President Obama's Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Peter Orszag, accused Senate Republicans on Sunday of trying to kill health care reform by dragging out the legislative process.

Appearing on CNN's State of the Union, Orszag labeled the attempts to push back the health care reform timeline as a "typical Washington bureaucratic game of if you don't have a better alternative just delay in hopes that that kills something."

"We want to get this done by August and we think we can," he added. "There are those that are advocating delay just as a desperation move to try and kill this."

Orszag stressed that not everyone calling for delay had sinister motives. The moderate Democrats in the Senate and Blue Dog Democrats in the House, he said, were "actively participating in the debate and that is great." This past week, Sens. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) Mary Landrieu (La.) and Ron Wyden (Ore.), along with Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman (Conn.) and Maine Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins signed a letter asking to slow down the health care reform debate.

Nevertheless, from Orszag's CNN appearance, it seemed clear that the administration thinks pushing back the health care timeline amounts to a death sentence for reform. On Sunday, the OMB Director repeated that the White House's goal was to have legislation passed through both the House and the Senate by the time both chambers break for August recess.

"It's still the goal," he said. "We think we can make that. We are working towards that."

He added that the White House had been in discussion over the weekend with many of the recalcitrant House Democrats and Senate Finance Committee members to hammer out some sort of agreement.

as a right leaning on most issues bipartisan i think itspretty bvious that if the dems pass cap and trade and/or this crazy out of control healthcare bill, the tide will turn pretty quickly and many dems will be voted out come 2010 and 2012.

I would like to see mandatory "catastrophic" stop-loss insurance -- say $5,000 per year maximum family out-of-pocket expense and a $5 million lifetime maximum payout -- for each and every person in the United States and mandatory full coverage for children through the age of 18. The childrens' plan would include dental care. This would be provided by the government and the premiums would be eligible for withholding treatment for those employed W-2.

If that were allied with legislation that says "If you offer optional health insurance within the United States of America you may not exclude anyone from coverage because of pre-existing conditions, and you may not terminate coverage for any reason other than non-payment of premium for some specified period or written and notarized request from the insured." I'd say 90 days would be a reasonable non-payment period, but that's obviously negotiable and a technical thing. There is a place for the "regional co-ops" providing this coverage.

The optional insurance would allow people to buy what is essentially pre-paid doctor visits if they wanted them or their employers provided it and would make options available to people who want "Cadillac" plans with provision for things like chiropractic and acupuncture and substance abuse treatment. There's IS a place for consumer choice and provision of optional coverage for those who want it and can afford it. However, many people don't want that sort of coverage

im not saying nobody evaded taxes but the numbers are very inflated due to them counting companies that didnt make any money.

You gave her no proof! NONE! Again, I can show you were the birth certificate insanity has been debunked - something you buy into I might add. Yet, you can't even provide proof of your claims about something be debunked. Do you understand what the word means? Show us proof of your claim: a link, a book, a reference of any sort!

"fairtaxplease

ever consider the idea that an international company can just hide a LOT of the profits over seas, and book the losses in the US?

Cheney did this while CEO of Halliburton, and Halliburton went from a taxpayer to a tax creditor (it GETS YOUR taxpayer dollars), despite the fact it still makes money overall.

GOPers introduced an amendment whereby members of Congress would drop their lifetime 100% coverage and would take what the legislation produced. They did this so Dems would vote against it.

Kennedy voted for it.

Why not delay? Because some of the over 50 million uninsured and underinsured Americans are getting sick and dying due to lack of healthcare. Every day's delay takes fresh victims.

It was 45 Million a while back. When did it go to 50? 15 million are here illegally and many of the rest are young people who opted out of the company plan. Others left jobs and opted out of COBRA. Give a real number of those who can't get it and then we can start having an honest debate.

We don't need a "debate." We've been doing that for years. Everyone knows the facts - that Americans, many Americans don't have any insurance. All we need to do is fix it. So do it. Remember Ross Perot? When he was running he said, "I don't have to think up a good plan. Someone out there already has. All I have to do is find it!" It's time we found it.

No, that is NOT the rub. The public overwhelmingly wants it, polls indicate. The only people who DON'T want it are those who have yet to realize that their decision-making power, regarding their medical care, was long ago handed over to insurance companies.

And yes, those who simply always want Obama to fail.

Guess I start being just as selfish as a typical conservative and say we don't need a public option... your on your own people... not my problem you need to get more responsible... after my family is taken care of.

problem is... I just can't do that... not to MY fellow Americans... we need a public option that takes care of those who can't take care of themselves.

I was able to do that in 3 months before losing medical because we made too much money working from home... who says public option won't work, that you'll be rationed and your doctor won't be able to see you?

Here ya go.

How universal healthcare lowers costs.

http://www.commonwealthfund.org/Content/Publications/Fund-Reports/2009/Jun/Fork-in-the-Road.aspx

With no universal healthcare costs will rise 6.5%
With only private universal healthcare costs will rise 5.8%
With universal healthcare with public option costs will rise 5.6%
With universal healthcare with public option and Medicare limits costs will rise 5.2%

If you don't think 1.3% is much it's about $2 trillion dollars over 10 years.

Moreover insurance rates will go DOWN 25% with a strong public option.

Typical Democrats, going through life blaming their problems on somebody else. Don't need one Republican vote to get this through, but when it doesn't, it's the Republicans fault.

Most problems tend to be the fault of Republicans.

This part was "it's the Republicans fault." They got that one right, but the rest was pap.

Yet, Lincoln was more than willing to allow slavery to continue to exist if doing so would preserve the union.

"I shall do less whenever I shall believe what I am doing hurts the cause, and I shall do more whenever I shall believe doing more will help the cause. I shall try to correct errors when shown to be errors; and I shall adopt new views so fast as they shall appear to be true views." - Lincoln

I see this sentiment in our current president. But I don't want to sound sentimental.

No one is trying to escape responsibility ... I am all for health reform and lowering the cost for EVERYONE ... however lets take the time to get a GOOD bill and do it right? Ask yourself this; why does a good bill need to be rushed through congress in days? Especially so since for the most part it won't be up and running 'til 2013.
