair. We take after the chimps though. The chimps are much less sexual and much more violent than their bonobo cousins to the south. Gorillas have a situation where one male (the silverback) has a harem of females and the young males wander around the outskirts of the harem trying to overthrow the silverback or mate secretly with one of his females. 17 is old for other primates.

There is some middle ground here. The reason this is a big circus is because the DA wants jail time. The woman is already losing her job- her marriage may be in trouble. Her kids must be terribly embarassed. She must be embarassed.

The victims are also living in this media circus. Their families don't need the publicity. The entire school is side-tracked by this. All the kids are talking- rumors are flying.

She probably knows it was wrong, she probably doesn't have a prior record and would take a plea if it wasn't jail time. Give her some probation, fine, counseling, community service etc. and get it over with.

But the DA is making this into a big political issue because DAs are motivated by politics- they are supposed to be tough on crime and if he gave her a non-jail plea offer, he's worried someone will run against him and say he's not tough enough on sex offenders. He apparently prefers grandstanding to resolving cases in a reasonable manner.

Why should women not get jail time and men should? In an age of narcissistic self-indulgence, this kind of behavior and lack of ethics needs to be stopped some way.

You bring up a very good point -- men are jailed for their inability to control their sexual urges, and women should be too . . . which begs the question about what remedies are there for such behavior.

I believe it's a mental disorder -- narcissism, anal-retentivism, manifestations of earlier child abuse, whateverrrr -- I think it's a condition that requires a psychological treatment, not necessarily incarceration (there are exceptions to every situation, however -- serial rapists, for instance).

Maybe, the standards for punishment are different for men and women b/c women don't usually use physical force on their victims and men (very often) do . . . ?

As a 17 yr old, I'm sure he had much more attractive classmates he could have pursued. But, she's the one who violated a code of conduct by egging him on. Incidentally, there's a Philip Zeo (the name of her husband) who's in a heavy metal "christian" rock group; fundie mental masturbation about armageddon, salvation and such. We need to educate teachers and students that sexual contact between them is illegal and unethical, for the students as part of all Sex Ed classes and for teachers as part of their training and with annual reminders. We need to end the glorification in media of sexual beheaviors between teens and adults, especially teachers and other authority figures. Perhaps too we need to do further investigations of teaching canidates, to weed out those that may have tendences for sexual contacts with minor or any students.

What if the young man turned 18 shortly after he began college and the next day began a sexual relationship with a professor who was 36 years old?

Public school systems have an absolute ethical obligation to ensure that teachers' relationships with all students, up to age 18 and beyond, are platonic and professional. Immediate termination of an offending teacher and the loss of the person's teaching license should be a sufficient remedy.

Young adults and young nearly adults make choices about sexual relationships and they grow through the results, whether painful or not. That is part of life. But the law is punishing the student to punish the teacher. If the law were truly designed to protect the students, it wouldn't subject them to public trials about their private lives. That is where there is fertile ground for trauma and emotional damage.

The three-ring circus these young men are living through is exponentially more damaging than the affairs they had with this teacher.
