President Obama's Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Peter Orszag, accused Senate Republicans on Sunday of trying to kill health care reform by dragging out the legislative process.

Appearing on CNN's State of the Union, Orszag labeled the attempts to push back the health care reform timeline as a "typical Washington bureaucratic game of if you don't have a better alternative just delay in hopes that that kills something."

"We want to get this done by August and we think we can," he added. "There are those that are advocating delay just as a desperation move to try and kill this."

Orszag stressed that not everyone calling for delay had sinister motives. The moderate Democrats in the Senate and Blue Dog Democrats in the House, he said, were "actively participating in the debate and that is great." This past week, Sens. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) Mary Landrieu (La.) and Ron Wyden (Ore.), along with Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) and Maine Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins signed a letter asking to slow down the health care reform debate.

Nevertheless, from Orszag's CNN appearance, it seemed clear that the administration thinks pushing back the health care timeline amounts to a death sentence for reform. On Sunday, the OMB Director repeated that the White House's goal was to have legislation passed through both the House and the Senate by the time both chambers break for August recess.

"It's still the goal," he said. "We think we can make that. We are working towards that."

He added that the White House had been in discussion over the weekend with many of the recalcitrant House Democrats and Senate Finance Committee members to hammer out some sort of agreement.

We've ONLY been debating this for 60 years. We need a few more decades to figure this out.

I disagree. Once side has been debating while the other side has been chanting their religion back at them. It's past time for the left to realize that you can't "win" a debate with someone who doesn't have any intention of debating.

Karen Ignagni, President and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).
“Health plans today proposed guaranteed coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions in conjunction with an enforceable individual coverage mandate.”
Okay, everyone has to be covered. I’m not thrilled, but I understand what you’re saying.
“To ensure that all Americans can access coverage, health plans also reiterate their long-standing support for making eligible for Medicaid every uninsured American living in poverty and strengthening the Children’s Health Insurance Program.”
Hold on a minute. If coverage is mandated, where do you get the uninsured Americans and why treat the kids separately?
Am I missing something, or do these guys know what they are talking about?

A local physician and his physician wife, about 15 years ago, created an HMO, Wellcare--when he sold it he got gazillions--they have a wing at the Arts Centre named after them. They were raided by the feds about six months ago, but he sold it a long before that. How did he get so rich so quick? I'll say it out loud, MedicaidFraud.

I cut through all of this.

Whose interests does Congress have?
If it is the American People, then it is Single Payer, Medicare for all.
If it is American Business, then they will keep private health insurance.
That is it.

I understand about "Keeping what you are happy with", so I understand about public option.

But ONLY the strong public option (no trigger).
The only plan I support is one where I can join expanded medicare through my employer, regardless of what the private insurers say. And, given a choice, I WILL do this.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:00 PM on 07/19/2009

I want an expanded version of Medicare, too, but single payer was NEVER put "on the table".

I wonder why that is???

The scam of "insurance" companies has run its course, and proved itself to be the fraud that it is.

Nationalize the whole concept. Single payer administered by the Feds. The time is here.

still in my comment bay, but not to be seen below.

For the Pink commentor:

I think perhaps you left out the history of our nation when educating your children. I have made an extra effort to not only show my children where we are as a nation, but how we got here. And what is needed to keep the majority of citizens, who are and were the backbone that built this nation, safe, whole, and allowed to continue with their pursuit of happiness. I'm sorry your children are confused. Perhaps you are the cause. Sounds like it. Read much?

Apparently, senators and representatives have 'kil_ler' health care coverage (I've been reading your posts about this, for days). Here on this thread one poster asked a few minutes ago: why do we let them get away with it?

Over here in the UK we went after MPs of all 3 main parties for their wasting our money by claiming all kinds and sorts of expenses that were dubious, and it worked. A paper broke the story, then we flooded the offices (gov't offices too) of our MPs with emails and faxes and phone calls and even hand-written letters. The public went m@d. As a result, many MPs had to stand down and there will be reform.

An hp poster said to me on thread that that doesn't work over in America. If that's true, why not? Sure, it's cross-party, this 'kil_ler' health care coverage, so you can't, as with other things that aren't cross-party, thre@ten to vote them out of power and put in the other guys. But if BOTH Dems and Repubs work together, as Labour and Conservs did over here on the MP Expenses Scandal, and all of you thre@ten all of them, it should work.

Yes?

The UK was luckier (or maybe, smarter) than the US to get NHS on the books in 1948, long long, before the Regan / Thatcher years, back when corporations had nothing like the power they have now over elected officials and when global vulture capitalism was only a gleam in bankers’ eyes.
Even the iron lady, Margret Thatcher, who privatized everything she could, was afraid to touch it.
If the UK had the same system as we have here in the USA now you would find it next to impossible to get NHS passed by “New” Labor. Corporate globalization has come to dominate national democracy. The voters who count are in the boardroom now, not the voting booths.
Here in the US we have come too late to the table.

Here in the USA most commenter's are afraid to be identified, so that our government doesn't target them for audits or harassment. Most people that comment on here do nothing else. They don't write or call the WH or the Congress, they just waste people's time on HP, obstructing progress and real politic

They are even afraid of the sun itself, because it leaves shadows, and maybe someone is spying on them.

It wouldn't lower costs at ll, in fact it would have the opposite affect. It also would not ensure that the poor would be able to afford insurance.

Taxarse, read this, PLEASE.

This is right up your alley, dear, since the Canadians pay a small national sales tax that funds their SINGLE PAYER health care system.

Seriously, dude, read it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:35 PM on 07/19/2009

i dont need to read anything, i know how Canada works. yeah you may have healthcare but everything costs more and taxes are higher. you guys have a value added tax for bleeps sake.

plus care in canada is inefficient and if you come down with something major you may be bleep out of luck waiting for months on end. you guys cant even keep a stable supply of medical equipment.

why do you think so many Canadians cross the border and pay out of pocket when something really bad happens?
