nytimes.com:

If the Obama administration has a strategy for reviving manufacturing, Douglas Bartlett would like to know what it is.

Buffeted by foreign competition, Mr. Bartlett recently closed his printed circuit board factory, founded 57 years ago by his father, and laid off the remaining 87 workers. Last week, he auctioned off the machinery, and soon he will raze the factory itself in Cary, Ill.

Reviving this country's manufacturing is the key to long term growth. China has grown so rapidly because it has taken away virtually all US manufacturing and associated jobs.

We are seeing each recession seems to take longer than the one before and is deeper because more jobs are outsourced during recessions. One manufacturing job is tied to growing 4 others. There is nothing that is taking the place of lost manufacturing jobs and to date, there has been no help for that sector which has been begging for help. If Obama can assist, a small improvement would mean a lot of jobs

"The Commerce Department is adding $100 million, more than double the current outlay, to a program that helps American manufacturers operate more effectively."

That piddly amount of money wouldn't buy a major league baseball stadium.

What took Obama so long to figure this out?

Wait... factories pollute...

Never mind.

Better to keep giving away money to banks and Wall Street.

SOCIAL you are everthing that is wrong with many ignorant hateful Republicans. Building factoris working off of solar is nothing new and brings in jobs on a large scale.

Changing or designing new factories that cost less to run and manufacture is a upcoming business boom dummie. But of course you are a republican who believes there is no such thins as pollution.

Poor dummies have no clue i am happy that some Republicans although very few do.

By the way did you marry your cousin?

Would someone do a survey of how many companies closed in America because of the unions?

I know for a fact the amount of jobs is massive not because they could not compete but because of the strong arm greedy union leaders wante to play poker and twist arms untill big business ran and small manufactures.

No one will a brain will manufacture a item in the east coast or west coast but he south is a favorite for today and the future. If the unions continue on the same path as years path they will be out out of business because ALL of America will revolt.

You need to develop an appreciation for what the word "fact" means, because it's obvious you don't have a clue. In a sense you're lucky. American labor is almost dead, and has been for decades. That means your union-free experiment can take place sometime in the future. Unfortunately, many people will have to suffer through your laboratory study of how market systems, unchallenged by other economic models, treat masses of people.

Struggling huh? Has he taken away the subsidies for off-shoring? Or changed the tax base for companies that off-shore? Or applied anything in the legislative process that will help? One thing that he could do, that he won't do, is insist that maintenance on aircraft be kept on-shore, except when it has to be performed off-shore. He could limit the number of immigrants. He could subsidize aircraft manufacturing. He could re-negotiate NAFTA, which he won't, even though he convinced supporters that he would before the election.

If Americans, especially neocons, were truly patiots, we would refuse to buy goods not made in thsi country when we have a choice. Iknow that's not often these days, but when it does occur, we should encourage it. If people stopped buying cheap foreign goods, American companies would stop selling them very quickly.
Made In America is meaningelss without Bought and Sold In America.

They stopped being patriots when they discovered they could sell off America piece by piece to foreign investors, and kick the working man in the behind while they do it.

WHY THROW GOOD MONEY AFTER BAD WITH THE WALL STREET BANS WHO HIDE THEIR BANKRUPTCY STATUS?

The 0ffice of Comptroller of the Currency, 0CC, issues a quarterly Report that has the following info:

1 JPM0RGAN $81TRILLION in Toxic Derivatives
2 BofA $78TRILLION
3 G0LDMAN $48TRILLION
4 M0RGAN $39TRILLION
5 C1T1GROUP $32TRILLION

http://www.occ.gov/ftp/release/2009-72a.pdf It is on page 23

The holes in their balance sheets is huge with government on the hook to insure their deposits.

The worst part is $23.7 Trillion is not even a nail clipping compared to the Massive Toxic Derivatives piled up in $30+ Trillion blocks as reported by the OCC!

So in the meantime Wall Street just pretends they don't exist in public and continue to sit on them, holding on to OUR CASH making all kinds of deals. Pathetic!

The FED has manipulated elections and using its debt creating powers has done more to take America from the #1 Creditor Nation to #1 Debtor Nation than any other entity on the planet!

We find that $23.7 Trillion, mostly from the FED has been dumped into saving the corrupt and obsolete Mammoth Wall Street Banks. In addition Bernake has setup fake companies so he can shuffle money without it being tracked easily, many with a Maiden Lane title, the street on which G0LDMAN is located.

It is time to AUDIT THE FED SYSTEM and if found to be culpable in its pursuits then it should be ENDED!

Too many people want to have theuir cake and eat it too. You want to buy stuff cheap, well it has to be produced by people with low wages.

USA has to switch to producing high-end value-added products. For that it takes qualified personnel. So you have to fix the education system too. USA is next to last in school results at the OECD!

Forty years of lazyness and neglect and living on credit cannot be fixed overnight.

China protects their Industry by the use of 600 souls million willing to work for a day's rations. And 500 millionn are on call to cover sick-outs.

Tariff their products to appreciate the mean wage differential which exists between The U.S. and China.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:16 PM on 07/21/2009

You wish. Workers in China are extremely demanding and qualified personal will walk out on you as soon as they get a better offer from a competitor. Retention in many tech industries is between six months and a year.

And a tariff is a tax by another name. The Chinese won't care how much you have to pay to Uncle Sam, they will still make stuff cheaper and better than Americans.

I am not sure what tech industry you are talking about, as your comments are completely false. Most people I have seen in China in the tech industry have worked in only one or two companies since they have left university. Maybe the companies you know just suck.

Their work is as good a quality as anyone else's, but they are still getting paid significantly less than their US counterparts. In addition, the significant government subsidies help in jobs that are more equipment cost intensive.

No, but there are a few things that he could do in order to send a signal. So far, its been status quo all the way, even to the people he's picked to fill job slots.

As long as American owned companies continue to out source American jobs, so that they can continue to line their pockets at OUR expense, WE the people are at their mercy.
Fine them for every job they take away from us, then maybe they will start caring more, if not then we will just NOT buy their products. This is the reason America's auto industry is in such a state. The dumb ***** that work there buy foreign made cars, what did they think would happen?
