This video frame grab taken from a Taliban propaganda video released Saturday, July 18, 2009 shows an American soldier who went missing from his base in eastern Afghanistan June 30 and was later confirmed captured. The soldier, whose identity has not yet been confirmed by the Pentagon pending notification of members of Congress and the soldier's family, says his name, age and hometown on the video, which was released Saturday on a Web site pointed out by the Taliban. WASHINGTON — The American soldier who went missing June 30 from his base in eastern Afghanistan and was later confirmed to have been captured, appeared on a video posted Saturday to a Web site by the Taliban.

Two U.S. defense officials confirmed to The Associated Press that the man in the video is the captured soldier. The video provides the first glimpse the public has had of the missing soldier.

The soldier is shown in the 28-minute video with his head shaved and the start of a beard. He is sitting and dressed in a nondescript, gray outfit. Early in the video one of his captors holds the soldier's dog tag up to the camera. His name and ID number are clearly visible. He is shown eating at one point and sitting cross-legged.

The soldier, whose identity has not yet been released by the Pentagon pending notification of members of Congress and the soldier's family, says his name, age and hometown on the video, which was released Saturday on a Web site pointed out by the Taliban.

The soldier said the date is July 14. He says he was captured when he lagged behind on a patrol.

He is interviewed in English by his captors, and he is asked his views on the war, which he calls extremely hard, his desire to learn more about Islam and the morale of American soldiers, which he said was low.

Asked how he was doing, the soldier said on the video:

"Well I'm scared, scared I won't be able to go home. It is very unnerving to be a prisoner."

Story continues below
advertisement

He begins to answer questions in a matter-of-fact and sober voice, occasionally facing the camera, looking down and sometimes looking to the questioner on his left.

He later chokes up when discussing his family and his hope to marry his girlfriend.

"I have my girlfriend, who is hoping to marry," he said. "I have a very, very good family that I love back home in America. And I miss them every day when I'm gone. I miss them and I'm afraid that I might not ever see them again and that I'll never be able to tell them that I love them again and I'll never be able to hug them."

He is also prompted by his interrogators to give a message to the American people.

"To my fellow Americans who have loved ones over here, who know what it's like to miss them, you have the power to make our government bring them home," he said. "Please, please bring us home so that we can be back where we belong and not over here, wasting our time and our lives and our precious life that we could be using back in our own country. Please bring us home. It is America and American people who have that power."

The video is not a continuous recording – it appears to stop and start during the questioning.

It is unclear from the video whether the July 14 date is authentic. The soldier says that he heard that a Chinook helicopter carrying 37 NATO troops had been shot down over Helmand. A helicopter was shot down in southern Afghanistan on July 14, but it was carrying civilians on a reported humanitarian mission for NATO forces. All six Ukrainian passengers died in the crash, and a child on the ground was killed.

On July 2, the U.S. military said an American soldier had disappeared after walking off his base in eastern Afghanistan with three Afghan counterparts and was believed to have been taken prisoner. A U.S. defense official said the soldier was noticed missing during a routine check of the unit on June 30 and was first listed as "duty status whereabouts unknown."

Details of such incidents are routinely held very tightly by the military as it works to retrieve a missing or captured soldier without giving away any information to captors.

But Afghan Police Gen. Nabi Mullakheil said the soldier went missing in eastern Paktika province near the border with Pakistan from an American base. The region is known to be Taliban-infested.

The most important insurgent group operating in that area is known as Haqqani network and is led by warlord Siraj Haqqani, whom the U.S. has accused of masterminding beheadings and suicide bombings including the July 2008 attack on the Indian Embassy in Kabul that killed some 60 people. The Haqqani group also was linked to an assassination attempt on Afghan president Hamid Karzai early last year.

On Saturday, a U.S. military official in Kabul, Col. Greg Julian, said the U.S. was "still doing everything we can to return him safely."

Julian said U.S. troops had distributed two flyers in the area where the soldier disappeared. One of them asked for information on the missing soldier and offered a $25,000 reward for his return. The other said "please return our soldier safely" or "we will hunt you," according to Julian.

Man! It sure is some ignorant folks on HuffPost tonight. If a person cannot say a prayer for this soldier without being attacked or called names, then this is a sorry place to read news. It's not about religion. It's about a common sense of decency. Because YOU don't believe in God should not give you permission to attack those who do. WTF is wrong with you people?

Never mind. Don't answer that. I realize that your religion, Atheism, teaches you to attack believers. I have yet to meet a non-believer that did not outright attack or otherwise be rude to believers who express their beliefs. I realize that's what YOUR religion teaches you, and I accept that and move on.

Have a good night.

I agree with you that this particular story is not the appropriate place to voice such debates, but nevertheless I don't think anyone should pretend that it is remotely rational to believe that blatantly fictional mythology is real.

The intention of such remarks are no doubt completely sincere, so yes people shouldn't be attacking them...on the other hand this situation doesn't alter the fact that believing in a "god" is inherently ludicrous.

It's kind of strange that not only do you refer to atheism as a religion, but you classify people as "believers" and "non-believers". I think I already know which you are. I’m also guessing it’s a protestant denomination.

Atheism is a way of thought, not a way of life. We don't go to atheistic churches, or private atheistic schools. We don't gather together and study founding literature. We don't make members out of children and newborns in baptism/confirmation rituals. We don't have bat/bar mitzvahs. There are no rites, nor tithes, nor titles. It doesn't teach people anything. Considering how much palpable physical damage that has been done by "believers" of all sorts in the past, and how disastrously intertwined religious dogma as been with politics/military for justification of the most atrocious acts for centuries, atheists have A LOT to be defensive about.

