WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Republican party is accusing President Barack Obama of conducting "risky experimentation" with his health care proposals, saying they will hurt the economy and force millions to drop their current coverage.

Michael Steele, in remarks prepared for delivery at the National Press Club, also said the president, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and key congressional committee chairmen are part of a "cabal" that wants to implement government-run health care.

"Obama-Pelosi want to start building a colossal, closed health care system where Washington decides. Republicans want and support an open health care system where patients and doctors make the decisions," Steele said in excerpts of his speech made available in advance.

Obama has repeatedly said he does not favor a government-run health care system. Legislation taking shape in the House envisions private insurance companies selling coverage in competition with the government.

Even so, numerous Republicans in Congress continue to level the accusation at Obama and congressional Democrats, and Steele did so in sharply critical terms.

"Many Democrats outside of the Obama-Pelosi-Reid-Waxman cabal know that voters won't stand for these kinds of foolish prescriptions for our health care. We do too. That's why Republicans will stop at nothing to remind voters about the risky experimentation going on in Washington," the party chairman said in advance excerpts. Harry Reid, D-Nev., is Senate majority leader; Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., is chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Republican officials said they were supplementing Steele's speech with a round of television advertising designed to oppose government-run health care. No details were immediately available on the areas where the commercials would run or their cost.

In his speech, Steele broadened his attack beyond health care to question Obama's truthfulness.

The president "tells us he doesn't want to spend more than we have, he doesn't want the deficit to go up, he doesn't want to live off borrowed money. But he also told us he didn't want to run an auto company. President Obama justifies this spending by saying the devil made him do it. He doesn't want to spend trillions we can't afford, but he says he just can't help it," Steele said in the prepared excerpts.

The Republican chairman is making his speech at a time when Obama is struggling to advance his trademark health care proposal after a period of evident progress. Two of three House committees have approved their portions of the bill, while one of two Senate panels have acted.

But conservative Democrats have raised objections to some elements of the legislation, and efforts in the Senate to reach a bipartisan agreement have yet to bear fruit. Obama's attempt to impose an early August deadline on both the House and Senate for passage of legislation is in jeopardy.

Health care has been discussed since Teddy Roosevelt brought it up. Interestingly, only by Democrats since then.

The only risky thing here is that the greedy people in health care will leave disgruntled. That will open up new positions for altruistic young doctors who really believe in helping people.

Oh, no, the President wants to keep us all healthy! How dare he? Doesn't he know that Presidents are supposed to destroy small, unarmed nations and steal their wealth for his friends? Where does he get off trying to make American lives better? He should give the job back to the GOP, because they obviously know what to do with all that power! (Does Steele actually believe this nonsense?)

"Obama-Pelosi want to start building a colossal, closed health care system where Washington decides. Republicans want and support an open health care system where patients and doctors make the decisions,"

The Dems are just as bizarre in that they do not vocally attack the notion that the current system is in fact not open and is being paraylzed by the influence of the insurance company which is interfering between the patient and the doctors. This neatly shows us that both parties are beholden to the powerful lobby put in place by the insurance firms, there are some exceptions but it does explain how the premise of which the GOP deposits (that government will run healthcare under Obama) seems to be the starting point, while most of Congress lets ride the notion that no one is currently running healthcare.

One can only figure that the Dems' hestitancy to broach the reality of the broken system is more related to their own personal strings (of which they need to fill their campaign coffers) than an active understanding that we are not operating in a pristine environment where suddenly a control mechanism is about to be instituted.

Neither the crooks in the Democrat or republican party serve the true interest of the public's interest; they are truly two sides of the same corrupt coin.

You are spot on, but this is the way of the world. Potlitics are poltics. However, we get a better shot with the Dems than we do with the Repubs. So get over your criticism of the system. Instead, what we need to do is fight for a single-payer system. At the very least, we must make sure that we get a strong public health insurance option.

Out them. Publish the stats on how much each has received from the lobbyists for insurance co's and pharma. Shame them into doing the right thing.

I am ashamed of these dems. Our local progressive talk station named the six, including Ron Wyden of oregon, and how many millions they had received from the healthcare industry for their campaigns. They all got millions. And Lieberman I think got the most. I don't count him as a democrat anyway.

Don't let Washington decide. Let insurance companies decide, because your health is clearly their #1 priority.

I wonder who is paying Michael Steele's health insurance premiums? The RNC? I bet he has a really great plan too. The only way to get these spoiled and out of touch politicians to understand is to take away their paid health insurance. Let them get and pay for their own individual plans. And those who have pre-existing conditions will be denied or pay tremendous premiums. Also, take away taxpayer paid health insurance and full pay pensions from Congress and their families. Then maybe they will understand what WE are going through and do what needs to be done and do it right.

As of now, they have no incentive because they are not affected, except that they are rewarded to block it by insurance company and pharma company lobbyists.

Bamd together with organizations like Move On and sign petitions and support their campaign efforts trargeting the Blue Dogs. Support organizations that are getting out the message that supports health care refrorm that is either single0-payer or at the very least offer a strong public insurance option.

Write to the white house, your representatives, the house and senate leadership and te blue dogs and tell them what you want. Write the members of the main stream media and tell them how you feel. Write Op-Ed pieces for your local papers.

It is time to take action. We are not victims, We can accomplish what we will to accomplish.

Yes We Can!

It's just not a good week without at least 3-4 stupid quotes from Steele.

This could almost be the new "Bushisms". Maybe someone should make a book of "GOPisms".
