NEW YORK — A flock of global entertainment notables and politicos, including France's first lady Carla Bruni, toasted Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday with an all-star concert at Radio City Music Hall.

The tribute, held Saturday night, celebrated the anti-apartheid icon's birthday with a diverse collection of musical collaborations that ranged from pop to disco to gospel.

Bruni made her American stage debut at the show paired with Eurythmics founder Dave Stewart as her husband, President Nicolas Sarkozy, sat cheering in the audience. She paid homage to Mandela's social activism by covering Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind," calling it a song by another famous activist.

For her first song, a slow French ballad, she told the crowd: "This one's not good for dancing. But it's good for dreaming."

But from an early performance by disco queen Gloria Gaynor to the star-studded finale led by Stevie Wonder, the crowd was on their feet for most of the night.

PHOTOS:

The 22-year old pop singer Jesse McCartney, one of the evening's youngest performers, performed his hit, "How Do You Sleep?" Italian artist Zucchero, who has appeared at every Mandela foundation concert, chose to sing the soulful "You Are So Beautiful."

VIDEO (look for President Sarkozy in the audience):

While the South African freedom fighter could not make the festivities, his presence was felt inside and outside of the theater. African artists such as Suzanna Owiyo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Sipho Mabuse, and the Soweto Gospel Choir played backup for the night and were part of the one of the strongest performances.

Queen Latifah performed a booming rendition of "There's a Light" that ended with thunderous applause. She originally recorded the song for the 2007 movie, "Hairspray."

Among the eclectic collaborators were the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, who joined Josh Groban for his "You Raise Me Up." After the song, Groban told the crowd that performing with Franklin was "the thrill of a lifetime."

Alicia Keys and African artist Angelique Kidjo performed the spiritual "Afrika." Rapper Lil' Kim's duet with Cyndi Lauper offered a stripped-down rendition of Lauper's "Time After Time."

Before the show, the rapper spoke of how Mandela inspired her, saying: "He was very instrumental in my experience in prison." Lil' Kim spent a year in prison on conspiracy and perjury charges.

Mandela appeared last year for a concert in London's Hyde Park to celebrate his 90th birthday but since then, Mandela's doctors advised that he no longer travel internationally. The concert Saturday, therefore, culminates the first ever "Mandela Day" as a means of honoring his inspiration by observing the day annually.

Nice rendition. I changed the words "Blowin in the wind to"," In The hearts of men". I cry every time I hear that song. Cause were on the dark side of the road.
I might say you treated me unkind but that don't matter cause I don't mind. You just kinda waisted my precious time " Don't think twice it's alright."
I think this donna loves America. I felt the Love . People need Love. Thats all we need.

Va Bene, Carla.Bellissimo, Magnifica. Stupendo. Ancora. Grazie Mile Bene Multo. Prego. Good Job.

Hey! All you naysayers out there. Can you pick up a guitar, play it, sing in two or three languages before an international audience and look good doing it?

Ms. Bruni has a very "continental" style of singing, that is , not overproduced and sort of simple. Johnny Depp's girlfriend is much the same type of singer..It's quite different from American music. I thought she sounded kind of flat at times. She is very attractive, again, in a sort of low key, deceptively "simple" way. I just don't get what she sees in Sarkozy, .....power is alluring, I guess.

Blahdity, blahdity, blah. Is she Barbara Streisand? -- no. But she has a husky sexy quality that is pleasing to the ears.

Plus...a very good looking, mature woman.

Forest Whitaker looks FABULOUS.

As for Carla's "singing," I am reminded of a scumbagulous critic back in the sixties who equated Bob Dylan's voice with that of "a dog with its foot caught in a barb-wire fence."

I was going to say she sound like a cat scratching on tin; the picture is not faltering one of her. Why are they in the U.S.? Singing for Mandela - I think not; they are still trying to pull and suck off of President and FL Obama's popularity. I'll be calling them stockers soon if they don't leave town and get back to France.
For those Carla fans enjoy the article and the rest of us who could care less about her and the awful music.....well!

Carla Sarkowzy wants fame, she wants to be a famous model, a famous singer, and famous in the political world. I have this feeling that there would have been no marriage had this man not had power and fame.

I guess when you are married to the French president, you can do pretty much whatever you want.

Even when you shouldn't.

It isn't a cage.

It is a kennel with the door open and he went in and out of his own free will. He was 8 wks old here, and had been in our home for 2 days. He slept in a crate where he was born so that was where he was initially the most comfortable.

Now he sleeps with our kids, or anywhere he wants.

Believe me, this dog owns the entire house.
