David Arquette Apologizes For Latina Women Remark

David Arquette, who was fighting hunger in New York this week, has issued a statement apologizing for comments he made about Latina women, saying in part, "I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds."

Appearing on Fox News earlier this week, Arquette said in part:

"I think Latina women are, I mean, it depends on the woman, but I think they are very, they have great judgment, but there are some that are just nuts. I'm just saying."

And Friday he apologized.

STATEMENT:

"I would like to issue an apology for the comments I made on Fox and Friends. My intent was to be humorous and not offensive. I have nothing but love and respect for Latina women and women in general of all cultural backgrounds. What saddens me most is that it took away from the issue of Hunger in America, for which I was on the show to begin with. I work and a pantry in Venice California with a hispanic women named Delpia (who has been feeding people at St. Joseph's Center for 29 years) and she is my personal hero. Having been raised in Los Angeles I have grown up with a deep and profound love for the Latino culture."

I think he was right to apologize, he had to know that this is a touchy subject right now and that some people would be offended. I'm just saying, if a repub had made a comment like this I don't think a lot of people would be saying "lighten up, where's your sense of humor?"

AS a liberal person who has been all over the stupid stuff Republican politicians have been saying about Sonya Sotamayer, I find this remark pretty harmless. Granted I am not a Latino woman. I am however a women with weight issues and if I carried on every time a fat joke was made, I would have no voice.

I couldn't tell by article if there had been an uproar. It's fine if he felt the need to apologize, but of all the jokes I have heard over the years that poke a little fun, his was the very least offensive in general.

I would think that this is a big story, because fox news will use this in a promo against Sotomayor to say that "even David Arquette thinks this woman is nuts" and then show the clip of him saying it out of context. He thought about that once he left the station, and his publicist had him issue and apology immediatey That's what he gets for associating with fox news' people!

Of course Arquette should have apologized. First, there are nuts members of any ethnic group, so for him to tar all Latina women with the same brush made him guilty of stereotyping. Then, the fact that he made the comments on Faux Friends at the time the first Latina woman is being considered for SCOTUS just played into the wacky conservative mindset of Faux listeners already convinced mistakenly that Sotomayor is a terrorist supporter. It was a huge mistake for him to have gone on Faux Friends and a huge mistake for him to make the comments he made at this time in America.
