Alaska Goo

UPDATE:

The mysterious blob has been identified - it appears to be algae.

-----------------------------------------------

Sometimes reality is even stranger than science fiction. A huge unknown substance, described by eye witnesses as a dark, gooey blob is floating off the north coast of Alaska. No one in the area remembers seeing anything like it before.

According to Don Hunter of The Alaska Daily News:

Nobody knows for sure what the gunk is, but Petty Officer 1st Class Terry Hasenauer says the Coast Guard is sure what it is not.

"It's certainly biological," Hasenauer said. "It's definitely not an oil product of any kind. It has no characteristics of an oil, or a hazardous substance, for that matter.

"It's definitely, by the smell and the makeup of it, it's some sort of naturally occurring organic or otherwise marine organism."

Samples have been taken for laboratory testing to help unlock this mystery.

A team from the North Slope in Alaska shot this video footage from a helicopter.

The link provided in this article DOES NOT say it's algae - it says it's a mystery. Algae is one of the suspects, but that ADN story hasn't been updated in over three days. I searched ADN for more information, but there isn't an update to be found.

So, it's still a mystery. Lab results are due back next week.

Or -- is Huffpost running it's own secret lab for unidentified arctic goo?

"What is it?" isn't the important question. "Why is it?" is what we need to know. 15 mile algae slicks have never been known to ooze from glaciers. What changed?

Great, we got an unidentified mystery blob in the upper north pacific and a Texas-sized plastic debris field north of Hawaii in the central pacific! What's next? This sure has been the year for bad news.

And the big news is what? It obviously was going to turn out to be algae. The question is why there? Why then?

Obviously it's the shed skin of some large creature. I expect Godzilla or that Cloverfield thing to emerge on some coastline in the next week or two.... What? Just algae? Oh.....

Nevermind. :)

I was in the Arctic North Atlantic Ocean in the early seventies.

Almost 40 years ago, there was already trash floating everywhere.

Katherine you should ask someone who know something about aircraft before you attempt to identify them. The video was not shot from a helicopter, but from a fixed wing aircraft. If you don't know what that means, ask the nearest man.
