David Arquette Apologizes For Latina Women Remark

David Arquette, who was fighting hunger in New York this week, has issued a statement apologizing for comments he made about Latina women, saying in part, "I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds."

Appearing on Fox News earlier this week, Arquette said in part:

"I think Latina women are, I mean, it depends on the woman, but I think they are very, they have great judgment, but there are some that are just nuts. I'm just saying."

And Friday he apologized.

STATEMENT:

"I would like to issue an apology for the comments I made on Fox and Friends. My intent was to be humorous and not offensive. I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds. What saddens me most is that it took away from the issue of Hunger in America, for which I was on the show to begin with. I work and a pantry in Venice California with a hispanic women named Delpia (who has been feeding people at St. Joseph's Center for 29 years) and she is my personal hero. Having been raised in Los Angeles I have grown up with a deep and profound love for the Latino culture."

I think the point of his apology is that stereotypes n'er do anyone any justice. I know many Latina women who are not only sane but take issue with the notion that they could be categorically stamped as batsh!t crazy. On the same note, comments laced with discriminatory language tend to reflect a deeper thread of prejudicial behavior based on stereotypes often portrayed tirelessy by the media. If I were you, I would think about the ramifications of your comment. I'm sure talented actors like Salma Hayek, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez (questionable) and others would appreciate being typecast as head cases simply because other people echoed your sentiment. And I'm sure Judge (soon to be Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor) would LOVE to be known as the "hot-headed" justice. Talk about progress!!!

This is another non-story. This article does not mention if any Latina women actually complained or even took offense. This is a comedian (of sorts) who made a joke. Not a great one, but a joke all the same. I have a feeling the apology was more pre-emptive or to garner publicity.

Some of these comments go way to far with the racist claims. We need to calm down people and stop getting carried away over percieved issues and stop allowing media to dictate what is news. This is why we have missed so many important problems. If we were paying more attention we would have been better prepared for the financial crises (as citizens, not as a government), we would have been aware of the more imporatant issues regarding on Irag presence, instead of the constant side issues fed to us by the government and the media.

We need to stay ever vigilant and focused on what is important. What kind of baby Madonna is adopting this month is not headline news - there is absolutly nothing wrong with spending some time on the lighter news, but it must not be our primary focus.

No apology necessary.....from my experience living around Latin people both in the northeast and southeast, they generally come with large helping of self righteousn­ess....not all of them, but a large number of them. Thus I was not surprised or disappointed by Sotomayor's remark as I am sure she believes that somewhere in her core. They are also among some of the coolest and smartest people I've ever met.

I can only guess you are referring to the large number of religious Hispanics. This is rarely talked about but there are large segments of Blacks and Hispanics who are clouded by rigid religious beliefs. There is a rigid intolerance amongst the same groups that request tolerance. There is also a lot of hypocrisy just as with the White fanatics. I have heard people complain about racism and then in the next breathe make some horrendous comments about other groups such as gays. Often such comments do make them look incredibly stupid and intolerant.
