Does anyone know if the healthcare reform bill forces pharmaceutical companies to run long-term tests (think about 1-2 years)on their pills before release? This is important to find out unknown side-effects. One of the biggest reasons why insurance is so high is because the drugs we get have nasty/costly long term side-effects(permanent organ damage, nerve damage, etc). Currently, the pharma companies only do tests for a few weeks, maybe months in trial phase. If it works, then they pack and sell it. No long-term research into side-effects at all.

In short, does this bill force them to be responsible? If it did it would be real progess!

Not this one, nor would it belong here, but I seem to recall legislation for the FDA was recently passed. Have you looked there?

I thought maybe they'd throw it in there. The costs are directly related to that cycle. I'll check out the new FDA legislation, but I'm doubtful. The FDA is kinda of a lameduck on issues like this.

More side-effects are the big pharm's revenue expansion strategy. The side effects stimulate the sales of more other drug purported to cure the side-effects and endow you with some other side-effects. There's no need to cure you completely, as that's counter productive to their revenue generation and bad for their stock price.

Buying ham at 2x the cost at the local grocery store? You'd think buying in bulk would save money but not when it's the government spending our dollars. Sure, let's give them more of our money. They've proven to be so responsible with it for the part 75 years.

The question is really not about your health or my health or anybody's health; it's about the ownership of a lucrative turf that has been enabling those involved in adminstering the system become richer and richer. These fat cats don't care if the costs skyrocket. The higher the costs skyrocket, they will become filthily richer on the masses' pain and suffering.

The question now is really whelther the government has the will to stop this nightmare for the well being of the whole country, instead of a few filthy rich ugly fat cats who are operating the current legal public looting.

Obama said it.

In two short years the number of emergency room visits at Children Hospital has increased over 50%.
All of us are paying for these emergency room visits through our higher premiums.

For all those not familiar with DC, Childrens Hospital is located next to the Washington Hospital Center which probably has seen the same increase in emergency visits.

The way the system works now, the people with insurance pay for the people without insurance. That raises our premiums and makes our businesses and industries uncompetitive worldwide.

A new GAO report [PDF] has made some news by reporting that large fractions of both U.S.-controlled and foreign-controlled corporations report no liabilities under the federal corporate income tax. In 2005, 25% of "large" U.S.-controlled corporations and 67% of all U.S.-controlled corporations reported no tax liability; foreign-controlled corporations reported no tax liability at roughly similar rates (slightly higher overall for GAO's study period).

16 years ago, when Bill Clinton came into office, he announced his plan to raise corporate taxes. The Republicans swore that it would hurt business and job creation.

-- By the end of Clinton's term, we saw 22 million jobs created, Dow Jones tripled.

8 years ago, George W Bush cut business taxes, declaring that it would lead to enormous economic growth.

-- By the end of Bush's term, we saw 2 million jobs created, Dow Jones DOWN 2500 points from when he came into office.

Obama, it's too late. Why didn't you show this kind of leadership earlier. The reasons it's gonna die are:

1. Americans don't really want it. Some days ago, some people who didn't have health care said on CNN SOTU with John King that they didn't want it.

2. All the ads I have been seen so far on TV are those distorting health care reform, none to promote health care.

3. The media are funded by these health care industries, so the media are confusing people on this matter and distorting it.

4. Obama did not show any leadership earlier, even as Dem leaders demanded him to do so.

5. Bipartisanship is not a way of getting things done.

A new president is gonna get health care done, not Obama. I supported him, but his handling of all domestic issues are very bad so far. Why can't he run the country like ran his campaign??

The thugs are on this thing about a waterloo if this fails for this administration which shows that they only see health care as some kind of a game. This is sick politics that's affecting real people. Throw the bums out!

Because they can get away with not paying any taxes. And if they can get away with reaming out the entirety of the American populace so that their profits triple or quadruple, they'll do that too. Big Health is corporate America ripping all of us off because they can. We need to put an end to that, right now. President Obama cannot do it alone.

Too many tax breaks from Congress to them. Remember, big business supports Congress to help them win their seats and have tax paid retirement and health care for life even if they only serve one term. How about your retirement and health care. Is it for life after you've only "worked" for four years?

Did Obama rescue small business or big business?. Did Obama help the middle class or the poor?. Or did Obama simply ensure the salaries and bonuses of the wealthiest in America

If Obama were ensuring the salaries and bonuses of the wealthy, there wouldn't be the outrage expressed by the GOP that we are seeing now. It takes a lot of money to run all the fear-based TV ads we've seen.

Insurance Companies and Big Pharma wouldn't spend 1.5 million a day to stop health care reform as they clearly are. That's just the money that we know about, who knows what's happening under the table.

It was Obama that told the car manufacturers to stop with the private jets and prepare a smaller business model because the old model was obsolete. Hello - your market share has shrunk. The car executives had acted as though they didn't know.

The Obama Admin caused the banks receiving the Bush initiated TARP funds to hurry up and repay the government because they did not want the regulations that Obama imposed on them once he took office. He's not the friend of these guys and they know it.

what entrepenurial spirit will flourish under Obama. Businesses that will fit the requirement of causing people not to pay penalties for not having insurance

Bill Moyers spoke with Wendell Potter, a former health insurance executive who left the industry to become an advocate for health care reform. Potter discussed the industry’s history of denying care to members and its extensive efforts to prevent the federal government from creating a “public option” for health insurance to compete with private plans.

Potter said:

“The industry has always tried to make Americans think that government-run systems are the worst thing that could possibly happen to them, that if you even consider that you're heading down the slippery slope towards socialism... I think that people who are strong advocates of our health care system remaining as it is, very much a free market health care system, fail to realize that we're really talking about human beings here, and it doesn't work as well as they would like it to... They are trying to make you worry and fear a government bureaucrat being between you and your doctor. What you have now is a corporate bureaucrat between you and your doctor... The public plan would do a lot to keep [health insurance companies] honest, because it would have to offer a standard benefit plan. It would have to operate more efficiently, as does the Medicare program. It would be structured, I’m certain, on a level playing field so that it wouldn’t [have an] unfair advantage [over] the private insurance companies. Because it could be administered more efficiently, the private insurers would have to operate more efficiently.”

I don't really care if advocates for the current system use rhetoric to fight government run healthcare. All I need to see is the high deficits of the current government run system (Medicare, Medicaid) as well as the fact a large percentage of healthcare providers refuse Medicare patients because the reimbursement doesn't cover their costs. That's enough to convince me the government option will create more problems than it solves.

"Every major social advance is surrounded by controversy and conflict. That's because every time there is change in the status quo there are winners and losers. The controversy over President Obama's health care reform does not center mainly on "differences in approach" or academic disagreements over the way that health care systems should be designed in some ideal world. They center instead on battles over wealth and power - just as they did when the Congress created Social Security or Medicare, or passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964."- Robert Creamer in HuffPo

All the small Republicans like Steele, Kristol and Jindahl are crawling out of the woodwork, sensing a potential weakness among Democrats and using all those scary words like "socialism." Let's send them back where they came from. Call your Congresspeople.
