Campbell Brown: CNN Is The Only Cable News Network "Doing Journalism" (VIDEO)

Brown

In a recent interview for Julie Menin's "Give and Take," CNN's Campbell Brown spoke about the current state and future of TV journalism.

Brown said that her network is the only one on cable "doing journalism."

"Fox has made a choice to go in one direction, MSNBC has made a choice to go in the other direction," she said.

Brown's show, on the other hand, has prided itself on being free of any noticeable ideological bent, and for a time went by the name "No Bias, No Bull."

"It is frustrating that there isn't real competition in journalism," she said. "You are, in all likelihood, going to get a bigger rating when you do opinion rather than straight news because you have a bigger audience. There are a lot of people who want to be in an echo chamber and want their views validated."

Brown's program has struggled in the ratings against three powerhouse 8PM programs: Fox News' "O'Reilly Factor," HLN's "Nancy Grace," and MSNBC's "Countdown."

Brown, who often called the media out for sexism during the 2008 presidential campaign, also touched on the differences in the ways men and women are perceived in the media:

"Are we judged in different ways, and are there different standards oftentimes for women, in television news especially? Yes, absolutely. I think that's often the case... Looks and appearance always for women becomes an issue in a way in a way it never does for men...There's no question that men are allowed to age much more so in television than women are. I mean, we have a shorter shelf life."

What planet is she from. There's not a network out there doing "journalism". It's all infomercials and opinion. True journalism hasn't been seen or heard of in this country for years!!!! Campbell needs to go to rehab if she believes that CNN is the only network doing journalism. I hear Betty Ford Center is great!

"Still doing journalism" . . . Brown must have attended the "Palin School of the English Language".

If you want fair and balanced news, the BBC is the way to go!
01:30 AM on 07/23/2009
Campbell, uhmmm no, CNN is a joke with their fake balance and sensationalistic reporting.

Campbell, dear. Indulge me;
How does one "do" journalism?
And what makes you believe that CNN is the only one partaking in this act?

Journalism is an art.
It's reporting. It's research. It's part commentary and part selflessness.
And with Lou Dobbs going off the end the way he has been lately, you can't seriously me CNN is partaking in this art.

The only one close enough to doing this is Rachel Maddow; not on CNN.
07:32 AM on 07/23/2009
But Raceel Madd. has a warped sense of a news budget. She thinks DADT and gay marriage are the top issues of the day. And I cannot stand her preaching and whining, all predictable. I used to like her--before she got a show to grandstand on.

Does Campbell consider her mindless blather journalism? If so she's the only one.

And who considers Wolf or Anderson serious “anchors”? Neither reports the news—both simply chase trashy political gossip.

Campbell,

You are mistaken. Lou Dobbs, for example is not reporting news. He's reporting birth certificate myths. If you think that stuff is news, please get yourself a dictionary, and sign up for a course in journalism.

What????? If journalism is Wolf Blitzer fact-checking Perry Mason episodes during a Supreme Court justice confirmation hearing, then yes, CNN is the only network doing that.

Campbell if that were true more people would be watching you.......... on CNN.
08:37 PM on 07/22/2009
I'm not quite sure what they are doing at CNN but I'm pretty sure it's not journalism.
Propaganda perhaps? Of course they are not alone as MSNBC is doing whatever it is that CNN is doing.
01:09 AM on 07/23/2009
And what network, pray tell, do you watch?
01:38 AM on 07/24/2009
I switch between networks but if I had to pick one that actually tried to be fair I would pick FOX. I'll grant that they lean far to the Right but they make a point of putting Liberals on the air all day long and allow them to defend their views. You don't see that on CNN or MSNBC. Al Sharpton and Barney Frank spend so much time on O'Reilly's show that they should be on the payroll.
07:40 PM on 07/22/2009
I stopped watching CNN about 4-5 years ago when they started aping Fox (making/allowing unchallenged, insane comments on air in an inane attempt to provide "balance"). When they put Beck on Headline News, I turned them off forever and haven't looked back (what am I missing, Dobbs' xenophobia, Blitzer's inability to make a declarative statement, even when facts demand one?). She's married to Dan Senor (I harbor no ill will toward) who has done a fair amount of punditry in defense of the Bush admin. so her claim to objectivity falls pretty flat.
09:03 PM on 08/06/2009
I agree with these sentiments completely. I just wish there was a descent news program out there. All of them seem to be so biased now. Also CB just isn't that talented.

What's the Rapture Index doing, Campbell?
