Gates: Americans Won't Accept "Long Slog" In Afghanistan

After eight years, U.S.-led forces must show progress in Afghanistan by next summer to avoid the public perception that the conflict has become unwinnable, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said in a sharp critique of the war effort.

Hmm - both these useless wars, $150 billion a year. Health care reform over ten years, $1.5 trillion, or $150 billion a year. But the American people, apparently, would rather have the wars than health care for all, because everybody's asking where the money is going to come from, and it's right there in those two ridiculous wars.

Who believes that Afghanistan is a war that can be won or that the Afghan people will embrace our reform efforts? Afghanistan took down the Soviet Union and Great Britian before them. It is arrogant to believe that the U S will fare any better. Americans have a long history of intolerance for long drawn out wars to their credit.

The Vietnam war ran from 1959 to 1975 -- about twice the time we've been in Afghanistan -- so we still have a ways to go.
