Bo

New York Times:

BEFORE my arrival in the White House in April, I was not well known to the American people. Perhaps understandably, I was greeted with some suspicion. "Portuguese water dog" has a foreign sound to it. My hair covers my eyes, which can create the impression that I am not trustworthy. From the first, I took it upon myself not only to illustrate my own belief in clear thinking and accountability, but to give the American people a sense of what their lives would be like during my time in the White House. As I approach the milestone of my first 100 days in office, I want to reiterate some of my basic convictions.

I am sure he is lovable, but that is one ugly dog.

That was great fun, really clever.
I know that the Obama's highest priority on the dog selection was the girl's allergies. Also temperament was crucial for an animal that will have much contact with strangers and considerable stress.
Can't have the First Dog having a noosh on the public.
It still saddens me that they couldn't have followed through and gotten a Pure Breed rescue.
It would have set such a fine example for people to follow. Instead now all the wannabes will have to go out there copy what they did by getting some expensive dog from a breeder.

I'm from Missouri and we have an appalling puppy mill problem. There are so many good animals at shelters and roaming the streets that need homes.
Millions put down every year.
We need some national leadership on this problem. Obama could have done wonders with this one simple act and a few statements about being kind and responsible to our 4 legged companions.

If Bo showed some bit of gratitude to the Obama's for "rescuing" him from a non-threatening, unconditional living situation after being returned by 2 other owners while millions of strays wait for a chance that never comes...
Perhaps instead of the brief interruption for him to chase a ball, he could have led a moment of silence for that "mutt like Obama," who was put down the day Bo went home with the first family....

I'd respect Ben Greenman's ghost writing a little more.

I didn't like his comment about cats but then - what can you expect from a dog?

That's so sweet. Bo is so much nicer than the Bushes' dog, Buddy or whatever his name was.

Wasn't Buddy the Clintons' dog? I think the Bush dog was Barney.
