With a little prep and the right gear, you won't need to worry about breaking down between a bus and a Beemer, or even losing your way - you can just sit back and enjoy the pollution-free ride.

Always good to see these articles, but the reality is many people have to deal with traffic where they live and many people can't deal with that. We need bike lanes, even if we close existing ones for bike traffic, create an environment thats actually safe to ride in and people will ride.

Another New York City centric article from liberal lala land .

I biked in NYC for years. It was the best way to get to and from work.

Doesn't work when you're in an exburb commuting to and from a major city.

The USA is not NYC. Get real.

that's very true
i live in L.A. and we have lots of clowns commuting 50 miles plus round trip from Victorville, in the desert, to L.A. county somewhere.
what are these clowns going to do when world oil production starts to decline (terminal decline)?
world production has been on a plateau since 2005, how long can that last?
unless Iraq starts producing allot more oil soon..., those exurbs are going to be abandoned.

urban sprawl ws a very bad idea, wouldn't you say?

We've got 300 million and counting people in this country. With the rates of illegal and legal immigration the sprawl will only get worse.

Anyone who can develop an efficient way to transport people to and from their homes to the needed thousands of central mass transit hubs will get the grand prize.

I don't think it's possible.

Get a life and get real.
If you are not seeing things from exactly my point of view, you are wrong and I'll tell you to get real, you something something (insert driveby insult here).

When I lived in DC I rode my bike to work for years and what made it painless were a couple of things- great trails in DC-VA (my route) ,access to a free gym at my office building (shower :) and at 30 minutes it was a fairly quick trip. Then I was hit by a cab riding uphill on Wisconsin ave.., during rush hour and dislocated shoulder though I had a cute jogger come to my rescue and stop traffic.

My commuting days were over. Wouldn't dream of commuting here in NYC...it's the parks for me and quick trips around the hood.

Unless you live in Portland or some other community with car-free bike trails, you'd be safer sticking a loaded gun in your mouth.

Drivers at 5:00 are angry, in a hurry, and would just as soon run you off the road as take 3 seconds to give you your right of way.

1. Get on a bike.
2. Ride.

How hard is it? I've done it through all of the elements. Don't be scared.

cycling is great on the open road...nyc still has a lot of catching up to do in terms of providing trails and respecting others sharing the road or actually others period- it's a tough place even for a pedestrian.

On the East side, maybe, but on the West side you can ride from the Hudson Bridge all the way to Battery Park on a trail that is shared with pedestrians, roller bladers and joggers. On weekends, Central Park is closed to auto traffic and going around the park is a real treat. Considering the lack of space, there are a lot of bike lanes but like everything else in NYC, you have to be alert at all times.

Be careful - although riding can improve your cardiovascular health, your financial health, and your psycho/spiritual health ... it is dangerous. Almost everyone who rides for years is going to have a somewhat serious spill. Helmet & gloves can help but you are going 30-50 mphs sometimes and there is nothing between you and the pavement .. and auto drivers don't give you that much respect...

Just took my ten year spill the other day. I tore up my palm from trying to brace from my face hitting the ground and, my knee got scraped up pretty good. Nothing broken.
Its really a strange feeling to think (over a matter of 2-3 seconds) I have a strange feeling that my face is about to slam into that pole and that I might be just about ready to die from blunt head injury.

And another thing,

As we get older, Im finding tat I dont recover so quickly from these spills. I really dont want to be around for the next ten year spill =(

Get real, man. Have you ever ridden a bicycle? Only the pros go 30-50mph. You'd have to be nuts to ride that fast in a city environment.