That being said there are people on both extremes, and they don't represent the majority. You don't seem extreme, and I see where you're coming from. It isn't polite to bash someone for expressing spiritual support regardless of one's own personal beliefs.

I don't see where anyone was attacked for praying for this soldier. I have nothing against people praying for anyone or anything. I just see it as a waste of time that you could use to actually do something instead. It's just not the way I like to waste my time. I did point out the hypocracy of someone that told someone to use a different conduit for their anti religious views and that they would never say that to someone that uses the same conduit for their religious views.

You talk tough on the internet while you stay home, but you'd probably be crying like a baby if you were in the same situation this actual soldier is in. You hillbillies like to talk like you'd react so differently, but the truth is you've never been in such a situation and you never will be.

I don't know who is telling the truth. He is saying he was caught after lagging behind on a patrol. The military says he walked off the base with three Afghans. Considering he made his statement in captivity, I would give the U.S. military the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sure he is scared, I'm sure that he was captured by some "not very nice" people, and he probably will not live much longer. I am a 57 year old Grandmother, and if I were in his situation, I'd wish that I'd swallowed a GPS, so the United States Air Force would know the exact spot to drop the bomb on all of them. I felt that way when the Americans were being held hostage in Iran many years ago. If you know you don't stand a chance of staying alive, better hope something happens to take out as many as you can.

My prayers for this young man and his family.

I don't think that way. There was a reporter that was captured not too long ago and he got away, as in he escaped. So don't count this young soldier out just yet. All captured soldiers are not killed. Sometimes, they are traded for things, ie, money, prisoner releases, etc.

Dropping that bomb would definitely finish off any fear he has , if thats what you're so worried about,

If I remember right the Iranian captives came home because someone did not drop a bomb.

Sorry, but that has nothing to do with this soldier. We invaded Iraq, but those people who rammed a jetliner into two of our buildings that had over 3,000 people in it came from, and trained in, Afghanistan, which is where this soldier was/is. Our enemy who came HERE to the US is in Afghanistan and that's why we are there.

Please get your facts straight and figure out what the hell is going on in the world before posting.

WRONG. We didn't invade Afghanistan, which is where this soldier is/was. We invaded Iraq, which has nothing to do with this.

The people we are fighting in Afghanistan are the same people who rammed an airplane into our buildings on OUR SOIL, killing over 3,000 people who did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to them. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE POSTING.

The Taliban won't torture this soldier because they know America does not torture. They will follow our example. Oh no, we don't want them to follow our example, because America does torture but they changed the name to "enhanced interrogations". People have been itching for the torture photos? I'm glad the president stopped them, now is not the time for them to be floating around. Bush and Cheney has put this country in a very precarious position. Maybe, the Taliban will show more compassion or humanity than we did. I hope this young soldier will be alright and will be released.

We are there to capture or kill Bin Ladin. If the Afghan or Pakistan people would give him up, we'd have our bags packed. Because if we leave right now, they will come here, and we as a nation cannot stand that again. This country cried daily when they flew those planes into the WTC's, killing 3,000+ innocent Americans.

I want our troops home too, but not until we finish our business there. The Afghans want us there to help rebuild, and that's what we are doing. If anything, we need to fully withdraw from Iraq, because now, their leadership is thumping his chest and we need to let him have it all to themselves since they are acting that way. We have done enough to make up for invading that country but the same does not hold true for Afghanistan. Do you realize that 90% of the worlds' heroin supply comes from Afghanistan?

Echos of Vietnam: finishing our business there. This would be funny if it weren't so darned pathetic. Our business in Vietnam finished the same way this business will finished: a chopper leaving the roof of a besieged embassy building. This kind of meddling never turns out well for us (or anyone else, ask the British, French, Russians, etc.). We had our chance to catch bin Laden but cowardice on the part of our military and civilian leadership scotched that. When bin Laden was holed up in the mountains the US tried to use indigenous Afghan tribesmen to capture him. He bought them out and the rest is history. A reluctance to face US casualties and a profound ignorance of the local customs, language, history and culture defeats us every time. Yet we keep hoping that all these little nations will just do as we tell them. Ha!

Yes, but the more publicity, the sooner we get out.

No, they don't. This shouldn't even be online. Some dumb @$$ journo spilled the beans, because it puts the soldier in danger by making a "big deal" out of it. If he looks unimportant to us, then he may be seen as unimportant, and released.

Does anyone here on this thread have any suggestions on how this soldier might be rescued or released from the Taliban?
Everyone has an opinion on this site..but do you think our military can locate him and do a rescue mission or WHAT do these Taliban want for this soldier and is possible to trade him for one of their captured men?

The military's response would be that we don't negotiate with terrorists.

I doubt anything can be done by somebody else. He has to figure something out for himself. This doesn't sound like people who just want ransom money. This sounds like hard core Taliban.

The nature of indigenous anti-occupation movements is immersion in the local population. It's not like this soldier is being held in a "base" like Bagram only populated by taliban. He is being held in someone's house or storage shed. The people who are holding him look just like everyone else in the area. If you want to understand this you have to think more in terms of a traditional kidnapping than a military seizure. It is the NATO soldiers that don't blend in--not the taliban. US intelligence is not very good in this part of the world. All the US has is SIGINT and Aerial photography. HUMINT is pretty useless and often causes screwups when some local chief has a rival hit with a predator because our intell guys believed his rival was a talib.

Trade a few thousand detainees from Bagram.

After all an American life is worth so much more - apparent by the hundreds of thousands of civilians we have killed in iraq and now starting in Afghanistan
