David Arquette Apologizes For Latina Women Remark

David Arquette, who was fighting hunger in New York this week, has issued a statement apologizing for comments he made about Latina women, saying in part, "I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds."

Appearing on Fox News earlier this week, Arquette said in part:

"I think Latina women are, I mean, it depends on the woman, but I think they are very, they have great judgment, but there are some that are just nuts. I'm just saying."

And Friday he apologized.

STATEMENT:

"I would like to issue an apology for the comments I made on Fox and Friends. My intent was to be humorous and not offensive. I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds. What saddens me most is that it took away from the issue of Hunger in America, for which I was on the show to begin with. I work and a pantry in Venice California with a hispanic women named Delpia (who has been feeding people at St. Joseph's Center for 29 years) and she is my personal hero. Having been raised in Los Angeles I have grown up with a deep and profound love for the Latino culture."

It was funny and at least a little true. What ethnic group (or gender) does not include crazy people along with admirable people. Sometimes the crazy ones are the admirable ones.

Sad that so many things need apologies these days, and I would say that his apology shows his heart is in the right place.

There is WAY too much fuss over this. David Arquette said nothing wrong. He made a funny quip. I'm a Mexican-American woman and I am NOT offended by what he said. Jeez, people, we need to get a grip here. I don't want to live in a world where people are being hung out to dry for the innocent things we say when they are indeed, innocent. I find the whole argument totally ridiculous. And he need not have apologized, either. Let's not take the political correctness so far that we ALL fall off the edge of sanity. And for the record, I know some pretty crazy Latinas myself. They're called: "my aunts". Get over it.

Argquette is right, I am sure some Latina women are nuts, just like some women and men in general are nuts or uneducated or smart or funny or tall, short, blonde or any other possible characterization you can think of. Just like actors, some are smart, some are dumb, some are average, some are talented, some are not. Some know when to make comments like he did, and some don't.

There is nothing inherently untrue about what he said, but in the context in which the statement was made, it wasn't the smartest thing he could have said.

The big question for me is why he was being asked about this anyway? The idea that because someone is a celebrity, their opinion is somehow more important or more informed than the average person is ludicrous. I have heard a lot of ill-informed, stupid things said about current events by actors (think Victoria Jackson) that show that in spite of all the opportunities they have to be informed, they are no smarter and don't know any more than Joe the Plumber.

TOTALLY. Mine too! Alicia was and IS out of her mind! BUT, that doesn't mean I don't fully respect her or love her! I grew up with Davy and BELIEVE me, he has NO PROBLEM (quite the opposite) with "Latino" women; now that I think about it, Davie has never had any problem with ANY WOMEN. Tho, since his mid to late teens, he always had a thing for "older" women; like grandma old! (he told me once, " I like that soft old lady skin!")
