Donatella Versace knows that fashion is about moving forward, but the Versace house can't help but keep one eye on the eighties as it evolves into the 21st century. In a recent interview, Donatella told New York Magazine's fashion director Harriet Mays Powell that the what Versace is doing today is exactly what the late Gianni did thirty years ago:
"Gianni was an icon in the eighties because Gianni was daring. And the eighties was about daring, it was about excess, it was about in-your-face fashion."
With Versace's new collection full of metallics, fabric combinations, graphics, zippers and form-fitting garments, Donatella has kept the name's identity but modernized it for today's audience.
