McClatchy:

A California Republican congressman wants to do a little writing on the walls of Washington's newest federal building. If Rep. Dan Lungren gets his way, Congress will spend nearly $100,000 to engrave the words "In God We Trust " and the Pledge of Allegiance in prominent spots at the Capitol Visitor Center.

We don't trust in god or care about anything his kid said about treating the least of us.

I say we make the engraving say "In Science We Trust".

It's done more for this nation than any supposed interdimensional uber being with magical powers ever has.

Yes let's start a new trend.

But you know the creationists will argue that science can't prove anything and can't be trusted. So maybe we should have what one poster suggested, "In Nothing We Trust."

or..

In _____ We TRust.

Why not make the engraving say, "In ________ We Trust" and leave the missing word as a variable which can be pasted in after every election.

I'm an atheist and I could care less. Where do you draw the line? Should we rename San Francisco, Corpus Christi, Santa Fe, San Diego etc, etc, etc,. They're all named after Catholic saints and in the case of Corpus Christi-the body of Christ. Religion is pretty intertwined in every culture on Earth. Good luck.

Then lets ban The Battle Hymn of The Republic and God Bless America at government events. MLK Day is also problematic. His movement was heavily Christian at it's core.

This is a newest federal building, not something that has been here for hundreds of years, so in the very least, the line should be drawn on anything built from present on.

Christmas is a national holiday, Thanksgiving is a religious holiday. Who or what is everyone thanking. Let's ban them too. Bibles at swearing ins. Chaplains for military personnel and at government hospitals.

Not every Christian in the country feels the need to emblazon their slogans on government buildings. Some actually appreciate the freedom from government intrusion in matters of theology. The First Amendment protects everyone.

Yes, the First Amendment says "freedom OF religion." It's NOT "freedom FROM religion."

Has anyone else noticed that of all the people coming in here to spew hate, fire, and brimstone, none of them have been Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, or any of the other Religions.

I find that an interesting commentary in itself.

- "In Zeus we trust"? "Allahu Akbar"?

Can you see how ridiculous it would be to have such things engraved on federal currency, or on the sides of public buildings?

Leave religion out of politics altogether, unless you are willing to allow ALL points of view.

Live and let live. As an agnostic, I could really care less if they wrote it or not. "In God We Trust" is written on the currency we use. Does that make me Christian? NO!

The only problem I have with this is the amount of money/time that is being wasted on these engravings. If some religous organization or another group wants to pony up the money, then fine.

Better yet, Lungren should go out there with his hammer and engrave it himself if he believes it to be so important.

As an agnostic, I do have a problem regardless if Church pays for it. Yes tax dollars is part of the problem but the underlying issue is still the same - sep. of church/state.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:57 PM on 07/18/2009

You're right, separation of church and state are very important. Yet, I think that in this particular case the location (The Capitol Visitor Center) and the fact that the Pledge will be included as well, makes it more for foreign and domestic visitors to learn/acknowledge the history of our country.

What is clearly unacceptable are those who use their personal beliefs to deny rights to others like the right to marry.

"Religious belief included or excluded, what the GLBTG suffer is not so much from religion as it is a belief that it's simply wrong. The majority who happen to think that are religious also and it is that which is thrown back at them as the reason their decision is decried as wrong. Without religion, many still view it as immoral and wrong. However, using Democratic principles, they deny equality to those who would practice such things.

The same reasoning applied to incest, polygamy show why they are not allowed as well."

Out of curiosity, why do you think the public has been led to believe that gay is "immoral and wrong." Who do you think is telling them to have these feelings? There is no scientific reason . The reason lies in prejudices and religious indoctrination.

I swear, if one more person equates a se xual orientation to a practice of multiple wives/husbands (usually abusive unless the relationship is also polyamorous) and sex ual acts like incest I am going to start throwing shoes.

- Which 'god' are they referring to?
The American people worship many different gods, and many worship none at all.

If they have to inscribe anything, then they should inscribe; "In gods most of us trust".
Wouldn't that be more accurate?

They don't have this problem in a lot of mid-East countries. Clearly we need to have our government establish a mandatory national religion to settle the argument.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:57 PM on 07/18/2009

In gods and goddesses that some of us trust would be more accurate.
