Jeff Sessions: "We're Going To Do That Crack Cocaine Thing" (VIDEO)

Senator Jeff Sessions simultaneously shocked and cracked up the Sotomayor hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday afternoon when he said he was looking forward to doing "that crack cocaine thing" with Senator Patrick Leahy and Wade Henderson, the president and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights.

Sessions, in a casual tone, said "Mr. Henderson, It's good to work with you. Senator Leahy and I are talking during these hearings, we're going to do that crack cocaine thing that you and I have talked about before."

After an awkward pause, Henderson laughed to himself and said, "Thank you, Senator, I appreciate that."

While the Senate gallery laughed, and witnesses including NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former FBI director Louis Freeh snickered, Sessions sputtered, "Let me correct the record."

Sessions explained: "I misspoke. We're going to reduce the burden of penalties in some of the crack cocaine cases and make them fair."

I think we should keep asking him about that time he said he wanted to do crack cocaine, over and over and over and over again, no matter how many times he has to repeat himself.

"Senator, what is bothering me is that time you said you wanted to do crack cocaine, let's revisit that.."

So I guess I'm asking today what do you really believe on those subjects.

That there is no real crack cocaine and that senators do not do crack cocaine?

Or that there is real crack cocaine and the senators DO do crack cocaine?

Reducing penalties for crack cocaine is appropriate. We need to normalize and reduce sentencing and find a means to engage this epidemic. Too many of the wrong people are in prison and prison itself is creating and educating prisoners to become better criminals. Recidivism is rife and much of it is around drug use and drug laws creating cyclic trends in inmate populations. They get out with little to zero rehabilitation, test dirty for drugs and they are back in prison. Is failing a drug test really grounds for incarceration when there has been no attempt to rehabilitate?
Draconian drug laws aren't making any difference in the drug problem... its just maintaining a prison industry and keeping cash flowing to jurisdictions and employing everyone necessary for the US to maintain an incarceration rate that is so high that one in four persons in the world and one out of 100people in America are in prison.
