'Whip It' FIRST LOOK: Ellen Page At The Roller Derby

Huffington Post   First Posted: 08/17/09 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 02:40 PM ET

Whip It

Fox Searchlight has just released the trailer for 'Whip It,' a girl power and indie-rock infused coming-of-age film starring Ellen Page and helmed by first-time director Drew Barrymore.

Ellen Page, in her usual angsty misfit role, is a foundering teen beauty contestant in her small Texas town until roller derby queens Juliette Lewis and Kristen Wiig help her find her place in the rink. This isn't the plan her mom (Marcia Gay Harden) had in mind, but it looks like a lot of fun. The terrific supporting cast also includes Jimmy Fallon, Eve and Daniel Stern.

'Whip It' opens October 9.

Quick Poll

Will you see it?

lacing up the skates already

maybe

keep me out of the rink

I'm extremely excited about this movie. I just discovered Roller Derby in Montreal and I absolutely love it. Maybe Drew should send Ellen to Montreal for some training because the girls are fierce. See here:

Also, I found another video that explains the rules of Roller Derby and that was quite helpful in fully understanding how it all works ;)

Enjoy and see you all at the movies xx T.

I like Drew Barrymore, and it would be interested to see how she does as a director.... Oh, plus cute chics on wheels are so hot, is there anything better?

"The terrific supporting cast also includes Jimmy Fallon, Eve and Daniel Stern. "

whoa, whoa whoa, Jimmy Fallon is what passes for a member of a terrific supporting case? I guess I've been out of the loop lately.

Daniel Stern is still the best narrator of all time.

This does look kind of cute, but I'll wait until it's on DVD.

Ellen page is too one dimensional. She's from my city so I was proud to hear her get her big break but I've been completely let down by her acting. But she'll continue to get work regardless of her talent.

she's just starting, give her a break.

I bet her upcoming Jane Eyre (shooting soon) won't be a version of Juno :)

Whip It! is pretty much in the tradition of misfit finding her "people", but from the trailer , looks fun and energetic. I'm going!

i think it'll be a hoot and i'm looking forward to it-especially since that one night when my friends and i went to see a derby dolls game (they're LA's roller derby league) and who should be sitting a few rows in front of us but drew barrymore, ellen page and katherine keener!

Why is it that only a handful of actors and actresses always in whatever project they want to be in and someone like a Halle Berry who won an Academy Award struggles to be even offered roles beyond prostitute or girlfriend. Notice though those actors I'm mentioning (and please don't mention Will Smith) have a complexion similarity.

If you think Hollywood producers ignore people of color, why don't you just say that instead of hinting around at it? Own your anger.
08:44 PM on 07/18/2009
Where do express anger, what I wrote is an observation which doesn't mean anger. Sounds like I said that struck a nerve of yours...wonder why?

well, fox searchlight distributes smaller "indie" films. it could be that barrymore, who is also known for producing, got this project together on her own, just saying, i could be wrong.

maybe miss berry, or whoever else of such "complexion" should start a production company, and follow the indie model, rather than just wait for some big studio to do so

just saying
08:48 PM on 07/18/2009
...because women and people who are the same complexion and race of Halle don't get the financial backing to start their own production companies. If it were that simple, most actors of color would have done so many years ago and there would be a glut of them, but clearly that's not the case.

But be honest, really a white person or someone who isn't really burdened with this issue is usually the first person to say if people of color don't like the way Hollywood plays ball, then start their own...which is just a ridiculous statement if you understand how films are made and distributed.

Is it me, or does Ellen look a little like Janeane Garofalo with the glasses and that specific hairstyle?

I was so excited about this movie but it seems like any other outsider-overcoming-all-odds movie. It's just this one involves roller girls. Great cast though!

exactly. Decent cast indeed.
I imagine I'll stay out of that theatre and leave it to the local derby clubs who without a doubt will be organizing viewing parties weekly until they all have seen it. Twice.

Poisonous epitaphs dished out periodically.

I trained as a roller derby skater with the legendary San Francisco Bay Bombers and the Los Angeles T-Birds, and I came very close to landing a spot on a team roster until the outlaw league went bankrupt and out of business.

While all this may be a grassroots phenomenon, these skaters need to look up to those who came up in the ranks of the sport before them for guidance and wisdom.

Many of these skaters have no concept of team play, how to properly give and take a block, or how to properly fall.

For there is a right way, a wrong way, and a proper way to do it.

Raquel Welch learned it the hard way after falling and breaking her wrist while filming the movie "Kansas City Bomber."

I know some skaters from Seattle that are in the Leagues up here and I can tell you that they hae a lot of respect for the lady skaters that went before them.
