David Arquette Apologizes For Latina Women Remark

David Arquette, who was fighting hunger in New York this week, has issued a statement apologizing for comments he made about Latina women, saying in part, "I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds."

Appearing on Fox News earlier this week, Arquette said in part:

"I think Latina women are, I mean, it depends on the woman, but I think they are very, they have great judgment, but there are some that are just nuts. I'm just saying."

And Friday he apologized.

STATEMENT:

"I would like to issue an apology for the comments I made on Fox and Friends. My intent was to be humorous and not offensive. I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds. What saddens me most is that it took away from the issue of Hunger in America, for which I was on the show to begin with. I work and a pantry in Venice California with a hispanic women named Delpia (who has been feeding people at St. Joseph's Center for 29 years) and she is my personal hero. Having been raised in Los Angeles I have grown up with a deep and profound love for the Latino culture."

I didn't see the TV clip, and maybe I should before I comment, but I don't think Arquette meant "nuts' in a bad way, but more of an affectionate way. I am a Latina, and we're not so uptight that we don't get Arquette's vibe. I have a couple of Wise Latina aunties, and they're nuts in the very best possible way a happy, well adjusted, life loving person could be "nuts!" It takes an pissant outfit like Fox News to spin it into something it's not for their own sleaze bag purposes.

Had these remarks been uttered by Family Guy's Peter Griffin we would not be reading this story. Why the double standard? I know that Peter Griffin is not a real person, but his lines are written by real people. Why are Family Guys writers not held to the same standard as Arquette, or anyone else who gets in trouble for making controversial statements?

The best answer that I can come up with is that when we watch Family Guy, we know that everything said is intended as a joke -- even the lines designed to illicit maximum shock value -- and that there is no intent to genuinely offend any person or group.

The same standard should apply to everyone.

In one episode -- to provide an example -- Peter asks his friends if they would rather be 'Black or crippled'. I don't remember anyone trying to drum up outrage over those remarks, even though they are horribly offensive if you accept them at face value.

Why do the members of La Raza keep referring themselves as Latinos and every other person in Los Angeles keeps using the word Latino. I know it may not be the proper identification, but it's not a derogatory remark to say the least. Kind of like the Caucasian classification when we call know that's far from accurate.
