New York Times:

We've known for years that the Bush administration ignored and broke the law repeatedly in the name of national security. It is now clear that many of those programs could have been conducted just as easily within the law perhaps more effectively and certainly with far less damage to the justice system and to Americans' faith in their government.

the ultimate problems in any legal action are going to be ----

they still need 67 votes in the SENATE which they do not have --- if they go that route

they still have the same bias on the SUPREME COURT that stole the election for these guys years ago

Congress doesn't need to do a thing. Eric Holder simply needs to do his duty.

Obama is also facing a meltdown started by bush defaulting on loans ..So which one first..I believe he wants to help us first..I hope he can do two things at once because this has to come out before it can be fixed..The old corrupt system will have to come down before a honest system with interigity rises up..This business of americans being sold to the highest bidder has to stop..

I would go so far as to say that if Obama injects politics into the DOJ, just as Bush did, especially to hinder bringing Bush thugs to justice, that would be grounds for HIS impeachment.

Politics are the rpublican way of saying rule of law. Other countries know firsthand that Americans support the torturing of children ultil we say it is not so.

So long as the worldview of those that oppose us is that we are a country that will stoop to the lowest levels of crimes against humanity, we will never be safe from the millions who hate us for our arrogance.

"""""""A full accounting is the only way to ensure these abuses never happen again. """""""

that is total non-sense

prosecution conviction and serious jail time is required

a gab fest with a slap on the wrist admonition wont cut it.

I'm really sick and tired of our two tiered justice system in America; one for the wealthy and one for everybody else. If anybody on this post broke similar laws, they'd bury us under the jail house.

Yet, here we have three men that have squandered America's future on their illegal power mongering ways. Our children and grandchildren will suffer for their criminal behavior.

This all needs to be brought out in a criminal investigation. The American people and media deserve to know the full story of these contemptuous men. If Congress doesn't investigate these high crimes, this would make them accessories to these criminal acts.

I believe we've only seen the tip of the iceberg here. Maybe some our Congressional representatives were involved and that's why we aren't seeing any move towards hearings.

All this criminal activity just to keep us safe, and on top of it all we tax payers get the privilige of paying the tab for illegal wars, torture and the melt down of Ponzi Street.

Widespread torture around the world, widespread wiretapping and illegal surveillance of the American people, widespread election fraud, illegal detentions of US and foreign citizens around the world, intimidation of the media, assassiantion ssquads made into a way of operating by Cheney...
every article of the Constitution broken: a Nuremberg trial of the Bush-Cheney gang is in order: I congratulate the NYT for raising the subject.

So, the main characters of the Report are Bush, Cheney and Yoo.

All three are still not indicted.

After Watergate, Nixon paid a high political price and almost went to jail for less than what these guys did. John Dean, the former White House Counsel who got involved in the cover-up did go to jail for less than what John Yoo wrote in his memos.

I very much doubt that Obama and Congress have the political muscle to launch an investigation and to prosecute them.

The Times didn't call for an investigation "back then" because, ably represented by the likes of Judith Miller, David Brooks and Thom Friedman, it was busy managing Bush and Cheney's disinformation PR campaign and leading the cheering section for the invasion of Iraq.

On the other hand, "what we all know" now is that investigations are what's called for when a tsunami of prima facie evidence points to a deliberate pattern of criminal activity.

P.S. - Republicans have already thoroughly discredited themselves, and far more effectively than any imagined "liberal" effort could accomplish. Take a peek at the hypocritical, juvenile GOP sniping in the Sotomayor hearings for a clear example.

Those thugs don't need any help from "liberals".

I agree. These hearings are a farce. The repubs. went in there determined to get their faces on TV, looking as though they were taking things seriously. Juvenile antics are to be expected from them these days. Well, it sure beats actually WORKING for a living, representing their constituents is "hard work" especially when they are trying to please their money men. Are there ANY adults left in the g.o.p.?
